*Romanian black metel band NEGURA BUNGET have changed there lineup as Sol Faur and Hypogrammos have left the band to be replaced by new members: 09.05.2009: Negura Bunget official statement
This has to be one of the most difficult messages to be written. We are sorry to announce that Hupogrammos and Sol Faur have ended their journey along Negura Bunget. Our paths are now apart. We wish them all the best on their new endeavors (their new project will be announced at a later time).
Meanwhile, a new Negura Bunget line-up is assembled, which will continue the path started almost 15 years ago. Rest assure, we are keen to prove there is more to be said by this band, and we will work to fulfill our spiritual endeavor relentlessly.
All Negura Bunget scheduled plans (concerts, festivals, contracts with Aural Music/Code666 Records and Prophecy Productions/Lupus Lounge) will be completed in the new formula. New website and myspace page are developed and will soon be online.

Negru, of behalf of Negura Bunget.
5/13/09: Hypogrammos and Sol Faur have made an official statement regarding NEGURA BUNGET's breakup as it reads as follows: Hupogrammos (guitars, vocals, bass, keyboards, archaic instruments) and Sol Faur (guitar), who recently announced their departures from NEGURA BUNGET, the Romanian band that incorporates elements of black metal, progressive metal, folk metal and dark ambient, have released the following statement:

"Our aim is to shed light on the recent developments in relation to NEGURA BUNGET. We also want to prevent further abuse of the name NEGURA BUNGET and our past activities. Our decision should be well understood and fans and media have a right to be correctly informed of the current development. We owe this to the public and NEGURA BUNGET itself. There is no intention to turn this into a personal issue between us and our former drummer Negru. We do not wish to create a public scandal, but a line has been crossed and it is time now to stand up and fight for what we believe in.

"With the last 'official' NEGURA BUNGET statement, things went too far. The selfish and greedy acts of a single person are doing too much harm. We cannot accept how our issues were presented to the world. In truth our gesture to step aside from the band was generated by the selfish behavior of our drummer Negru and by his lack of ability to connect, to work in a team as well as by his lack of honesty.

"We initially intended to remain silent on the reasons of our split. We all agreed to end our joined work and to release a simple and unspectacular statement to the press in order to prevent our personal animosity to become part of the story. It was agreed by all that none of the members would use the name 'NEGURA BUNGET' ever again in the future since the band as an entity was comprised by all three of its members. Negru's act of making a public statement that is completely different from what has been agreed upon proves once more a total lack of respect for the other members of our and his own band. It proves his honor to be questionable as his acts are serving only his personal interest.

"Our own statement, which we had sent to Negru for approval and adjustment, looked like this:

"'After fifteen years of experience in the metal scene, NEGURA BUNGET decided to end its activity. Negru will continue with his own project called DIN BRAD, while Hupogrammos and Sol Faur will continue the direction of the band under a different name that will be announced at a later date. The band would like to thank everybody, who supported and believed in NEGURA BUNGET and invites you to follow our further musical activities.'

"Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to see his final statement before it was sent. We were unable to change or to prevent it from becoming public in that form. Being in charge of all the logistic part of our work (i.e. all our contacts, our MySpace page, our official website, our newsletter and activities of Negura Music), Negru was entitled to send our statement to the media and to the public. However, he didn't consult us before posting a statement that did not care about our opinion, even though his statement makes believe this was a mutual decision.

"We think that it would have been much more natural, peaceful and wise decision, if he would have simply continued his musical activities under a new name or under the name 'DIN BRAD.' In this regard, we would like to express our deepest regret and disappointment that two of our guest musicians, whom we collaborated with during the last years, accepted to join his sham. Nevertheless, we consider it to be very inappropriate for them to continue performing songs that were composed by those members leaving the band.

"It is truly sad to see that the band is now becoming a personal business for our former drummer. He never was and he will never be NEGURA BUNGET by himself. If this is the spiritual endeavor which he is talking about, then this is a serious insult to the very name of NEGURA BUNGET and an unforgivable contradiction to the cultural and spiritual concepts that NEGURA BUNGET was standing for during all these years. It means an injury to us, the past members that dedicated 15 years of their lives to support and sustain an elevated path. It means an injury to anybody, who believed in what we were doing and maybe most of all it is a wounding of Spirit and Transcendence, the path that NEGURA BUNGET was honored to dedicate its very existence to.

"We, Sol Faur and Hupogrammos, who have composed nearly all music and written the lyrics of and for NEGURA BUNGET herewith, declare that this band is dead. Any continuation of it just means a sham and a fake in our eyes."

Negru's "new" version of NEGURA BUNGET consists of the following musicians:

Corb - Guitar/Vocals
Spin - Guitar
Gadinet - Bass
Inia Dinia - Keyboards
Ageru Pamanatului - Vocals/Pipes/Percussions/Xylophone

*Chicago Illinois black metal band NACHTMYSTIUM have announced the release of "Doomsday Derelicts" (MCD) on Battle Kommand: FROM NACHTMYSTIUM: Battle Kommand Records has announce the label's first in-house CD release in over a year: the brand new MCD from Chicago's purveyors of psychedelic blackened metal NACHTMYSTIUM, entitled "Doomsday Derelicts". The release was arranged in cooperation with Century Media Records, NACHTMYSTIUM's home label in the United States.

"Doomsday Derelicts" features four brand new tracks that in part pay homage to the band's metal heroes: BEHERIT, AUTOPSY, MERCYFUL FATE, DARKTHRONE and PROFANATICA, to name but a few. Thus, the outcome is much more aggressive than the preceding full-length. "Doomsday Derelicts" was recorded at the world-renowned Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago (owned and operated by Steve Albini of BIG BLACK / SHELLAC / RAPEMAN fame) and was engineered and co-produced by Sanford Parker, the man behind the controls on NACHTMYSTIUM's highly-acclaimed 2008 full-length "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1".

"Doomsday Derelicts" track listing:

02. Life of Fire

FROM BWBK.COM: Norwegian black metallers GORGOROTH are back after a two-year absence from the live arena. The band will once again perform its Satanic rituals on stage on August 29th, where Gorgoroth will be headlining the last night of the 10th anniversary Hole In The Sky Metal Festival in Bergen, Norway, with US doom legends PENTAGRAM as co-headliners.

This exclusive Gorgoroth concert will be held in tribute of the band's former drummer Erik Grim Brødreskift (1966-1999). The setlist will include classic songs from the Pentagram album - not played live for 12 years - and perhaps also brand new material from the upcoming album, Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt.

The recording of Gorgoroth's new studio album Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt is progressing according to schedule, with a tentative October 2009 release date. The album will be released by Regain Records.

A new official Gorgoroth MySpace profile is now under construction, and can be found at this location.
* Legendary U.S. black ambient project XASTHUR have announced a MAY 26th release for XASTHUR brainchild's (MALEFICS's) latest offering "All Reflections Drained" on HYDRAHEAD records. FROM XASTHUR AND HYDRAHEAD RECORDS:
Consider it the sonic equivalent of a beautiful case of seasonal affective disorder during a locust invasion ("it's raining murder!"). To create that patented quicksand cocoon, he uses sundry effects and pedals, cello, guitar (classical acoustic and electric) and bass, keyboards, an army of drum machines, and some mics to capture his brilliant howl. - Pitchfork Media

When I close my eyes and listen, I think of a heartbroken demon sitting beside these ashes in hell and really missing his girlfriend. It's like romantic death metal. The aggressiveness of his guitar riffs can be quite brutal. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's really clever. His flow is so authentically black metal; he knows how to make it orchestral and gothic. I don't know all the rules to metal, but he seems to kind of be above them. - Ryan Adams for the NY Times

All Reflections Drained is another step in Xasthur's slowly evolving descent into psychic isolation and misanthropic darkness. All of the usual symphonic contempt is present; bordering on blurred beauty and solitary misery. Recorded in 2007/08, All Reflections Drained marks yet another crucial transition for Xasthur, with the inclusion of guest vocalist M.H., but to say it is the next logical step would be an uneducated statement.

Malefic's musical progression is as reclusive and unsettling as the man himself, and that's a good thing.
All Reflections Drained marks the first Xasthur release with guest vocalist and ambient afficionado M.H. The CD version includes a second disc of bonus material, tracklist to be released shortly but includes alternate versions, unreleased song and several covers. Though the extra songs should not be confused as supplement to the album proper, they do provide a rare glimpse into the process. The 2xCD is housed in DVD style digipack, with cover art provided by Tim Lehi and photography by Faith Coloccia.

All Reflections Drained Tracklist
1. Dirge Forsaken (5:42)
2. Maze of Oppression (5:16)
3. Achieve Emptiness Part II (4:59)
4. Masquerade of Incisions (15:53)
5. Damage Your Soul (4:53)
6. Inner Sanctum Surveillance (7:03)
7. Obfuscated in Oblivion (5:26)
8. All Reflections Drained (7:58)

Malefic's tortured roar, stacked against the head-hanging guitar melodies here, crescendos to an absurd extreme. Muffled shrieks of the asphyxiated at Pompeii. The hacking deathrattle of a peat-bog mummy. Puzzling, barely audible narration, like an obscene phone call from hell's fifth circle. - Dusted

An oppressive haze of mournful guitars, trudging drum-machine rhythms and super distorted vocals. - Time Out NY

Combining traditional black metal elements with forward thinking progression, Malefic has firmly cemented his place at the forefront of experimental, dark music. - Mouth For War
* Wisconsin based black metal band ENTRANCEPERIUM are currently streaming their new song "Mastery Of The Black Arts" on their official MySpace page.

*Film Director Tony Stone's latest feature "SEVERED WAYS:DISCOVERING AMERICA" (March 13,2009 USA) features the music of BURZUM, MORBID ANGEL, JUDAS PRIEST, DIMMU BORGIR and others as black metal and Norse culture are the backdrops of this feature film: MORE ON "SEVERED WAYS" FROM IFC:
"Severed Ways," Magnet Releasing, 2009

Director Tony Stone's first feature "Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America" is, on its surface, a story about two Vikings marauding their way through the forests of the New World 485 years before Columbus did. But more than that, "Severed Ways" bears the spirit of black metal, crafted into an audacious movie between the hammer of an HD camera and the anvil of Stone's wild musings.

For the uninitiated, black metal is an angry, dark and tortured subgenre of heavy metal known mainly for the controversy it's inspired. Church burnings, murder, Satanism, Nazism -- these are the shadows it casts from its origins in Norway. These horrors aren't just hyperbole on the part of detractors, but they don't illuminate the ideological movement from which the musical genre has sprung either. At its heart, black metal is a reaction to Judeo-Christian society from a people whose cultural roots reach deep into an earthy, mythic past. The music, like the film, is a raw exploration of Norse mythology and a rejection of modern Western culture.

Geographically, Scandinavia and Norway in particular were isolated from Christian influence longer than the rest of Europe. Christendom took its continental hold when Constantine made it the state religion of Rome in the 4th century, but the Norse, not part of the Roman Empire, were kept in the dark (or spared from it, depending on your vantage point). For centuries longer, they retained their distinct brand of "paganism," and it still shows today.

Black metal is "made by people whose ancestors were Vikings, angry that their culture's been watered down," Stone said when I had the chance to raise the issue with him over the phone. "What's depicted 1000 years ago in the film is still happening today in Norway," he added, in reference to a conflict that erupts between the Norse duo and Christian monks they stumble upon between gorging on wild salmon and defecating on camera. Anti-Christian sentiment in Norway is very real. Those churches, which stood where there were once shrines to Odin, didn't burn themselves.

Burzum is probably the most notorious artist in the genre. Widely featured in "Severed Ways," he was actually convicted of arson in connection with several church burnings, along with the murder of another Norwegian musician. Of course, that's the extreme end of the spectrum, and not all black metal is violent, nor are a majority of its players. The heavier stuff on the soundtrack of "Severed Ways" may perturb the suspension of disbelief for some, but it does link the Vikings and their modern descendants to "the raw power of nature, its primitive screams," as Stone puts it. For all their dissonant brutality, the Vikings are in rhythm with nature, not dissimilar from Native Americans whose realm they intrude upon.

There's a calm and ambient strain of the genre, too, which is employed liberally in the film, along with Brian Eno and instrumental Krautrock band Popol Vuh, who scored several Werner Herzog films, a similarity that shouldn't go unnoticed. Most of the soundtrack is in this vein and serves to enhance what Stone refers to as "the daunting isolation" of the characters. Without much dialogue, the music also helps develop them, as if they aren't colorful enough hacking their way through the trees, butchering animals and being raped (one of the Vikings, played by Stone himself, gets drugged and molested by a hot native woman).

The Dark Ages describes the tumultuous period after the fall of the Roman Empire, named for its lack of progress and an absence of surviving written work coinciding with social chaos during which Christianity continued to spread. Though it is out of fashion as an academic term, it is useful here to illustrate the historical background of the film, which imagines the twilight hours of the Vikings' culture, before it was broken by a new Christian age, before their "severed ways." The Norse discovery of America did occur several centuries before Columbus, a fact indisputably supported by archeology, but not widely taught in our institutions. Part of the film was shot on location at Leifsbudir in Newfoundland. Renamed L'Anse aux Meadows by the French, it is a small Norse settlement excavated in the 1960s and proof of the title's premise.

Black metal is a battle cry, mostly of Northern Europeans, who seek the return to a pre-Christian ideology. It's also a "modern backlash against American corporate consumerism... of greedy self interest," Stone opines. Though perverse at its edges, it's easy to nod along with these days. It might make you wonder where we'd be if the pagan Norse, the first Europeans to settle America, had endured.
*BLOOD TSUNAMI featuring Bard Faust Eithun have dropped a new CD entitled "Grand Feast For Vultures" 4/27/09 EUROPE and MAY 5th USA. FROM BLOOD TSUNAMI AND NOCTURNAL ART PRODUCTIONS: The metal juggernaut known as Blood Tsunami returns with "GRAND FEAST FOR VULTURES", the follow up to the highly acclaimed 2007 NAP/Candlelight debut, "Thrash Metal". The new album consists of seven songs, which are both faster, darker and heavier than before, but still maintaining the epic, brutal and yet melodic edge.

Blood Tsunami has now really captured what they are all about; relentless thrash metal. With monstrous riffs, red hot leads and rapid drums topped with vicious shrieks and thunderous growls, this ferocious titan of metal will attack with snapping jaws and razor sharp claws. Pulling influences from a deep well of 80's thrash, death and NWOBHM, Blood Tsunami has created their own wicked mixture of noise that brings the listener down an already familiar path, but also taking you to places unknown. Once again recorded in Lion Heart Studios, Oslo, the soundscape is dark and brutal, dynamic and rough. Engineered by Øyvind Voldmo Larsen and produced by the band, "GRAND FEAST FOR VULTURES" is not to be missed upon its release: 27th of April in Europe, 5th of May in the US.

Blood Tsunami is:
Bård "Faust" Eithun - Drums
Kristoffer "Dor" Sørensen - Lead Guitar
Peter "Bosse" Boström - Bass and Backing Growl Vocals
Peter "Pete" Michael Kolstad Vegem - Lead Guitar and Lead Vocals

6. Þjóbaugvittr
7. Þjazagaldr
8. Þá Kómu Niflstormum
9. Þrúðkyn
10. Þríandi
11. Þyteitr

“Njørðr asked Þjazi, the wrathful rime-giant, on the behalf of all the gods for amends; peace between them. But Þjazi answered: ‘No amends – no peace!’ Next, darkness and mist hung over the horizon behind Þjazi and his brothers; and out of the darkness came the ferocious dog-headed giant-tribe of Beli, Þjazi’s allies. The gods now understood that war and darkness were upon them.”

Arckanum returns with the Soundtrack to Wintry Death of the Worlds, an invocation of the wrath from the world of ice. Shamaatae evokes snow-storms out of the bottomless depths of the underworld called Niflhel. They will come as furious rime-giants and sweep their icy scythes to reap all. This album is homage to the Old Norse giant called Þjazi. It is a reflection and an allegorization of Þjazi’s wrathful and god-adversary evocation, resulting in long and annihilating winters destined to wipe out all life. It is the beginning of Ragna Røk.

The noise and harmony of this album are resounding the acosmic rime-breath of Chaos; motivated to counteract the cosmos with destruction.

“When I have destroyed the worlds, the next one shall be free!” – Þjazi

Recorded in February 2009. Produced by Shamaatae. Mastering at Stage One Studio.
Set Teitan partakes on Þórhati, Þann Svartís, and Þrúðkyn.

Þjazagaldr is written and performed by Shamaatae; engineered and mixed by Joakim/Craft.
Cover artwork by Chadwick St. John for Shamaatae.
Artwork, photography, and layout by Shamaatae.

Album released by Debemur Morti Productions.

I wrote this album as a dedication to the wintry and icy powers of the underworld; to rise and sweep the world like a death-bringing scythe. This is my attempt to materialize the essence and power of the wrathful giant Þjazi, as I have understood his purpose. And his rime-breath speaks of the power of the eleven poisonous underworld rivers springing from Hvergelmir – and his mysterious galdr invoked is þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ.
