MARYLAND DEATH FEST: THIS WEEKEND:May 27-29, 2011 at SONAR in Baltimore Maryland

Ahh, MEMORIAL DAY THREE DAY WEEKEND, barbeques, honoring those who served our country and yes, METAL: The 2011 MARYLAND DEATH FEST set to take place May 27-29, 2011 at SONAR in Baltimore Maryland kicks off this weekend.
FROM BLABBERMOUTH.NET: LOCK UP PULLS OUT OF MDF 2011:
Extreme metal supergroup LOCK UP has been forced to cancel its appearance at the Maryland Deathfest IX, set to take place May 26-29 in Baltimore.

Commented the band: "We regret to announce that LOCK UP will not be performing at this year's Maryland Deathfest. We are days away from the festival and our visas have yet to show up. Everything has been handled the right way but apparently things are taking longer these days due to a larger amounts of red tape and bureaucracy. We hope to make things up shortly when our visas actually arrive with some North American tour dates!"

LOCK UP will release its new album, "Necropolis Transparent", on July 1 in Europe and July 12 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded in November-December 2010 at HVR Studios in Ipswich, United Kingdom and was mixed in January.

"Necropolis Transparent" will feature guest appearances by HYPOCRISY/PAIN mainman (and one-time LOCK UP vocalist) Peter TÃĪgtgren along with Jeff Walker (CARCASS, BRUJERIA).

According to a press release, "the songwriting and production on ['Necropolis Transparent'] surpasses everything the band has done so far. The speed, riffing and intensity make this record more than just a grindcore album and see LOCK UP come into their own true identity."

Maryland Deathfest is for lovers. And crust punks and heshers and metalheads. And mild-mannered Metro riders. Despite the extreme name (and music), Deathfest is for almost everybody.

"That is true. It's bringing together anyone who's interested in any subgenre," said Ryan Taylor, who's co-founder of the fest with Evan Harting. "I think that's a huge reason for its success and another reason why people continue to come back — that sense of community and unity."

Now in its ninth year, Deathfest has grown into a local Memorial Day weekend tradition for fans of heavy music. More than 60 bands will thrash, bash and trash their guitars for about 4,000 people, some of whom travel from Europe because of Deathfest's top-notch booking. Taylor and Harting always manage to snag bands that rarely appear in this region or that have been broken up for years only to return because of Deathfest's insistence.

Taylor cited three bookings for Deathfest 2011 that fall into that special category, starting with Thursday headliners and English doom-metal legends Cathedral. "It's also billed as their last-ever U.S. show because they're calling it quits later this year," Taylor adds.

On Friday, it's Neurosis, a wildly experimental U.S. band that's been melding ambient, metal and industrial noise since 1985. "I've read tons of reviews about their live show being really mesmerizing and just overwhelming with the wall of sound they put out there," Taylor says.

On Sunday, it's Swiss thrashers Coroner, which broke up in 1996 and re-formed last year. This will be the band's first U.S. show in 15 years.

Four days of bludgeoning jams is nothing to a pure metalhead. But what if you're curious about all the guttural barking but don't have that much time to devote to Deathfest?

"For someone to dive into the deep end and get a feel for just how varied the bands are over the course of one day, Friday is a great representation of that," Taylor says. "There's black-metal bands, thrash bands, grindcore bands," with Neurosis repping the softer side.

Think of it as an advanced special section of a musical anthropology class. But with more corpse paint and beer.

Scariest Bands: Ghost — of eerie face paint and pope outfits — and Marduk, a satanically brutal black-metal band. Both hail from Sweden, land of metal and bikini teams.

Most Ungodly Band Names: Finland's Impaled Nazarene and Ohio's Nunslaughter are least likely to have a sit-down with St. Peter.

Crossover Appeal: Back in the day, punk and metal didn't get along. But the times, they are a-changing. Metal-friendly punkers to catch include Southern California-based trio Nails and Baltimore's Pulling Teeth. North Carolina's Corrosion of Conformity hasn't been punk for years, but it was a hardcore band in the '80s, so we'll grandfather it in as peacemakers.
