ITP V.011 RITUAL REVIEW: 8/27/2011 Kingston, NY VREID, KAMPFAR and NECRONOMICON

ITP V.011 RITUAL (SHOW) REVIEW: VREID, KAMPFAR and NECRONOMICON @ 8/27/2011 KINGSTON, NY THE BASEMENT:
If the inconvenience of Hurricane Irene was the unofficial Apocalypse for some, what better way to celebrate then check out some raging black metal as the rains came pouring down from Valhalla.
The VREID, KAMPFAR, NECRONOMICON show was cancelled in NYC due to hurricane Irene as many fans were re directed to Kingston, NY as I'm sure the tour package was disappointed.
PERFORMANCE RATING: **** 1/2 Canadian blackened/death metal trio NECRONOMICON kicked off the show after other support bands and promptly kicked ass. Tonight was the very first time I had pleasure of a NECRONOMICON ritual as I've never seen a three piece play tighter. NECRONOMICON's set was varied as the band played tunes from each of their four releases ("The Return of The Witch, The Sacred Medicines," The Pharaoh of The Gods" and "The Silver Key") and whipped the crowd into a frenzy of windmilling and mosh. NECRONOMICON had just made a new fan, and they were tight and BRROOTAL.
PERFORMANCE RATING: ****
Norwegian viking metal warriors KAMPFAR (KAMPFAR=ancient Norse battle cry meaning Odin) took the stage to positive crowd response as vocalist Dolk performed with energy and seemed pretty animated, good frontman. I was surprised on how intense, and menacing KAMPFAR are live, with many Norse folk elements KAMPFAR stuck to the bands heaviest material, performing many songs off the bands latest release MARE, varying the set with fan favorites from previous releases, enticing the crowd into chants and moshing. KAMPFAR vocalist DOLK seems like a good guy, and great front man, just watching DOLK rile the crowd into a frenzy backed by one of tightest viking/black metal bands was just awesome.
PERFORMANCE RATING: *** 1/2
Norwegian black and rollers VREID took the stage and majority of the crowd left. VREID opened their set with "Alarm" from MILORG as they performed a varied set from the bands latest release "V" through "I Krig" and "Pitchblack Brigade". Weird because the sparse crowd that did show had already left and those whom stayed seemed bored during VREID's set as vocalist Sture seemed puzzled at the fans filtering out. Too bad, I enjoyed VREID playing material from "Milorg" my personal fave release from the band and bassist Hvall seemed to really be hell bent on riling the crowd up, standing on the monitor singing along to his bands lyrics.

Al hails to NECRONOMICON whom stole the show and laid waste to everything, I'm so glad I was turned on to a band I had never seen before, well worth braving the rain, and KAMPFAR also were intense..Hurricane Irene may have adversely effected draw at this show ( 8/27/2011 Kingston, NY VREID, KAMPFAR and NECRONOMICON) as many roads in the Hudson Valley region were closed in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. It's was always good to see the troo metal heads, as loyal as we are, black clad, windmilling long hair and hailing black and death metal heroes.
As I walked home, the rains began to pour and Hurricane Irene's presence was felt, and fuck her for her damage, as hell as spoken: VREID, KAMPFAR and NECRONOMICON rocked us like a hurricane.
