ABC NO RIO (NYC, New York): NEW BUILDING SOON

Long running New York City punk, hardcore, underground music and alternative art gallery space ABC NO RIO (Rivington Str, NYC, New York) is getting a facelift and a new building as the building will be solor powered and freshly painted.
FROM INHABITAT NYC, NY: ABC No Rio’s façade is currently emblazoned with painted murals, and an iron art piece that also serves as security. http://www.castrucciarchitect.com/abc-no-rio/" Castrucci’s for the façade strips away the grittiness, and injects some nature into the neighborhood. Located on a semi-drab block of Rivington Street, populated by restaurants and cafes, the new façade will feature lush greenery. Instead of an expensive living wall system, the plants will pour over the mesh façade from a series of built-in planters, creating pockets of plants, all watered by hand. New roof gardens will grow ivy and edible plants that will spill out over the front of the building.

The whole building will be built to Passive House standards. The roof will be painted white, with a garden extending the entire length. The front of the roof will support large photovoltaic panels that will provide 15 percent of the building’s power during peak-use and 50 percent during off-peak time. Additional roof decks will be built and planted on the back of the building. The new building will also double ABC No Rio’s gallery and performance space, as well as add a food pantry to support Food Not Bombs.

The new ABC No Rio will greater reflect its activist roots, as well as making it 75 percent more efficient than the building code requires, and 90 percent more energy efficient than most Lower East Side buildings. Castrucci, a neighborhood resident and long time supporter of ABC No Rio, will begin construction in spring of next year.

FROM ABC NO RIO: Will you help us complete this picture?

Hard as it may be to believe, we’ve raised $4 million of the $5 million we need to build No Rio’s new home!!!

But we still need another cool million…

We’re moving forward, working closely with New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Department of Design and Construction to build a fantastic new building. DDC will manage construction — they’re already reviewing our architectural and engineering documents, a process that is far more rigorous than we could ever have imagined. Our construction documents should be complete before the year is out.

We could begin construction next summer, but we still need another cool million…

The new ABC No Rio will be spectacular. We’ll have twice as much space for exhibitions, music, performances and other public events. We’re creating spaces especially designed for our projects and programs. The building will be properly sound-proofed and wheelchair accessible.

Our new building will meet the rigorous Passive House energy efficiency standard through a high-performance building envelope with super-insulated walls and a cutting-edge heat-recovery ventilation system. We’ll be significantly more efficient than the state energy code requires. With a green roof, efficient lighting fixtures and controls, triple-paned, low “e-glazed” windows, and low-flow plumbing fixtures the new building will meet the criteria for LEED Silver.

Sustainable design is not just for mind numbing offices and luxury condos. Small grassroots spaces can be the most sustainable.

But… we still need another cool million to make that happen!

Your support is crucial to ensuring we move forward towards a bigger, better and brighter future. We trust that you will join us, and that we can count on your contribution to ABC No Rio as the year comes to a close.
