In 2012, I went to Auschwitz & Birkenau. I spent all day walking alone in the rain through that terrible place. The first photo is mine- the remnants of “The Little Red House”, a former peasant’s cottage converted into a gas chamber. 400 people would be killed at a time in that house. I wrote the lyrics to the song “Nightmare Seeker (The Little Red House)” about my day spent in those terrible killing grounds- it is about not looking away from atrocities.

Auschwitz stays with you.

During the Holocaust, it is estimated that 1.5 million children died, the majority of them Jewish. Beyond execution, a major cause of death was starvation & lack of sanitation.

I don’t do this often, but the 2nd photo is not mine- it is by the Palestinian photographer Ahmed al-Arini. An emaciated, malnourished child with a plastic bag as a diaper— starvation & lack of sanitation. What does this remind me most of? Photos I have seen of starved Holocaust victims.

Do not look away. This is happening right now.

A week after the atrocities committed on Oct. 7 2023, I posted a photo & part of the caption read: “Whatever your beliefs- any sane, pragmatic person should be calling for an immediate ceasefire, release of Israeli hostages, & humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza. This will not stop otherwise. It’s been a week of CONSTANT DEATH- haven’t enough children died?”

That was after ONE WEEK. We now approach two years of constant death.

I have friends with family in Israel, & friends with family in Gaza. I cannot pretend to understand the complexity of their emotions, but I don’t believe that any of these people want ANY child to starve— what is happening to the children of Gaza is also an atrocity.

Atrocities upon atrocities- when will this end?

I don’t have answers- it feels impossible. Posting on social media is not action, so I’ve donated money to the impartial humanitarian aid group @wckitchen - but what good does $ do if food is not allowed in?

All I can do is plead- in the name of God, of human decency, of MERCY— let humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Starving children to death, no matter where they are from, is morally indefensible.

Hate will destroy us all.
