The family of a "heroic" teenage musician who drowned trying to save his friend off the coast of Brazil have said they will struggle to pay the "huge" cost of bringing his body home.

Timothy Kennelly, 18, died last Thursday after diving into rough waters off the Brazilian coast of Atalia in a bid to save his drowning bandmate, Leon Villalba, 21. The pair, from London, were on a six-week tour with their heavy metal band, After Death.

Mr Kennelly's parents flew out to Brazil over the weekend, but have since discovered that they will have to pay the full cost of repatriating their son's body themselves because none of the band members had insurance.

He added: “Unfortunately none of them had any insurance so the families are going to have to spend a huge amount of money repatriating the bodies.

“Timothy's parents are going to find it hard to come up with the money. Rosemary is a retired teacher and Diarmuid worked as a fish monger but his business closed three years ago.”

Mr McLaughlin, 53, a consultant in the oil industry, said the remaining members of the band had returned to London and had visited both grieving families.

“They told us that they saw Timothy and Leon clinging together in the sea and then they were just gone. Timothy is not a good swimmer but he still did everything he could to try and help his friend. We are all so proud of him. He is a hero,” he said.

Witnesses said Mr Kennelly — a gap year student who was planning to study physics at the University of York — rushed into the water to rescue Mr Villalba after he began struggling in rough waves.

Lifeguards pulled Mr Villalba out of the water after being alerted by a fellow bather, but he was dead by the time they reached the shore. Mr Kennelly's body was found the next day, washed up on a beach 15 miles away.

The band was only a week into their tour as a support act for the heavy metal band Master when the tragedy occurred.

Mr Kennelly, from Ealing, had joined the group six months ago after leaving Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in Shepherd's Bush.

Barry O'Connor, the band's drummer, described Mr Kennelly as a "great guy all round".

"Tim straight away made a massive impression ... he was full of information, loved a laugh and was on cloud nine," the 22-year-old said.

Mr Villalba, from Islington, was a former pupil of St Aloysius RC College.
