NEW YORK: FULLY REPEAL LAW 50 -A and PASS POLICE STAT ACT:
Thank
you to all of the many organizers of tonight's rally & march for
Black Lives, and the thousands of community members who came
out. It was a tremendous coalition and community effort with so many
people from so many places stepping up and organizing to make our
collective demands for police accountability and decarceration at the
local, state and national level.
A critical next step (one of many): We must call on state legislators to end police secrecy! State leaders must fully repeal 50-a, the New York State law that allows police departments to hide misconduct and discipline away from the public, and pass the Police STAT Act to increase transparency and accountability.

Pride Month recognizes the
contributions of Black and Brown trans women in resisting police
brutality-- the bedrock on which our movement was founded. We remember
it as a breakthrough moment when we refused to accept humiliation and
fear as the price of living fully, freely, and authentically. Our
communities, however, are still targeted for being ourselves. The
continuous failure to hold police accountable for misconduct, abuse, and
violence must end now.
This week the New York legislature will
reconvene to discuss passing a police accountability package. HRC needs
your help in urging lawmakers to include and pass a critical piece of
legislation (A654/S2253) in that package. A654/S2253
(Paulin/Hoylman) would repeal New York State’s Loitering for the Purpose
of Prostitution law, also known as the #WalkingWhileTrans ban, which
has resulted in widespread police profiling, unjust arrests, police
harassment, and police violence—particularly in LGBTQ communities,
immigrants communities, and Black and Latinx communities.
Now, more than ever, we need the New York State Legislature to repeal
laws that enable profiling, police harassment, sexual violence, and
other forms of police violence against Black and Brown communities, and pass measures that hold law enforcement officers accountable. Take
action NOW. Email Senate and Assembly leadership and urge them to
include and pass A654/S2253 in the police accountability package.
