FROM WARBRINGER:

“The constant threat of a shot to the chest, but defending yourself is resisting arrest. City streets that I called my home are starting to look like a combat zone!”

I came up with this song idea (Remain Violent) in the aftermath of the 2014 shooting by police of Michael Brown in Fergeson, Missouri. It is really saddening to see that so little has changed and that such a similar event could take place again, with the unnecessary and tragic death of George Floyd. The police and state response has been sad to witness as well- using brutality against protests against brutality is wildly tone-deaf, and the White House’s response of urging “domination” is ridiculous, to say the least.

I am happy to see a massive public and international outrage against this kind of state violence. Perhaps this time, we will see serious institutional change in America. But keep in mind that this is far from the first time such an event has taken place, and such events take place without nationwide protests more often than they do. George Floyd is one of many. A murder of an innocent man is no laughing matter in any case, but is exceptionally severe when the culprit wears the badge of state authority.

While our song is a metal song and is meant to be loud and angry and blaring, I would encourage any and all protestors to remain NON-violent, despite their rightful anger. Just as with Fergeson, any instance of “indiscipline” among the protestors is used to discredit their cause and distort the narrative. To see this is very sad, as one heard that rhetoric last time, and there clearly wasn’t an effective change between then and now. I think it is very clear that the fundamental cause of the protests is just. Time and history will be on their side, I believe.

My parting thought is- remain angry about this after it’s left the daily news cycle and it is no longer the hot topic of the day. Sustained effort is required to bring about actual change in the future.
