We've lost a giant in the world of Rock and Roll. No way to know how many countless guitar players Eddie inspired to sit in their rooms and jam for hours learning Eruption or bands that formed after hearing his band Van Halen. Peace and love to everyone out there hurting today.

 FROM JASON BITTNER (OVERKILL):
This is undoubtedly the worst year ever.......first we lose the man who changed drums, now we lose the man who changed guitar.......always wanted to meet the man, but at least I saw him play a few times!!!! Welcome to a raging party in R n R heaven!!!

FROM IAN CHRSTIE (METAL WRITER):

We die bold. Eddie Van Halen reinvented the way guitarists play, he changed the guitars themselves, and he even made the amps better. He's a titanic figure in electric guitar, matched only by Les Paul and Hendrix, and Van Halen through 1984 is the best American hard rock band by miles. By 1978 they had already rendered most LA bands of the 1980s redundant.
Sunday night I spent two hours talking about VH with the Dave & Dave Unchained podcast. We were only supposed to go for an hour, but with the scale of Van Halen's escapades, adventures, and swashbuckling heroics it's hard not to go overboard. I have to say the year or so I spent writing my book was one of the funnest years of my life, just being in that mindset.
RIP EVH, there will never be another.

FROM GUN:

Eddie Van Halen dead at 65. 🥺😡
2020 can fuck the fuck right the fuck off.

I remember the first time I head Eddie Van Halen, my brothers were playing ERUPTION In their room, and I walked slowly down our tiny little house to the room they shared (each on their chosen level of their bunkbed) and sat on the floor. I'd never heard anything like it. I asked them if it was from a movie and they laughed and said no, that's EDDIE. I didn't know what that meant and asked, that's a human? And they laughed harder and threw pillows at me 😆 Wow. Just an incredible loss. An absolute icon, legend and trailblazer, and one of the best goddamn guitarists to ever exist. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones and fans. There will never another EVH.
Rest in paradise, sir. Thanks for the music, the passion, for pollinating our minds and souls. If there's an afterlife, they got one helluva band. Shred In power EVH.

FROM IBANEZ GUITARS:

All of us at Ibanez Guitars are truly saddened to learn about the passing of guitar icon Eddie Van Halen. Although Eddie was never officially one of our artists, it is impossible to quantify the incredible effect that Eddie’s career as a songwriter, artist, and guitarist had on the entire guitar community. We were all in awe of his greatness from the very start. Without his monumental contributions to many aspects of the electric guitar, whether it was his trailblazing style of playing, his dedication to his craft, or the advancement of guitar technology he helped drive, it is safe to say that this industry wouldn’t be same as it is today if it weren’t for him. The guitar community has lost one of the all-time greats and a legend in every sense of the word. Rest in Peace Eddie Van Halen.

FROM  TOM WARRIOR (CELTIC FROST/TRYPTYKON):

It has been many years – decades, in fact – since Eddie Van Halen's music affected me in a profound manner. But those untamed first four Van Halen albums, released during the halcyon days of my late 1970s/early 1980s skateboarding, enthusiastically purchased by the teenage me, and thus the contemporary soundtrack to my antics, were (and are) unlike any other metal ever released. Eddie's passing reminds me anew what an incredible musical revolution his band and his playing signified for anything that came afterwards.

R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen. Truly the end of an era.

FROM NINTH CIRCLE:

Thank you, Edward.

FROM INCANTATION:

An inspiration to many. Rest in power, EVH.

FROM HINAYANA:

We lost another legend today. What an impact this man had on heavy music. From his insane guitar playing right down to his constant tinkering with gear and influence over the guitar sounds thousands of extreme metal musicians utilize with their 5150 amps and high gain guitar sounds - he will be missed. RIP Eddie.

FROM EVH GEAR:

One of the greatest guitarists of all time, Eddie Van Halen was also a valued business partner, innovative collaborator and treasured friend to so many of us at EVH Gear and FMIC. We are heartbroken by this devastating loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We will miss his warm hugs, double-cheek kisses, his humor, the videos or photos he would proudly share of his son, Wolfie, and his tendency to call it like it was. Eddie, thank you for the otherworldly musical legacy you have left behind. We will cherish it, and our memories of you forever. RIP.

FROM FENDER (GUITARS):

Few guitarists have made as much an impact on pop culture, musicians’ tastes and instrument design as Eddie Van Halen. His enthusiasm for new sounds paired with his knack for engineering resulted in a unique and iconic guitar and amp tone, whose sounds and designs would forever change the perspective of listeners, players and builders around the world. We are deeply saddened by his passing today, Eddie was an important member of the Fender family for many years, and we are keeping his family and friends in our thoughts.

FROM CLUTCH:

EVH RIP

FROM GUITAR CENTER:

Today we lost a legend. Eddie Van Halen's playing forever changed what we thought was possible on the guitar. On Nov. 13, 1985, we were thrilled to honor Eddie in our very first RockWalk induction at our Hollywood store alongside the likes of Les Paul, Jim Marshall, Bob Moog, Stevie Wonder, and others. Learning his licks has become a rite of passage for so many guitarists, and we'll never get tired of hearing all of you play "Eruption" every Saturday morning in our stores. Thanks for everything, Eddie.

FROM JIM DUNLOP:

Eddie Van Halen was one of the greatest guitar players of all time. His unique insights and unparalleled creativity inspired us toward new and exciting innovations.
Eddie reshaped his art form in real time, and countless hard rock and metal guitar players bear his influence, even as they tread their own musical paths.
We have so much gratitude that we got to work with and create with a musical genius such as Eddie Van Halen. He was a big part of Dunlop and will be greatly missed.

FROM PEARL JAM:

Can’t believe Eddie Van Halen died.
I saw them on the VH2, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down tours. Also when they came back with Dave. I started playing guitar about a year after Van Halen I came out. It sounded like Eddie was from another planet and the energy from Van Halen was undeniable. Amazing songs too. Romeo Delight, On Fire, Unchained, Mean Street, DOA, Light up The Sky, Ain’t Talkin' bout Love, Eruption, Atomic Punk, Everybody wants some, on and on I can go...
Tim Dijulio and I would skip school and wait in line all day for Van Halen back in the day. Eddie was like Mozart for guitar. Changed everything and he played with Soul.
RIP EVH. - Mike McCready

FROM FLOYD ROSE:

The world lost the ultimate guitar hero today. The Floyd Rose wouldn't be what it is without his influence. I'll always remember the incredible times we had during the Kramer days, and for that I am eternally grateful. Thanks for the great music and great memories. Rest in peace, old friend.

Re: Eddie Van Halen
My condolences go out to all of Eddie's family .
I never did meet Eddie. It was something I always wanted to happen.
The song, Jump, was something ASIA tried to copy in a way with our song, Go, from the album ASTRA.
They were a big influence as a band on ASIA.
All the guitar players I ever spoke to about Eddie always held Eddie up as the God of Rock guitar.
My good friend Tony Iommi was very close to Eddie and said he was a great person to be around.
The guitar world will miss you, Eddie. We all will.

 THE ALAN HOLDSWORTH ARCHIVES:

N MEMORY OF EDWARD VAN HALEN (1955-2020)
“A wonderful generous soul to say nothing of his amazing talent!”
We have just received the sad news that Edward Van Halen has passed away. Most Holdsworth fans are well aware that Edward was a huge fan of Allan, and had an instrumental role in getting him signed to Warner Brothers. Despite the fact that the deal with Warner turned out frustrating for Allan, he never had anything but appreciation for Edward (as Allan consistently called him). Allan also consistently referred to Edward as a great guy. In the liner notes for “Tales From The Vault”, Allan wrote: “A wonderful generous soul to say nothing of his amazing talent!” “Edward has an exceptional natural talent, he’s innovative and he does incredible things with that guitar of his”, Allan told Chitarre in 1987. Allan also referred to Edward’s generosity on numerous occasions, such as when he told Mike Pachelli in 1991: “He's a really great guy, he's got a big heart and really helped us out.”
The Allan Holdsworth Archives is a fan page, and we believe we have every single Allan fan with us in offering our most heartfelt condolences to Eddie’s family.

 FROM PATTY SMYTH:

When Ed came out on the road with us in 1984 with his wife Valerie, we had the best time of our lives on stage and off. They actually got on our bus and did 3 shows with us. He was a god and he liked our songs!!! They were so kind, so happy and fun to be with . Thank you Hollywood Palladium for recording that evening. Here’s Goodbye to you with the one and only Edward Van Halen. Think you have to follow link.

 FROM STRYPER:

All of us in the Stryper family are devastated by the passing of the great Eddie Van Halen! There will never be another, ever. RIP, EVH!

FROM JASON BECKER:

I am so extremely sad about losing my friend and great inspiration, Eddie Van Halen. I love him and his contribution to the world. He was the greatest guitar player ever, and at the same time, so kind and compassionate. He supported me and my family in every way possible. When he first came to my house, he cried with so much empathy. He felt bad about giving me a guitar because I couldn't play it. Once he got more comfortable, he played the CD of the title track of 'A Little Ain't Enough', so he could point out to me his favorite lick that I played. It was the arpeggios near the end. I told him that his tune, 'Feel Your Love Tonight,' inspired my playing on that song.
He was responsible for getting 'Perspective' on the Warner Bros. label.
When the ice bucket challenge happened, he called me and sent money.
He was my biggest inspiration and such a beautiful person. I love you, man. My family and I send love to his family.
--Jason

FROM YUSEF CAT STEVENS:

Sad to hear Eddie Van Halen has passed away. A guitar innovator with a fierce spirit of musical and technical exploration. Prayers and thoughts with his family and friends.

FROM WAMPLER PEDALS:

We lost a genius. Eddie Van Halen lost his battle with cancer today and he was an absolute cast iron legend of the instrument and the sound we all love. The First Van Halen album is possibly one of the greatest debut albums of all time, he taught millions of people how to tap a fretboard, and he was simply put, a musical genius.
Eddie Van Halen was an inspiration for all of us, he is part of why we all picked up the guitar in the first place, and searching for his sound has driven Wampler to creative highs with pedals like the Pinnacle. Without Van Halen, there probably would not have been a Wampler Pedals. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Fly on brother Eddie.

'Terribly sad to hear about the passing of Eddie Van Halen. There’s so much you can say about him and his importance of rock guitar. What a tremendous talent he was! A pioneer, innovator and just downright amazing. I loved his solos as much as everyone else. With that type of virtuoso brilliance a lot of his other qualities often seemed overlooked. His rhythm playing is one. He was such a outstanding rhythm player. ”Mean Street” off of ”Fair Warning” Lp is a good example, as are ”Panama” and pretty much everything else. His abilities as a songwriter is another thing. He was one of a kind. Truly. I’m still reeling from these tragic news. I can’t believe it. It’ll take some time to digest and understand that he’s not around anymore.' Mikael on behalf of Opeth

FROM WARREN HAYNES:

RIP Eddie Van Halen
There are a handful of people with any musical instrument that we can credit with actually changing the course of the instrument. Obviously Charlie Parker changed the alto saxophone. Coltrane changed the tenor saxophone. Jaco Pastorius changed the electric bass. John Bonham changed the world of rock drumming. I could go on but you get the point. It’s an amazing feat for any artist to have that kind of impact and influence on any instrument…..But let’s talk about the electric guitar. The advent of the electric guitar changed music, arguably, more than the the advent of any other instrument. The endless combinations of sounds and techniques allowed everyone to seek their own voice which opened up a whole new world of musical expression and possibilities. Maybe I’m biased but in my opinion the electric guitar saved modern music. So when we’re talking about a small pantheon of people who changed the electric guitar that’s a major feat. Monumental!
I still remember the first time I heard Van Halen. It was at a party in Asheville, my hometown. The first VH album had just come out and people were raving about the music and about Eddie’s guitar playing in particular. Never ready to add someone new to my list of who I consider to be great guitarists, I was a bit resistant but ready to give it a chance. At first listen, I can admit now, I was quite impressed but still not ready to give in to the hype. It was obvious that what he was doing was exceptional but he was using a lot of distortion so I wasn’t convinced that he was really pulling it off in a technical sense…. until I heard Eruption. Pretty damn precise! That’s when it hit me. It was a new day in Rock ’n’ Roll. It was a new day in electric guitar playing. Then later when I heard Spanish Fly (from VH2) GOD DAMN!!! He can play that shit on acoustic guitar.
Fast forward. No matter what your tastes, especially if you’re of a certain age, maybe VH’s music was not your thing but you had to admit it was the real deal! I personally never looked at EVH as being a major influence on my own playing as my style was fairly developed by the time I discovered his music but I was always a big fan of his virtuosity. Also I should point out that, as is the case with the emergence of any highly innovative, groundbreaking new music or new musician, it would soon follow that the airwaves would become inundated with a gazillion copycats, most of which paled in comparison to the trendsetter. This has happened in virtually every moment in history where someone changed the course of a genre or where someone changed the course of an instrument. It has also happened historically with songwriting. When someone comes along with a fresh innovative approach to writing songs suddenly copycats appear out of the woodwork. That’s the way it was with Van Halen, both with Eddie’s playing and with the music itself. This inundation left a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of avid music fans, myself included, but again Eddie was the catharsis for change- not to be blamed for what followed- and VH was the real deal.
I only got to see Van Halen, the band, perform twice- once in the early 80’s in Asheville and once a few years ago when they reformed the original band. All four members of Gov’t Mule happened to be in LA at the time and we were invited to the Forum to see what they called a “friends and family” dress rehearsal show. Being there watching Van Halen in a 20,000 seat arena with only 700 lucky attendees was quite an experience. Eddie played brilliantly. The whole band sounded great, as they did when I first saw them several decades earlier. It was something I'll always remember.
I never knew Eddie- never had the opportunity to meet him- but as someone who has studied music since I first got the “bug” as a kid I am compelled to say that the loss of Eddie Van Halen today is monumental! The list of those who changed the trajectory of the electric guitar is a short one and many arguments can be made that I am leaving some out (which I don’t doubt) but in that regard Eddie is joined by the likes of Charlie Christian, Les Paul, and Jimi Hendrix and very few others. Eddie changed the electric guitar. Eddie changed Rock ’n’ Roll. Rock ’n’ Roll changed the world. Any questions?- WH

FROM SASS JORDAN:

EVH 5 - WRAP UP
Ok, It’s time to wrap up this little journey into the past. It’s funny, you never think the last time you see someone is actually going to be the last time.
The last time I saw Ed in person, was at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. The old Four Seasons Hotel, I should say. It’s long gone, converted into condos, as all precious landmarks eventually seem to do. We were there with our two kids, visiting Al and Stine, along with all the Van Halen kids, and Ed was on a tear. I don’t think he was doing particularly well, but he was making the best of it. They had just played the Toronto stop on the 2004 tour, and we had taken the kids to see the show - they stood at the sound desk all night, surrounded by hundreds of true Van Halen fans, all flashing the metal horns and jumping and swaying to the music - it was the first loud rock concert the kids had ever been to, and they were completely carried away by the power of it all.
We were back at the hotel for a dinner in Al and Stine’s suite, and the kids were going crazy, burning off some energy, running all over the hallway in full on childlike joy - and Ed was right there with them, chasing them all over the place - and right into the elevator - myself, Derek, Ed, and all the kids, including our then 6 year old daughter, Stella - who came flailing into the elevator with the other kids, all out of breath and sparkling with laughter and joy, when she spotted Ed. She marched right up to him, stared right up at him, and said, while waggling her finger in his face - ‘you play weally good - you were weally good!’. I’ll never forget the look on Ed’s face - complete surprise, and then the most wonderful gentle tenderness as he recognized the innocence that the compliment came from. ‘Why, thank you very much, Miss’ was his reply. It was a surreal moment.
From then on, Al and I stayed in touch fairly frequently for about a year or two. Eventually, though, life started to take us all in different directions, as it always does, and it became more and more difficult to maintain our relationship, especially long distance - and especially when you have young families and intense careers going on. It’s a damn shame, because I really love Al. And now that Ed, his brother, band mate, muse and soul mate is gone, I cannot imagine how he must be feeling. My heart goes out to him and to the rest of Van Halen family, along with the legions of fans that were there through thick and thin, through different singers and lineups, through all the years of silence and rumours...
Ed was an original, a glorious fireball comet that shot across the musical soundscape, blasting a new trajectory that was followed and imitated in an infinite myriad of ways. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know him even a little bit, but his genius touched me and so many others in a way that is difficult to articulate.
Godspeed, Eddie, and may you fly free. We’ll see you on the other side.

EVH INSTALLMENT 3
The first brother I met was Alex. He had always been more ‘behind the scenes’ in my eyes, although in fact, he was behind the drums - and they towered over him ... you could never really see him. So, although he was still an intimidating character to me, it wasn’t too bad, because in person he was not a big man. He was quite slight, actually - wiry, and brimming with a crackling nervous energy. He was edgy, wise-cracking, full of piss and vinegar, and I instantly loved him. There was something about him that seemed familiar to me, like a big brother, and for some reason, he took a big, bright shine to me. We instantly got along like a house on fire, and I rapidly forgot that he was who he was. By the time Ed finally came up to the studio from the house, Al and I were already old pals. I remember Al saying ‘hey, come meet Sass’, and turning around, I saw Ed. A completely surreal moment. There he was, in the flesh, the astonishingly brilliant musical - wizard that me and ALL my friends had admired from afar - in all his glittering, guitar god glory - there he was ... a simple ... man? No lightning bolts? No fire - balls? No thunder? Nope ... just ....a guy. A quiet, haunted looking guy. He shuffled over, shook my hand, lit a smoke, sat down, picked up a guitar and started casually playing some lines.I have no idea what was so earth shattering about that - I’ve seen a million guitar players play a million lines - but THIS was the the mythical Eddie Van Halen. I was more or less speechless. I didn’t know what to say or how to act - I was literally dumbfounded. Al started jabbering away about I don’t even remember what, Ed kept playing, and I slowly came back to earth and realized that this was just a person, a human being. I swear to god it must have taken me about 30 minutes to rediscover my self and behave like a normal person. You have to understand that Ed was a personification of my childhood dreams - dreams of knowing and working with the people who I looked up to as a young musician. This, from the human point of view, however, is both a blessing and a curse. This reaction of mine was precisely the reason Ed couldn’t go anywhere or do anything ‘normal’. I mean, if I couldn’t behave normally around him - and I had been around a lot of ‘famous’ people, not to mention experiencing it myself to some degree - then imagine how much tougher it would it be for someone who wasn’t even in that rarefied world - who only saw how it appeared from the outside?
As the days wore on, the three of us would sit around and discuss music, the music business, people we knew, and the state of their band. They were very angry in those days - they had a lot of fury about the singers they had worked with - but it was a natural phase that anyone goes through after a break up. They seemed to be way more interested in talking about music than actually playing it. I was writing songs for my next record at that time, so they would listen and critique the songs. There was one song in particular that Ed would ask to hear over and over. I don’t know what it was that got him about that song, but he would make me play it over and over.
One night I arrived at the studio late, and Ed buzzed me through the gate, told me to hang tight and that he’d be up in a minute. I don’t remember where Al was - but I do remember just hanging out for about an hour or so, when suddenly, Ed burst through the door in sweats and a raincoat, his hair all wild, looking for all the world like a rockstar Einstein. He was in a super intense mood ... “Sass - play that song of yours - the one about I don’t know who I am - play it!!!” I put the song on, a little disturbed by his disheveled appearance, and he seemed to go into a trance. He just stood there in front of me, eyes closed, swaying to the music ... and all of a sudden, tears started to roll down his cheeks. ‘Sass!! Play it again!!!!’ I was dumbfounded. Slowly, he reached into the pocket of his raincoat, and pulled out ... a burrito??? I swear to god, he pulled out a fucking 7-11 burrito - and, eyes still closed, tears streaming down his face, reached into the other pocket and pulled out a packet of hot sauce. I am not kidding. I didn’t know whether to laugh - or cry with him. I finally ended up doing both. That man had some deep pockets.
I will finish this up tomorrow. Until then - Enjoy! And thank you for all your wonderful comments and stories - I will try and answer some of the questions you have sent next week.

FROM NITA STRAUSS:

The word “innovator” gets thrown around a lot in this industry.
In my humble opinion, there is no one it applies to more than the great Eddie Van Halen.
Thank you for being THE innovator, the ultimate pioneer of these six strings and blazing a trail for so many of us to attempt to follow.
Forever an inspiration 💔 RIP

FROM TREY ANASTASIO (PHISH):

How can I even write about Eddie Van Halen? He towered above all guitar players when I was young, and he still does. The thing that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard him in high school was how joyously melodic he was. He was impossibly melodic. Listen to the solo in “Jump”. It starts at 2:17. I almost fell over the first time I heard that solo, and I still fall over every time I hear it today. It gets even better with age. The elegance in his playing boggles my mind and fills my heart every time I hear it. He was pure flow and joy.
Thank you so much for your gifts Eddie.
Rest In Peace

FROM TOURNIQUET:

A very sad day in music. RIP Eddie Van Halen - One of the greatest talents to ever pick up a guitar. I was fortunate to see him front row center in Austin, TX at the height of Van Halen's popularity when I was attending college there. I remember leaving the show shaking my head in amazement at his playing, his stage presence, his persona... Is there a guitarist out there who doesn't owe him some kind of "thank you"? For me - the song that best represents his unique phenomenal rhythm and lead playing - and my very favorite VH song is "Mean Street". Pardon the expression “Guitar god” - but he was, is, and always will be.

FROM MARSHALL AMPLIFICATION:

Rest in Peace Eddie. A true guitar legend who inspired so many musicians with his creative and unique playing style. ❤️

FROM BRIAN POSEHN (COMEDIAN):

I loved this dude like we were related. When I’m done crying, his guitar playing and destroying will make me smile like it always did. R.I.P Edward Fucking Van Halen

FROM TOM KEIFER (CINDERELLA):

Our son was 6 yrs old the first
time he heard Eddie Van Halen.
He looked at Savannah & me and asked...
“Does he need two picks to play like that?”
There are great guitarists...
& there are innovators that change everything.
Condolences to his family. #RIPEddieVanHalen
💔

FROM MIKE TRAMP (WHITE LION):> In the arms and presence of greatness.
Without Eddie Van Halen, there would not have been a White Lion, end of story. This was a proud moment for Vito and I, when Eddie acknowledge us.

FROM QUEENSRYCHE:

On behalf of team Queensryche we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the Van Halen family for the passing of the incredibly talented, Eddie Van Halen. FROM BRYAN ADAMS long Eddie, it was great to know ya. Once in awhile someone comes along and changes the musical universe, and of the millions of guitarists in the world, EVH was one of those few. Up there with the greatest guitarists of all time, like Hendrix. I wish you’d had more time, who knows what would have come next, but thanks for the good times, the great solos, the songs, and for being my friend. #RIPEddieVanHalen

FROM RICHIE BLACKMORE:

Eddie Van Halen was a brilliant guitarist who started a technique of guitar playing which was emulated by a whole generation of guitarists. He was one of the nicest musicians I ever met in the music business. Very shy and not at all conceited about his ability as a guitar player. Frank Zappa said he reinvented the guitar. I agree. He will be sadly missed but his brilliant legacy will always be remembered. The ultimate guitar hero.

FROM AEROSMITH:Rest in Peace Eddie Van Halen! You will be missed.

FROM ALDO NOVA:

I'm in shock and almost in tears finding out that one of the greatest guitarists on the planet, one who influenced a whole new generation of guitar players with his unique style of playing and reinvented guitar playing with his solo on "Eruption" inventing the tapping technique that almost every guitar player emulated in their guitar playing. His songwriting was the best and he wrote so many hits that you can hardly count them.
Rest in peace Eddie. My condolences go out to his family, both in real life and his musical family.
I'm at a loss for words

FROM ROB THOMAS (MATCHBOX 20):
Every day after school I would rush home and watch the VHS of Van Halen: LIVE WITHOUT A NET. this was AFTER Fair Warning or Diver Down or 1984. When they changed singers and weathered it because it was Eddie that glued it together. Very few people have actually changed the way people play an instrument but he did. Thank you for your style, humor and talent. That was a bright light. #legen

FROM STEVE MORSE:

This was the last show that I played before my son, Kevin, was born. Albert was always amazing, but the couple of shows that Eddie played with us really showed his raw talent and ability to adapt his style to the songs. My heart goes out to his family, and especially his son, as I know that they were very close, like Kev and I. Eddie, you made a huge musical impact worldwide. Sorry you had to go so early.

FROM VENOM:

The world of Rock & Metal is in mourning, as fans of the band Van Halen learn of the passing of guitar legend Eddy Van Halen on 6 October 2020
Van Halen were a massive influence of the members of Venom, and so they would like to offer their condolences to Eddie's family & friends during this sad time. Rock On Edd.

FROM ALISSA WHIE GLUZ (ARCH ENEMY):

In this next installment of the
Patreon
#CreatorChronicle series, I had to step back for a moment to pay my respects to the great #EVH who recently passed away. I know how difficult this is to digest (almost everyone I know is still in shock) so I encourage everyone to crank some #VanHalen this weekend in his honour! I know I will! And I’m going to double my guitar practice! 🎸
(What about an #EVH guitar emoji?!)
Rest in power Mr. Van Halen and thank you for everything you’ve given to the world of music.
💙

FROM JOHN NORM (FOUNDING MEMBER OF EUROPE):

Dear Edward, Thank you so much for all the inspiration you have given me and thousands of other guitar players and musicians around the world.
You were truly one of a kind and such a nice and humble guy. In 1990 when Billy White (my partner in crime in the Don Dokken band) and I got invited to your studio 5150, that was an experience that I will never forget. I got to play your red and white striped Kramer Beretta guitar which was very exciting and then you played parts of the solo in "Eruption" (loud!) which was so cool! You said that "it wasn't that good" because you weren't warmed up yet, but we thought it sounded great! Because you always had that special touch, tone and feel that made you unique and special.
Thank you for all the great music and my thoughts and prayers goes out to your family at this difficult time. RIP, Eddie. 🙏 /John

FROM DWEEZIL ZAPPA:

An electric guitar is made of wood, wires, metal bits, and magnets, all inert and lacking biological response. However, we know that certain DNA matches can unlock the mysteries of these sapient creatures, like Arthur pulling the sword from the stone. For most of us, the guitar is cruel, incapable of ever being played fully in tune, and causes its suitors to shed layers of skin on their fingertips while trying to tame it. It taunts all of us as if to say, “you’re adorable, I like what you’re trying to do.” Many of us humbly quit and curse the very existence of the instrument, lamenting that we do not possess the skill required to make the guitar obey our commands.

Adding insult to injury, every so often a guitarist comes along who does something so unexpected, even the guitar itself has no choice but to surrender. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was such a guitarist and arguably, he inspired more people to play guitar than anyone in history. A perennial rule-breaker with a name mightier than most mythical beasts, he commanded the instrument to perform as a pure extension of his unbridled creativity all while smiling wider than the Grand Canyon. It was as if he space docked himself to the guitar prior to launching into the “ZONE,” where he was able to effortlessly summon otherworldly riffs.

Music was changed forever when Edward Van Halen was introduced to the world and now it is forever changed by his early departure from our world. To this day, there isn’t a more original guitar intro than “Mean Streets.” it’s as perplexing now as it was 39 years ago when it forced all of us to ask ourselves, “How is he doing that?” Which by the way, he had all of us asking the same question since the first VH album, when we all heard "Eruption." Because he was such an innovator, we may never stop asking that question.

For those of us old enough to remember living in an analog world where we listened deep and hard and caught all the nuances on every recording because we didn’t have search engines to offer us ubiquitous visual references yet, take a moment to cherish that feeling of being so completely blown away by Edward Van Halen's contributions to music. We lined up at record stores to pay for as much music as we could afford and camped out in the snow, in long lines with other worshipers to buy tickets for concerts we couldn’t imagine missing. We took binoculars with us hoping to catch a fleeting glimpse of Edward Van Halen demonstrating what in the actual fuck he was doing. We couldn't get enough and couldn't wait to see what he would come up with next. He changed our lives.

Edward Van Halen fueled a desire for music in millions of fans through his guitar playing and his signature sound. The geometric patterns he designed for his instruments became iconic as well. The abstract nature of his guitar artwork bolstered the originality of his music causing players to not only imitate his playing but his actual artwork as well. There aren't many musical artists who can be recognized within seconds the way Edward Van Halen can. We know him from hearing a single note and a single glance at his guitar. He was the architect behind it all.

He often simplified the complexities of his music explaining, “I just want my guitar playing to make people feel something.” He accomplished that beyond his wildest dreams. For all of his incredible skills, he remained humble, even a bit insecure. That made his music even more likable because he remained human, even though we all idolized him as a superhero. His influence can already be measured over 40 years and without question, he will inspire many future generations.

Edward Van Halen himself was lightning in a bottle, and he could transfer that energy to arenas and stadiums like nobody before or since. Van Halen as a band left audiences feeling like they were floating above the ground for weeks after seeing them perform. The band described it as playing for 10,000 of their closest friends and at their apex, there was nothing that could compete with the almighty Van Halen.

Even though he had the physical capability to display his prowess, Edward Van Halen had the maturity, and restraint to know what was right for the song in every sense. He was a brilliant arranger, opening all our minds to the utilization of interstitial structures to lead us back to the massive hooks he composed. When it came to soloing, his opening phrases were the stuff of legend. He was natural, he flowed seamlessly from improvisation to calculated and sophisticated syncopations. Edward’s impeccable inner pulse was his greatest asset and the very thing that made his playing so unique. To even get close to imitating his actual playing would take a lifetime. If you ever did get there, you would be confronted with the realization that Edward would have climbed his own mountain instead.

As athletic as his playing could be it was never flash over substance. He epitomized the fusion of technical precision and musicality. His intense rhythmic bond with his brother Alex fueled their music in a way that can't be accurately described in words but can most definitely be felt emotionally. It was glorious to watch the virtuoso Van Halen brothers doing what they do best and when Wolfgang joined the mix, the DNA trifecta was one of Edward's proudest moments. He loved playing music with them and we should all take a moment to recognize that the Van Halen family loss is deep. If Unchained used to fire you up, it might make you cry your eyes out now.

We are the benefactors of Edward Van Halen's groundbreaking and timeless music, innovations, and design. We are the awestruck bystanders who witnessed a once in lifetime culmination of groove from the soul, harmonic complexity, and wicked tone wrapped up in a childlike grin. Edward Van Halen didn’t play the electric guitar like us, the guitar was filtered through him and his deft guidance. He made it look easy - we know it wasn't. For many, he will always be the king. Long Live The King!
