SCHAMMASCH: "Venues/promoters don't have a shred of right to earn a cut of merch sales, UNLESS they sell the merch at the event FOR the bands. It's called being paid for providing a service. And even in those cases they often ask for way too much. "

Switzerland based avant garde black metal warriors SCHAMMASCH have commented on the controversial practice of venues taking a cut of touring bands merchandise sales.

SCHAMMASCH unleashed "HEARTS OF NO LIGHT",  11/8/2019 via PROSTHETIC RECORDS.

FROM SCHAMMASCH:

This is just another abomination revealing a glimpse of the touring business' dark future. For bands nowadays touring stands or falls with merch sales - it's that simple. Venues/promoters don't have a shred of right to earn a cut of merch sales, UNLESS they sell the merch at the event FOR the bands. It's called being paid for providing a service. And even in those cases they often ask for way too much. A merch sales person usually gets a cut of 10% and that's it. If venues are starting to get away with forcing bands into giving them merch cuts for no valid reason or provided service, there goes the profits the bands make at the end of the day - after paying for designs, paying for printing, paying for shipping, sometimes paying import/export taxes, handling storage, handling transportation.
This cannot stand and the only weapon against such malpractice is calling it out in the open and never giving in.
