Today, the reborn Ævangelistreveal the nearly-18-minute new track
"The Origin and End of All: Pain of the Fallen" at Hells Headbangers'
official YouTube channel. The track hails from the band's forthcoming
rebirth album, Nightmarecatcher, which will be released by Hells
Headbangers during the first quarter of 2020 on CD format.
Now
residing in Finland, Ævangelist has been in existence since 2010 and was
created/authored by Matron Thorn. Joining Thorn on Nightmarecatcher is ex-Anorexia Nervosa vocalist Stéphane Gerbaud. As such, this is to be considered the official lineup of the true Ævangelist.
Ever restless, Nightmarecatcher sees Matron Thorn exploring an
exquisitely lurking dread, patiently simmering his psychedelic death
metal delirium to a hallucinogenic boil, bringing forth a miasmic
meltdown. Daunting and daring to say the very least, Nightmarecatcher is
one epic 53-minute composition comprising three equally epic chapters,
all threaded together with unsettling ease. Also uniquely, the album is
Ævangelist's first proper live studio recording, created entirely in the
recording space of Oranssi Pazuzu and drums recorded in the recording
space of Barathrum & Sielunvihollinen. Not for nothing is the album
graced with malevolent &; mesmerizing artwork courtesy of the
masterful Jef Whitehead.
Form meeting content, then,
Nightmarecatcher is the sound Ævangelist at is most naked. No less dense
and multi-layered than Matron Thorn's vast body of work under this
moniker, the shimmering Nightmarecatcher stretches Ævangelist to a
skeletal breaking point, a gross 'n' garish carcass on which Thorn
dangles flickering afterimages of disconnection. Exposed and rotten yet
no less resilient, this sonic iteration of Ævangelist retains Thorn's
characteristically nightmarish alchemy, but disposes of obfuscation and
obtuseness; after recent muddling events, only a clearly aimed fist of
hazy horror accomplishes the directive. Rising to the challenge,
Gerbaud's truly disturbing vocals ritualistically recite a litany of
horrors both tangible and otherworldly, leading the listener into the
craggiest catacombs of the self.
Atmosphere reigns supreme, as it
always has in Ævangelist, and comprehension of its infinitely writhing
tendrils begins in the title itself. Nightmarecatcher is the grand
rebirth of the true Ævangelist - past, present, future, all ripped
asunder and reinvigorated in search of The Truth.

Swedish prog-metal/rock legends OPETH are readying their awaited return to North America in 2020 for a winter tour with labelmates GRAVEYARD. In the meantime, the band has released a dark and eerie new animated video short for the Swedish language track “Ingen Sanning Är Allas,” from their recently released album, “In Cauda Venenum,” that’s available now via Moderbolaget/ Nuclear Blast. The video for the English version of the track, “Universal Truth,” will be revealed next Monday.
The offbeat and beautifully crafted video short was created by renowned South African born animator/artist Jess Cope (“Frankenweenie,” “Metallica: Here Comes Revenge”) and follows a melancholic and bitter man on the brink of self-destruction and insanity as he delves into a sinister alternate world as reality crumbles around him. Cope previously collaborated with OPETH’sMikael Åkerfeldt on the music video for “Drag Ropes” for his side project STORM CORROSION, with Steven Wilson. Working mainly with traditional animation methods, her shorts have an enticingly tactile look and feel to them and are brought to life with an unprecedented level of skill and attention to detail. Her emotive storytelling draws in audiences in a way that has seen her win multiple awards for her films in recent years.
The video short precedes OPETH’s upcoming 2020 North American tour that includes two nights at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York and performances at the renowned Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and at the famed Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. It’s about that time.
We have two pieces of news to share to
present our first announcement for Fire In The Mountains 2020, and in
doing so it is our honor to reveal a new element of the event that will
take place with this iteration.
The first piece of news, that we
share with great excitement, is that our headlining act will be the
incomparable Nordic Metal Giants Enslaved - making an exclusive North American appearance for this special set.
The second, is that for the first time we will be working alongside one
of our artists in organizing elements of the festival as a whole - and
thus are honored to introduce our first ever Guest Curator - Enslaved’s
own IVAR BJORNSON.
The legacy and impact of Enslaved is
inimitable, and to bring this music that has been so influential here
below the stars, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains is an experience we
are honored to facilitate, and eager to take part in. Ivar had this to
say of the band’s appearance:
"Our Northern hearts rejoice as we
are part of this announcement for Fire in the Mountains 2020! To come to
these beautiful parts of good ol' Vinland and headline an outdoor
festival is nothing short of a dream come through. We will present a
very special show and cannot wait to share this weekend with the other
artists, audience and the hard working folks behind the festival! To the
mountains!!"
We are very inspired to be working directly
alongside Mr. Bjornson in creating an experience to match its incredible
surroundings. His curation involves a selection of hand picked artists,
as well as other elements to be revealed over time, all of which
comprise a feature presentation of next summer’s event. He speaks to it
here, and reveals the title of his presentation:
"It is a
massive honor to be asked to be the first guest curator for the Fire in
the Mountains festival. I have decided to name my curator showcase "On
Wings Over Utgard"; inspired by the thematics from the coming
Enslaved-album. Modern man is a being that has forgotten how chaos,
darkness and decay are as important and beautiful parts of existence as
all the bliss, youth and light we over-feed ourselves in the
(dis-)Information Age. What better scenic metaphor to realize this part
of the overall vision than at Fire in the Mountains; surrounded by wild,
chaotic nature. Where life is how it was meant to be; uncontrolled,
balanced and unified. I cannot wait to start showing you all the artists
I am inviting to sonically and lyrically illustrate all this!”
