ITP V.012 EDITORIAL: THE ART OF: "DJENT": PROGRESSIVE/TECHNICAL EXTREME METAL IN THE DIGITAL AGE

All this talk about DJENT, a guitar tone, and now, a newly anointed sub genre of extreme metal. Funny, I've heard the word "DJENT" thrown around for years now, by unlikely people whom are not even metal heads, and I wasn't sure of the context, lol.
At the age of 41, ITP's V.012 author has experienced many trends in music, as the trends were labeled as cross over, transitional, scene genres. Were GRUNGE and NU METAL really genres, not really, just a term to define alternative hard rock combined with other non metal elements (funk, punk, rap). The usual label for heavy music transcending scene generics would be post metal or post hardcore. The most asinine would be the term "The New Wave Of American Heavy Metal", a term coined to represent the rise of metal core or thrash/core.

NEW MILLENNIUM CYANIDE CHRIST: At the dawn of new millennium, a progressive scene burst from the ashes of thrash, death metal and doom. Swedish progressive extreme metal warriors MESHUGGAH coined the term "DJENT". DJENT, inspired by the progressive elements of RUSH, CYNIC, ATHEIST and DEATH, and damn proud to down tune with alternative guitar tunings (ALA KORN), palm mute and experiment with technical elements, poly rhythms and orgasmic shred.

The gate way to DJENT from classic rock would be RUSH. The gateway from extreme metal to DJENT would be CYNIC, ATHEIST and later (Individual Thought Patterns) era DEATH. The gateway from thrash to DJENT would be AND JUSTICE FOR ALL era METALLICA, or SLAYER and VOIVOD. The gateway from extreme (DEATH) metal to DJENT would be CANNIBAL CORPSE, SUFFOCATION, INCANTATION, MORBID ANGEL, ENTOMBED and Di Salvo era CRYPTOPSY. The grind gateway to DJENT would be NAPALM DEATH, BRUTAL TRUTH, ROTTEN SOUND, GORGUTS, !T.O.O.H!, LYKATHEA AFLAME. The doom gateway to DJENT would be BLACK SABBATH, SAINT VITUS, THERGOTHON, ESOTERIC and OPETH..

The Gateway from progressive hard rock would be YES, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, PINK FLOYD, and DREAM THEATER.

The Gateway to DJENT from melodic extreme thrash would be AT THE GATES, CARCASS.

Also, laugh if you will, the ambient/black metal scene, DSBM (depressive, suicidal, black metal) movement has some DJENT too, progressive in atmosphere, and cultural instrumentation.: HYPOTHERMIA, NEGURA BUNGET,URFAUST,ENSLAVED.
I even consider certain funeral doom bands to be DJENT: ESOTERIC, URNA, SUNN O))).

MESHUGGAH, SIKTH, NECROPHAGIST,DECREPIT BIRTH,CEPHALIC CARNAGE, SPAWN OF POSSESSION,
TEXTURES,AUGURY, ANIMALS AS LEADERS,ORIGIN are all DJENT. On the metal CORE side of DJENT would be VEIL OF MAYA, WHITECHAPEL and THE FACELESS.

Progressive/tech hard rock DJENT would be THE MARS VOLTA, PERIPHERY,TEXTURE,TESSERAcT.

Atmospheric/technical death metal bands PORTAL, ULCERATE experiment with dark atmospheres, technical shred and brutality, as they too are DJENT.
Hey, I'm thinking OWS (OCCUPY WALL STREET) is progressive politically and DJENT.
...Of course all of if not most of the aforementioned bands have been booked on THE SUMMER SLAUGHTER TOURS as I would love to see the unholy atmospheres of PORTAL and ULCERATE booked on THE SUMMER SLAUGHTER TOUR with the technical brutality of France's GOROD..

Long Island, New York's, very own DREAM THEATER have been shredding progressive metal
anthems for over 25 years and marketed progressive metal into the new millennium with last decades PROGRESSIVE NATION tour with OPETH.

FRANK ZAPPA, JOHN ZORN, MR BUNGLES and PINK FLOYD are the ultimate DJENT grand pops.

Of course, there are zillion and one bands, trying to break formula, ripping off MESHUGGAH for the DJENT metal Olympics. DECAPITATED's latest release "Carnival is Forever" is a blatant MESHUGGAH clone. Of course, combining good songwriting with brutality, technical shred and DJENT would be awesome as most of these so called DJENT bands CAN'T pull it off.

...Of course there's German technical death metal project NECROPHAGIST as it's been 8 years and a off shoot clone (OBSCURA) since the bands last release. In fact, former NECROPHAGIST members in OBSCURA have released more music in the last 4 years than Muhammed SuiƧmez.. All NECROPHAGIST encouragement here on this FACEBOOK PAGE please: http://www.facebook.com/NecrophagistFansWantAnAlbum

ITP's author has NEVER mentioned the term "DJENT" in this extreme metal blog until now, and had been extremely confused and somewhat disturbed by this label (I,in some ignorance, associated DJENT with progressive/POWER metal as power metal is my least fave genre of metal) of progressive, experimental genres of extreme/heavy music. Ironically, I've been listening to this DJENT stuff for eons, with a more expansive definition of the musical term. Someone said DJENT, and I'm thinking "WTF".

I will admit, ITP (all versions of this metal blog) are DJENT in death, black, DSBM, grind, thrash and doom metal.

Yeh, someone put a marketing term on a guitar tone, and now it's expanded into a genre, a formula of extreme metal clones.

However, DJENT is so much more than a guitar tone or an extreme metal sub genre, it's an expansion of extreme music's capabilities, experimenting and expanding within progressive rock and metals musical scope to the most technical, brutal and atmospheric extremes.

The digital age has spawned, PRO TOOLS, digital music and recording, and while triggered drum blasts aren't for everyone, DJENTS progressive musical inspiration has spawned a resurgence in extreme metal, inspired musicians and have even frustrated those whom just can't shred.

Swedish progressive metal warriors MESHUGGAH's 21 minute epic EP "I" (2004-FRACTURED TRANSMITTER) is a complete metal orgasm, well worth the listen and the prayer they will play it live. In fact, "I" would pay to see MESHUGGAH play that epic tune live.

DJENT? Let's just just remember: progressive/experimental/technical metal, OR Progressive/Extreme metal.

FROM THE URBAN DICTIONARY: DJENT:
Djent is used to describe a certain kind of guitar tone characterized by medium-high gain, a quick-release noise gate to emphasize staccato playing, a cut of most bass below 200Hz for a tight low end, a slight boost around 800hz for clarity, and a noticeable boost around 1.6Khz to emphasize pick attack. When a two-octave power chord is palm-muted with this tone, a "djent" sound is created rather than the typical chunkier sound.

Djent also refers to repeated staccato playing of the lowest-pitch string on a detuned 6 string or 7 string guitar with a powerful attack such that the string goes very slightly sharp upon the pick's release from the string. Lower-gauge strings are used to facilitate this.

Djent tone is many times created using a Line 6 amp modeling product such as the Pod series or the Axe-Fx. When possible, an amp model such as the Big Bottom or Modern High Gain on these devices is used in conjunction with a modeled Tube Screamer in front. Engl and Mesa amplifiers are typically used when tube amplification is preferred.

Djent is widely acknowledged to have come first from Meshuggah, but Misha 'Bulb' Mansoor has arguably popularized the sound. Djent's typical uses give rise to a "genre" of djent that is characterized by hi-fi compressed production, polyrhythmic/staccato distorted riffs and ambient clean passages which make liberal use of 9 and other "jazzy" chords. Electronica influences such as glitchy percussion and synthesizers are also incorporated.
FROM THE URBAN DICTIONARY:DJENT:
A style of music in the metal world. Djent, unlike most music, is not a genre. It is a style of playing guitar. This music style has an intricate picking technique. This style has no rhythm nor does it have any timing. This style has a very small fan-base. The fan-base is so small that it is an unrecognized category of music. For something to be music it needs a recognizable fan-base. Therefore, the "djent" category of music is not a genre or musical in any way what so ever.
That "djent" band is so band i believe my ears threw up blood and promptly cut themselves off.
