Stepping outside the given boundaries and striving for innovative ways to present a new experience to the fans. That's what great bands seek. Norwegian avant-garde metallers VULTURE INDUSTRIES teamed up with HAPPY GORILLA DANCE COMPANY to create the theatrical performance TURNING GOLEM.

The outcome is an energetic show that will blast your ears off, while your mind is blown by the ludicrous events on stage. TURNING GOLEM features music from VULTURE INDUSTRIES' latest release "The Tower" as well also additional material composed to fit the unification, inspired by the music of ancient sumerians – the oldest written music that has been found to date.

BUMBLEFOOT

Last one before Monday. We're extremely pleased to announce A.C.T (SWE) to play Headway!

With band highlights such as tours with Fish and Saga, four critically acclaimed albums, two gigs at Sweden Rock Festival, opening for Yngwie Malmsteen and being “big in Japan” it would be fair to say that A.C.T are a highly successful band in the progressive rock genre. However, the title of their last album “Silence” from 2006 is also an appropriate description of the band’s status since then, leaving many fans worldwide yearning for a life sign. Until now!

Following the release of their much anticipated fifth album “V” next spring, A.C.T will make its live appearance at Headway. A.C.T’s highly eclectic and melodic blend of genres has become a reference style within progressive rock and succeeds in attracting audiences ranging from Frank Zappa fans to the followers of Saga, Queen, Rush, Dream Theater, or ELO. Added to that, their energetic live performance makes this a must see for the musically interested in general.

March 4th 2014 will see the Dutch live debut of Hastings' prog heroes KINGBATHMAT at Headway!

KINGBATHMAT (UK) are a powered up psychedelic progressive alternative rock band, who have independently released seven albums to date. Their two most recent efforts, "Truth Button" (2012) and "Overcoming The Monster" (2013), were hailed as masterpieces.

The musical style of KINGBATHMAT is difficult to pigeon hole and does not sit comfortably in any particular category of music. Sometimes described as "the sound of Pink Floyd wrestling with Kasabian", or "Black Sabbath cuddled by extravagant ELO harmonies", the band resembles a sonic expedition, visiting genres such as progressive rock and classic pop, abruptly torn into an uncompromising sledgehammer heavy metal riff.

KINGBATHMAT do not align themselves with convention, they have ditched the giblet hustlers and they endeavour to buck the trend and to not take themselves too seriously. For they do not look for, or court approval. KINGBATHMAT are not beholding to a multi-national company, a debt, or a self proposed obligation. They do what they want.

And we're glad they wanted to play at Headway!

Another Dutch delight on Sunday. We're happy to welcome UNWRITTEN PAGES on stage.

The band name shows how the band like to approach their musical collaboration first and foremost. Always pushing themselves beyond their own and everyone else's expectations - in every single sense of the word. Two years after their two-disc debut "Noah", UNWRITTEN PAGES released the impressive album "Fringe Kitchen". If there is one overarching concept shared by both releases, it is that of a musical journey that is intended to be experienced from start to finish. At the same time, the new album marks a complete musical and lyrical shift. While not a traditional concept album, there certainly is a theme of self-imprisonment and the presence of a dreadful inner passenger.

With their live debut at Headway, the band turn another page.

Somewhere around this time May 3rd 2014, this band will hit the Headway-stage: THE ALGORITHM.

The brainchild of French DJ / producer Rémi Gallego, THE ALGORITHM infuse modern metal riffs and rhythms with a menagerie of electronic sub-genres such as IDM, chiptune and breakcore, brewing his own style of fiercely heavy and individual music. Imagine a mash up of electronic driven breakdowns, djent guitars, gut wrenching subs and dub-step melodies all working together to fluidly pummel your head into the future. Or, to put it simple: THE ALGORITHM smashes genres like The Hulk smashes everything.

Armed with drummer Mike Malyan of progressive metal pack MONUMENTS (UK), THE ALGORITHM ́s live experience is like nothing you have experienced before.

Showdown Sunday! We're going to present you part of the line-up for the second day, starting with EXIVIOUS (NL).

How does an instrumental band speak to a listener? Through melancholic melodies and energetic rhythms, dense harmonies, starbursts of noise and breathless interludes. Emotions from life captured in sound. That, in a nutshell, is EXIVIOUS, a quartet that channels a truly unique voice within the contemporary music scene. Their sound is hard to define; it operates in a space where metal meets fusion meets post-rock and still is none of the above.

EXIVIOUS's new sophomore album "Liminal" draws not from musical influences, but from life itself, capturing emotions, conveying feelings and experiences in a way that instrumental music rarely explores. It’s experimental, original and most importantly, immersive, drawing the listener into a world of sound that is at once challenging and intriguing.

It's Saturday, so today we might as well reveal some of the Saturday line-up. We present you WE INSIST!

WE INSIST! (FRA) is more than a rock band, it's a project. The desire to battle for new musical ideas and reject conformity makes their music impossible to pin-down: is it noise, post-hardcore, metal, indie rock, pop or experimental? In 2010, the band began composing a live soundtrack for Walter Ruttmann's film “Die Sinfonie der Großtadt”. This music has been reworked, modified, condensed, and complemented with new ideas. The outcome is WE INSIST!'s sixth album which will be released on the 17th of February 2014. Ten concise songs for what will be their first self-titled album, and a new start.

We don't object to having WE INSIST! onstage! Check out the video and see why.

It's still Saturday, so here's another addition to our line-up: we welcome back EPHEL DUATH (USA) at Headway.

Exceptional, experimental metal act EPHEL DUATH returns with its first full-length album in five years under the belt. Ignited bycommitment and passion, "Hemmed By Light, Shaped By Darkness" is a multi-layered hybrid of death metal, jazz and post rock: a career defining statement from a band never bounded by rules.

For this piece of progressive work, EPHEL DUATH's founding father Davide Tiso joined forces with female metal legend Karyn Crisis on lead vocals. With intuition set as the only significant parameter, these two soul searchers take their uncompromising will to experiment to a whole new level of intensity. On the album, and live!

FROM EPHEL DUATH:
We are excited to announce that Ephel Duath have been invited to return playing at the Headway Festival, one of the best progressive rock festivals in Europe.

FROM PATRICIA THOMAS MANAGEMENT:
The recent collaboration between Norwegian Avant-garde metallers VULTURE INDUSTRIES and the HAPPY GORILLA DANCE COMPANY which resulted in the theatrical performance “Turning Golem”, has proved to be a considerable crowd-pleaser, so much so, in fact, that the show has been booking into various venues and festivals both this year and next.  Interest in the show, which is part rooted in the heavier segment of experimental/progressive metal which features VULTURE INDUSTRIES performing music from their latest release “The Tower”, and part theatre performance which features the HAPPY GORILLA DANCE COMPANY, has grown, and as a result journalist Andrea Chirulescu has produced a “behind the scenes” documentary which explores the he ideas and concepts behind “Turning Golem”.
Featuring interviews with VULTURE INDUSTRIES frontman Bjornar E. Nilsen, who explains how the whole idea came about and how it developed, as well as with the other members of the band – guitarists Oyvind Madsen and Eyvind Huse, bassist Kyrre Teigen and drummer Tor Helge Gjengedal, who talk about the difference between performing as a band as opposed to being part of a performance ensemble, whilst members of the HAPPY GORILLA DANCE COMPANY explain their part in the project.  The documentary, which is in English, was filmed in Bergen when “Turning Golem” was recently performed at the Garage, and is currently streaming on the YouTube Channel of the Norwegian webzine Eternal Terror.

VIDEO BELOW: FROM EPHEL DUATH: "LANDS END":  (COURTESY OF EPHEL DUATH):   Metal Hammer UK asked me to shoot a two minute video about a place or a landscape that inspires me to write music for Ephel Duath. Here it is. That's the spot where I go to write lyrics and to clear my head up.
