JUDAS PRIEST WINS GRAMMY FOR BEST METAL PERFORMANCE, IMMORTAL REJECTS SPELLMANN NOMINATION

ITP does NOT pay attention to the" grannies", (the METAL awards regarding the Grammies is not even televised) however JUDAS PRIEST just won a Grammy Award (BEST METAL PERFORMANCE) congrats to ROB HALFORD for being a metal GOD. FROM BLABERMOUTH.NET: The pre-telecast ceremony at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, which are being held tonight (Sunday, January 31) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. JUDAS PRIEST was nominated for the track "Dissident Aggressor", from the band's 2009 live album "A Touch of Evil Live". The band's lead vocalist Rob Halford and drummer Scott Travis accepted the award at the event.

The nominees in this year's "Metal" category were as follows:

* JUDAS PRIEST - "Dissident Aggressor" (from "A Touch of Evil Live"
* LAMB OF GOD - "Set to Fail" (from "Wrath")
* MEGADETH - "Head Crusher" (from "Endgame")
* MINISTRY - "Señor Peligro" (from "Adios...")
* SLAYER - "Hate Worldwide" (from "World Painted Blood")

Only albums released between October 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009 could be considered for this year's awards.

The Grammys are determined by 12,000 music industry professionals who belong to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live in high definition TV and 5.1 Surround Sound on CBS from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. EST.

Nominations for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards were announced on December 2, 2009 by The Recording Academy and reflected an eclectic mix of the best and brightest over the past year in music, as determined by the voting members of The Academy. For the second year, nominations for the annual Grammy Awards were announced on primetime television as part of "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown To Music's Biggest Night". The one-hour special — broadcast live on CBS from Club Nokia at L.A. live — featured the announcement of nominations in several categories as well as performances by the BLACK EYED PEAS, DJ/producer David Guetta, Maxwell, Nick Jonas & THE ADMINISTRATION, Sugarland, and host LL Cool J. Presenters included LINKIN PARK, George Lopez, Katy Perry, Smokey Robinson, Ringo Starr, T-Pain, and Dwight Yoakam.

A complete list of Grammy nominees can be found at this location.
However, in NORWAY black metal veterans IMMORTAL REJECTED the bands SPELLMANN
nomination (Norwegian equivalent of the Grammies ) keeping it KVLT and underground.
FROM BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
Norwegian black metallers IMMORTAL have "rejected" their nomination in the "Metal" category at this year's Spellemann awards.

The nominees for the largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show, which is often referred to as the country's equivalent to the American Grammy Awards, were announced earlier today (Monday, January 25) and included nods to IMMORTAL for the band's latest album, "All Shall Fall", as well as to the most recent releases from CODE, ÅRABROT and THE CUMSHOTS, all of whom were also nominated in the "Metal" category.

After receiving the news that they were nominated for a Spellemann award, the members of IMMORTAL issued a brief statement saying, "IMMORTAL says no to Spellemann nomination. IMMORTAL has registered that we are nominated to a Spellemann award for 'All Shall Fall'. We hereby wish to announce that we reject this nomination."

IMMORTAL manager Håkon Grav told the blog of the Norwegian TV program "Lydverket" that the IMMORTAL members themselves should explain why they have chosen to reject the Spellemann nomination, but offered his personal view on the drama.

"IMMORTAL doesn't necessarily want to be the biggest band in the world, they just want to be the rawest band," he said. "And honestly, one has to say that there are few black metal bands who have kept their credibility while still playing for 80,000 fans around Europe."

When "Lydverket" contacted Marte Thorsby, the head of the Spellemann board, to get her response to IMMORTAL's statement, she said that it would not pose a problem for the awards show. "We're not gonna force anybody to be nominated for a Spellemann award, so we'll remove them from the nominations. This is completely unproblematic."

METALLICA: MORGAN HARRINGTON CASE

EDITORS NOTE: I have to compliment \M/ETALLICA, sobriety really HAS helped this band, look how TIGHT METALLICA play NOW compared to the 90's and 80's, damn, they sound soo TIGHT, very good performance in SOUTH AMERICA (ARGENTINA). Hang in there SOUTH AMERICA, METALLICA will be back and they aint stopping anytime soon. 4:36 of METALLICA's "ONE" is such CLASSIC thrash, nice twin guitar work between Kirk and James. We Americans need a second round, and second generation of the old Bay area thrash big four, METALLICA, EXODUS, MEGADETH and TESTAMENT tour, or even ANTHRAX, or perhaps SLAAAYER. I don't know if that's ever going to come to fruition, but it would be cool.
This ones dedicated to MORGAN HARRINGTON (didn't know her, however, all the best to her family, and friends, stay strong) and all \m/etallica fans worldwide, and all they put up with. Last time I saw METALLICA was WOODSTOCK '94, long journey to the show.
FROM BLABBERMOUTH.NET: Argentina's La Viola conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich and filmed the band's January 21, 2010 performance at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires. Watch the footage below.

A policeman was injured and 120 people arrested when rioting broke out outside METALLICA's January 26, 2010 concert in Santiago, Chile, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune. Authorities said that most of the arrests were made when hundreds of fans who did not have tickets attempted to force their way into the Club Hipico horse-racing grounds to see the show, which was attended by a crowd of more than 50,000. Police colonel Miguel Angel Castro said, "A group of people tried to enter without tickets and Carabineros (militarized police) had to act, launching water."

Charges against those arrested included disorderly conduct, drug possession and drinking in public.

The gig was the sixth on METALLICA's current South American trek, which began on January 19 with the band's first-ever appearance in Lima, Peru. The crowd of 55,000 at that show was the biggest for a musical event in Peruvian history.

The group wraps the first leg of the jaunt this weekend in Brazil, resuming in early March with stops in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Panama and Colombia.
FROM ROANOKE.COM:
The ruling ends speculation that Morgan Harrington died of exposure after wandering away from a concert.
Courtesy of the Harrington family
Morgan Harrington's death was a homicide, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond said Tuesday.
Harrington, 20, of Roanoke County disappeared from a Metallica concert in Charlottesville on Oct. 17. Her skeletal remains were found Jan. 26 in an Albemarle County hayfield nearly 10 miles south of where she was last seen.
The medical examiner's determination closes out speculation that she wandered away from Charlottesville and died of exposure on a chilly night.
A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said the office is not yet able to release information on how Harrington was killed.
Forensic experts say it could take weeks, or longer, to make that determination because of the decomposition of her body over the past three months. If, as her family believes, her body was left in the hayfield the night she disappeared, it has endured warm and cold weather, rain and snow storms and possibly the activity of animals and insects.
All of those factors could "make it a lot more difficult to determine the cause and manner of death," said Emil Moldovan, an adjunct instructor of criminal justice at Radford University and former death investigator in the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office.
For instance, Moldovan said, if Harrington were bludgeoned or shot to death, that might be readily apparent to examiners, but if she were strangled, there would be little evidence outside the possible fracture of the tiny hyoid bone in the neck. The skeletal and tissue remains also might not show any sign of a stabbing.
The announcement from the medical examiner's office comes as Harrington's family prepares to memorialize her Friday with a 3:30 p.m. Mass at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke. The family plans a public reception afterward at the Hotel Roanoke.

AFTER DEATH GUITARIST (LEON VILBA's) FAMILY APPEAL FOR RETURN OF BODY

The surviving family of UK metal core band AFTER DEATH are appealing for the return of
LEON VILBA's body after he and bandmate TIMOTHY KENNELLY drowned (last week) in Brazil while on a South American tour with MASTER.
FROM CAMDEN NEW JOURNAL:

Appeal to fly After Death rock guitarist Leon Vilalba's body home from Brazil after tragic drowning

Leon’s mother Lucretia sits with a group of his friends

Published: 28 January 2010
by PETER GRUNER

THE mother of a Camden rock guitarist who drowned with a bandmate in Brazil spoke of her devastation this week.
Lucretia Vilalba, whose son Leon, 21, died with bandmate Timothy Kennelly, 18, from Ealing, was preparing to fly back to the Philippines to receive the young man’s body after it was washed up on a beach in Brazil last week.
Ms Vilalba, a single mother who works as a cleaner, described Leon as the best son a mother could have. “He was very kind and caring and I shall miss him terribly,” she said.
But now she needs to raise £10,000 to fly Leon’s body from Brazil to the Philippines where he will be buried in a family plot.
“Neither officials in Brazil nor the Philippines want to help me financially,” she added. “I’m having to borrow money and my employer has made a contribution. One or two people I know are organising events to help me out.”
Leon, who was born in the UK, attended St Aloysius’ primary school in Somers Town, before going on to St Aloysius’ College in Highgate. He then attended sixth form at La Swap in Highgate before embarking on a year’s art foundation course at London Metropolitan University.
Leon and Tim were on a six-week tour with heavy metal band After Death, as a support at for US group Master.

Norway's URGEHAL are a band whom have vehemently stood for the fore most, nihilistic principles of black metal, in stark contrast to the neo black metal movement and humanity as we know it.
URGEHAL came to fruition right after the second wave of Norwegian black metal and (since 1992) have consistently released slabs of vicious and quality black metal.
URGEHAL have endured a few lineup changes as drummer Uruz (Jarle Byberg) left the band
to be replaced by Erik Renton as the band also recruited new bassist Mannevond in replacement of Chiron (aka Ulv).
URGEHAL recently signed with UNDERGROUND ACTIVISTS (a sub label of SEASON OF MIST) and continue the bands prolific run of necro, norsk and unpretentious black metal.
URGEHAL's "IKONOKLAST" enters with the track "Stesolid Self-Destruction to Damnation" and a morbid sample, "That cold 'aint the weather, that's death approaching." "Stesolid Self-Destruction to Damnation" proceeds to rip you a new asshole with primitive, crusty riffs,
blast beats, venomous black metal fury, and good if not one dimensional vocals. \m/ -l- \m/..
"Dødelagt" invokes a mid paced black and roll feel, raise the horns and spin yer hair. "Dødelagt"
(at 1:19) invokes a melodic riff, and takes off with blast beats into the fury of Satan's coven, then
back to the mid paced riffing, and it doesn't get boring either.
"Cut Their Tongue Shut Their Prayer" invokes good riffing, the fury and intensity of troo
black metal as the tune (minus the guitar solos at it's ending) invokes an ungodly atmosphere through repetitive melody.
"The Necessity of Total Genocide" invokes a melancholy intro, crawling into a black and roll, tightly played chaos. "The Necessity of Total Genocide" trades hellvete with Satan for a faster pace, blast beats and interesting melodic riffs with good transitions.
"Kniven Rider Dypt I Natt" rolls in primtive, played tight with thrash drumming and expressive screams via Trondr Nefas."Kniven Rider Dypt I Natt" intensifies for a headbanging moshable horn raiser without any pretentious norse core, keyboards, or melo-black. Imagine driving down the snowy norse roads into the forests of hellvette, good atmosphere for your hellride.
"Astral Projection to Rabid Hell" is a mid tempo hellride, with a rhythm section pacing it self for a quality segue (4:19) into blast beats for a raw, necro atmosphere.
"Approaching Doom" invokes the primitive 1st wave of black metal feel, played with an intensity and conviction I haven't heard since 1992. "Approaching Doom" varies drum techniques (Erik Renton) from punk/thrash drumming to blast beats so effortlessly, giving the tune a diversity enough to keep the listener engaged.
"Holocaust in Utopia", invokes some quality almost (dare I say it) death metal, melodic riffing, slowing down to a dark mid paced, crawl of atonal riffs, eventually calling upon Lucifer from the melodic riffing to a black and roll intensity. "Holocaust in Utopia" (5:35) slows down to crawl into a dark, melancholy abyss.
URGEHAL's "IKONOKLAST" closes with it's longest tune "Sopor Necrosanctus" as the band invokes a prog rock rhythm, segueing into some quality black metal and melancholy, dark atmospheres, played with exquisite precision. "Sopor Necrosanctus" (6:30) slows down for a dark journey into a melancholic atmosphere as lightly sprinkled, classical keyboards/piano emote a beautiful ambient outro into the apocalypse.
URGEHAL play black metal with a malicious, unforgiving intensity as the bands new rhythm section ( Erik Renton-drums and Mannevond-bass) inject a hell bent versatility to the bands arsenal.
The production for URGEHAL's "IKONOKLAST" emotes a warm, intimate quality, nothing flashy, just enough of a necro edge for quality sound.
URGEHAL's primitive sensibilities come as no surprise as the band has been taping into the most misanthropic ethos for over 15 years now, without pandering to trends, changing or even a hint of progression. It's horrifying that URGEHAL are that consistent, as the band never rots or decays within it's longevity.
While some prefer URGEHAL's more aggressive work for it's vicious, nihilistic
hellride, I do enjoy the variety the band has to offer on this release.
While URGEHAL didn't event the 1st wave of Norsk black metal wheel, nor are they reinventing it, these misanthropic Satanic warlords have probably driven plenty of miles on that wheel, as there is no reason to change that tire now.
.. "IKONOKLAST" is another quality release from Norway's grim warlords, as we have URGEHAL to thank for the tradition of KVLT and necro/ norsk black metal.

WEEDEATER ANNOUNCES SXSW "TONE DEAF" SHOWCASE and TOUR UPDATE

North Carolina (USA) sludge/doomsters WEEDEATER have sent this update as the band have announced an appearance on the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas and a tour with THE GATES OF SLUMBER.
FROM WEEDEATER MYSPACE AND FOUNDRY OF DOOM RADIO:
Hey there,

Here's a quick update...Dixie is still resting his foot and only drinking half as much bourbon as usual so that he is healed in time for Weedater's hobbled yet glorious return to the live arena. Below are the tour dates; we'll have ticket links for you soon so keep checking back for updates. We will be playing new material from our upcoming release "Jason...The Dragon", to be recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in late April. Much thanks to master Steve for letting a bunch of crazy, dirty, toeless, gun-toting hillbillies back into his pristine studio so we can scuff-up the floor and bang a bunch of his pots & pans together so as to call it "music". That took some class (more than we have anyway) and in all seriousness we are truly appreciative for Steve and everyone else at EA being so cool about rescheduling this session. The support bands on this US tour are all incredible and include: Black Cobra, ASG, Black Tusk, The Gates of Slumber, US Christmas, and Struck by Lightning. During the Tone Deaf SXSW showcase in Austin, the mighty Rwake will also make a rare appearance joining the party for one absolutely insane night of music. We'll have more updates shortly on the summer tour / fests in Europe as well as the tentative release date for "Jason...", so you'll be hearing back from us soon enough. See you out there, don't step on Dixie's foot, and of course, thanks to all of you for your continued support!

ITP REVIEW: SARCOLYTIC: THEE ARCANE PROGENY

BAND: SARCOLYTIC (AUSTIN, TEXAS-USA) GENRE: DEATH METAL LABEL: UNIQUE LEADER RELEASE DATE: 1/19/2010
PREVIOUS RELEASES (CATALOG): LIMB SPLITTER (SPLIT-2006-OSSUARY INDUSTRIES), SARCOLYTIC (EP-2005-LACERATED ENEMY RECORDS)
BEST RELEASE: THEE ARCANE PROGENY (2010)

TRACKLISTING: SARCOLYTIC: THEE ARCANE PROGENY:
01. Thee Arcane Progeny
02. Exalted Gift Of The Abzu
03. The Seed Of All Beginnings
04. Manus Obscurus
05. Expulsion From Desolate
06. The Secrets Of Divinities
07. Emissary
08. Scribe Of Celestial Omen
09. Resurrected For Bloodshed
ITP RATING: *** 1/2
PRODUCTION: *** 1/2
SONGWRITING: ***1/2
PERFORMANCE: *** 1/2
SARCOLYTIC are an Austin, Texas (USA) based slam/death metal band featuring members of DISGORGE, CINERARY (Rick Myers-drums), IMAGES OF VIOLENCE (Mark Denton-bass, John Zig-vocals) and SECT OF EXECRATION (Steven Watkins-guitar). SARCOLYTIC were conceived (2003) as a side project of said members primary bands whom all have credibility and potential of their own, as the band is now a full time project of said members.
SARCOLYTIC are brutal slam/death metal with a dark, occult vision of world disorder. At best, SARCOLYTIC combine some discordant rhythm riffs, slam death brutality with a splash of the melodic.
Texas death metallers SARCOLYTIC's "Thee Arcane Progeny" opens with the title track with an ominous intro and "UGGGGGGGGGGH". SARCOLYTIC's "Thee Arcane Progeny" is total brutal blast beat intensity, with riffs galore and some technical riffage from guitarist Steven Watkins.
However, the drum production could use some work, sounding generic, like the over triggered, typewriter drum sound, and I can barely hear the snare. John Zig's vocals invoke a Frank Mullen feel, with identical vocal phrasings with some backing screams here and there.
"Exalted Gift Of The Abzu" invoke some interesting time changes as the riffage is some what uninteresting. At 1:12 into "Exalted Gift Of The Abzu" the old New York Death Metal breakdown is invoked, kinda funny, and you KNOW you've heard this before. More interesting are the rhythm guitar riffs, invoking a dark brutality, and some technical aspects here and there.
"The Seed Of All Beginnings" invokes a dramatic, brutal intro as the tune shifts with good time changes, rhythm guitar riffs and and slam death brutality as you might have to listen twice to catch the myriad of riff changes.
"Manus Obscurus", clocking in at less than three minutes, invokes some intense brutality in the first few seconds, and then trades steam and brutality for atmosphere, or just lack of ideas for riffs, then back to riffs that mirror the vocals. "Manus Obscurus" chugs along for a while until
it picks up steam for generic speed riffing, and chug, chug, chug.
"Expulsion From Desolate" invoke some interesting off kilter riffing, combined with speed and brutality as the rhythm guitar pair in well with John Zig's vocal phrasings. "Expulsion From Desolate" invokes some melodic CRYPTOPSY like riffs, played tight before a left turn for some discordant riffing and some prog influences.
"The Secrets Of Divinities" is more intense brutality, although the guitar tone could be a little cleaner to bring out some of the riffs. However, "The Secrets Of Divinities" invoke some dark, brutal shiznit, pummeling you with occasional dark, atmospheric riffing.
"Emissary" invokes extreme brutality, melodic riffing and breakdowns. SARCOLYTIC experiment with melody and a "brutala-ful" breakdown :54 into "Emissary" and some interesting time changes.
"Scribe Of Celestial Omen" enters in with generic riffs played with conviction, and sometimes repetitive (1:00). However, as the song progresses, the rhythm riffs mesh well with the vocals for an interesting melody, setting a dark atmosphere (2:46) ending the song with that, almost epic riff.
SARCOLYTIC's "THEE ARCANE PROGENY" closes with the track "Resurrected For Bloodshed", crawling in with a mid paced tribal drum beat, before invoking melodic, almost black metal riffing. From there, "Resurrected For Bloodshed" uping the ante to quality slam death metal, with both melodic, mid paced, and brutal fast paced riffing.
Yes, SARCOLYTIC are one of those brutal, slam death bands and while not a clone of SUFFOCATION the bands riffs just aren't all that impressive. I would prefer better drum production as the snare and bass are barely audible, and a cleaner guitar tone.
SARCOLYTIC may define the bands identity within consolidating brutality and melody, making for an interesting dark atmosphere, which at best could be epic.
Otherwise, SARCOLYTIC aren't all that original, talented or interesting compared to band
members previous or primary projects and perhaps the lack of self indulgent wankery is just the point.
When SARCOLYTIC catch a melodic riff with some tight as hell, slam death brutality, it feels good, almost epic. With time and good songwriting, we'll be hearing from SARCOLYTIC again.

ITP WORLD APOCALYPSE: WORLD KNOWN SOCIAL POLITICAL AUTHOR/HISTORIAN HOWARD ZINN PASSES AT 87

World known social political author and historian HOWARD ZINN has passed at 87. HOWARD ZINN has penned what many would consider NOW text book reading including "THE PEOPLES HISTORY OF THE UNTIED STATES" a much more accurate and comprehensive history of the USA and many more social political historic novels. RIP to HOWARD ZINN.

Howard Zinn, historian who challenged status quo, dies at 87

By Mark Feeney, Globe Staff

Howard Zinn, the Boston University historian and political activist who was an early opponent of US involvement in Vietnam and a leading faculty critic of BU president John Silber, died of a heart attack today in Santa Monica, Calif, where he was traveling, his family said. He was 87.

"His writings have changed the consciousness of a generation, and helped open new paths to understanding and its crucial meaning for our lives," Noam Chomsky, the left-wing activist and MIT professor, once wrote of Dr. Zinn. "When action has been called for, one could always be confident that he would be on the front lines, an example and trustworthy guide."
Howard Zinn Howard Zinn.

For Dr. Zinn, activism was a natural extension of the revisionist brand of history he taught. Dr. Zinn's best-known book, "A People's History of the United States" (1980), had for its heroes not the Founding Fathers -- many of them slaveholders and deeply attached to the status quo, as Dr. Zinn was quick to point out -- but rather the farmers of Shays' Rebellion and the union organizers of the 1930s.

As he wrote in his autobiography, "You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train" (1994), "From the start, my teaching was infused with my own history. I would try to be fair to other points of view, but I wanted more than 'objectivity'; I wanted students to leave my classes not just better informed, but more prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, more prepared to speak up, to act against injustice wherever they saw it. This, of course, was a recipe for trouble."

Certainly, it was a recipe for rancor between Dr. Zinn and Silber. Dr. Zinn twice helped lead faculty votes to oust the BU president, who in turn once accused Dr. Zinn of arson (a charge he quickly retracted) and cited him as a prime example of teachers "who poison the well of academe."

Dr. Zinn was a cochairman of the strike committee when BU professors walked out in 1979. After the strike was settled, he and four colleagues were charged with violating their contract when they refused to cross a picket line of striking secretaries. The charges against "the BU Five" were soon dropped, however.

Dr. Zinn was born in New York City on Aug. 24, 1922, the son of Jewish immigrants, Edward Zinn, a waiter, and Jennie (Rabinowitz) Zinn, a housewife. He attended New York public schools and worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard before joining the Army Air Force during World War II. Serving as a bombardier in the Eighth Air Force, he won the Air Medal and attained the rank of second lieutenant.

After the war, Dr. Zinn worked at a series of menial jobs until entering New York University as a 27-year-old freshman on the GI Bill. Professor Zinn, who had married Roslyn Shechter in 1944, worked nights in a warehouse loading trucks to support his studies. He received his bachelor's degree from NYU, followed by master's and doctoral degrees in history from Columbia University.

Dr. Zinn was an instructor at Upsala College and lecturer at Brooklyn College before joining the faculty of Spelman College in Atlanta, in 1956. He served at the historically black women's institution as chairman of the history department. Among his students were the novelist Alice Walker, who called him "the best teacher I ever had," and Marian Wright Edelman, future head of the Children's Defense Fund.

During this time, Dr. Zinn became active in the civil rights movement. He served on the executive committee of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the most aggressive civil rights organization of the time, and participated in numerous demonstrations.

Dr. Zinn became an associate professor of political science at BU in 1964 and was named full professor in 1966.

The focus of his activism now became the Vietnam War. Dr. Zinn spoke at countless rallies and teach-ins and drew national attention when he and another leading antiwar activist, Rev. Daniel Berrigan, went to Hanoi in 1968 to receive three prisoners released by the North Vietnamese.

Dr. Zinn's involvement in the antiwar movement led to his publishing two books: "Vietnam: The Logic of Withdrawal" (1967) and "Disobedience and Democracy" (1968). He had previously published "LaGuardia in Congress" (1959), which had won the American Historical Association's Albert J. Beveridge Prize; "SNCC: The New Abolitionists" (1964); "The Southern Mystique" (1964); and "New Deal Thought" (1966).
Dr. Zinn was also the author of "The Politics of History" (1970); "Postwar America" (1973); "Justice in Everyday Life" (1974); and "Declarations of Independence" (1990).

In 1988, Dr. Zinn took early retirement so as to concentrate on speaking and writing. The latter activity included writing for the stage. Dr. Zinn had two plays produced: "Emma," about the anarchist leader Emma Goldman, and "Daughter of Venus."

Dr. Zinn, or his writing, made a cameo appearance in the 1997 film "Good Will Hunting." The title characters, played by Matt Damon, lauds "A People's History" and urges Robin Williams's character to read it. Damon, who co-wrote the script, was a neighbor of the Zinns growing up.

Damon was later involved in a television version of the book, "The People Speak," which ran on the History Channel in 2009. Damon was the narrator of a 2004 biographical documentary, "Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train."

On his last day at BU, Dr. Zinn ended class 30 minutes early so he could join a picket line and urged the 500 students attending his lecture to come along. A hundred did so.

Dr. Zinn's wife died in 2008. He leaves a daughter, Myla Kabat-Zinn of Lexington; a son, Jeff of Wellfleet; three granddaugthers; and two grandsons.

Funeral plans were not available.

MISSING METALLICA FAN (MORGAN HARRINGTON) REMAINS POSITIVELY IDENITIFIED

EDITORS NOTE: The story of METALLICA fan and 20 year old VIRGINIA TECH student MORGAN HARRINGTON (from ROANOKE, VIRGINIA) has been a heartbreaking story for about three months now. MORGAN HARRINGTON attended a METALLICA show 10/17/09 in Charlottesville, Virginia and has not been seen since. Due to a no re-entry policy at the John Paul Jones Arena, MORGAN HARRINGTON was not allowed re entry after she some how ended up outside the venue after going to the bathroom. HARRINGTON had called her friends (inside the venue) to tell them not to worry about her and she would find an alternative ride home. MORGAN HARRINGTON has not been seen since as only her cell phone and purse were found on a bridge. Since then, METALLICA has donated over $50, 000 to help in efforts to find their missing fan as MORGAN HARRINGTON was wearing a PANTERA t-shirt at the concert. MORGAN was very close to her family and it is very uncharacteristic of her to disappear without letting friends and family know as she was planning on studying with her family the week of her disappearance.
Needless to say, always have alternative forms of transportation ( KNOW the number of often 24/7- taxi, bus, subway, train public transportation companies in that town) when going to any event, and look out for your friends, and always make your friends a priority before any event. NEVER under circumstances go home or get a ride from a stranger (even if the "stranger" was at the show), and if you DO get a ride home from a event, make sure the person is someone whom has a reference point in your local and regional community. If you are separated from your friends at an event, WAIT for them, do not get in car with an intoxicated driver, and don't drink and drive. Lastly, always carry ID,( and even after entry, your ticket stub or receipt for re entry into certain venues) in case you get hurt in the pit as these are new venue policies. If you're lost and stuck after a show, call up friends or family, or go to a church, or drop in center for help getting home.. Yeh, back in the day, you can always use a pay phone if you don't have a cell phone, pay phones in many suburban communities are almost obsolete now. Forensics and DNA testing may help to identify the human remains. All the best to the HARRINGTON family in their courageous search for their daughter, hopefully there will be some closure in all of this.
Very depressing news, and as METALLICA has said in one of their earlier releases "And Justice For All.."

UPDATE FROM CBS19:
Virginia State Police said in a press conference Tuesday evening that they are "fairly confident" the remains found at Anchorage Farm in southern Albemarle County are of Morgan Dana Harrington. However they will not confirm that the remains are Morgan Harrington.

Virginia State Police and Albemarle County Police are currently on the scene of the discovery of skeletal remains at Anchorage Farm in southern Albemarle County. State police were notified at 9:59 a.m. Tuesday morning by an Albemarle County resident of the discovery. Remains and scene are being evaluated by forensic technicians.

CBS19 reporter Jessica Jaglois has received word that Dan and Gil Harrington, parents of missing 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, were en route to Charlottesville around 1:00pm Tuesday afternoon.

Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother, told Jaglois by phone that the remains found "probably are Morgan's."

"We don't think it's been proved definitively yet, but it's most likely," she said. "So, we want to go and be on hand and see if that determination can be made. Or if we can help in making that determination."

Gil Harrington said she wanted to thank people for all their prayers and the efforts to find Morgan.

"I was hoping we would find her alive, but at least we won't always be wondering for a lifetime," she said.

"We're still kind of processing, trying to, although all this time, we've been trying to prepare ourselves for this endpoint," Harrington said. "But thinking you're doing it and having done it are different. So we're trying to figure to how to be a tripod now instead of a four-legged strong table that we have been [as a family]. We haven't done it. We'll figure it out, but we haven't done it yet."

CBS19's Bianca Spinosa spoke to David Bass, the owner of the property, on the phone. He said he found the remains when he was checking fences that keep cows from roaming. The fences were on the outer end of the property, about 1.5 miles from his own. Initially, Bass said, he thought the remains were a deer but called police when he realized they were human.

Bass said the remains were at a remote part of the property that can only be accessed by tractor. He said he usually keeps the gates to his farm open, which makes it susceptible to trespassers, usually hunters.

Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney Denise Lunsford and Lt. Joe Rader of the Virginia State Police both visited the crime scene Tuesday. Lt. Rader is the lead investigator in the Morgan Harrington disappearance case.

Virginia State Police have scheduled a press conference for 5:00pm Tuesday afternoon. CBS19 will have live coverage of the press conference on air and on Newsplex.com.

We will update the story as additional information is made available.

FROM ROANOKE TIMES.COM:

UPDATED: 6:04 p.m. |

Police say they are "fairly confident" that skeletal remains found on a Virginia farm are those of a Virginia Tech student who vanished after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville.

State Police Superintendent Steve Flaherty says an autopsy will be conducted to confirm that the remains are those of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared on Oct. 17. Investigators believe the body was Harrington's because of undisclosed items that were found with it, said Flaherty.

The 20-year-old Roanoke County woman became separated from friends after she left a concert arena and was denied re-entry.

The skeletal remains were found Tuesday morning by a farmer surveying his farm. The farm is about 10 miles from where Harrington attended the concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

Gil and Dan Harrington, Morgan Harrington's parents, had arrived at the Virginia State Police office in Albemarle County earlier.

David Bass is the owner of Anchorage Farm, the property where the body was found. Bass said he found the "seriously decomposed body" this morning at 8:30 a.m. in a part of his cow pasture that he rarely visits. He was checking the area this morning because of the recent heavy rains. Bass said authorities have asked him not to speak to the media.

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger released a statement following the news conference.

"For more than three months, the entire Virginia Tech community, along with thousands upon thousands around the world, has held out hope for the safe return of Morgan Harrington," he said. "Sadly, today’s news from Albemarle County has put an end to that hope, and once again, we find our strength and resilience tested in the face of profound grief and loss."

Nancy Agee, Carilion Clinic's chief operating officer, sent employees an e-mail earlier in the day when it became apparent the body was likely that of Harrington, but before police held a news conference. Harrington's father is Carilion Clinic's vice president for academic affairs.

"I know you have all felt some measure of the pain and burden that Dan and Gil have borne over the past three months," she wrote in the e-mail. "We pray that they can find some measure of closure and peace in the days to come."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
FROM BLABBERMOUTH.NET: WTKR.com reports that the parents of Morgan Harrington are en route to the Charlottesville area to identify the skeletal remains found in Albemarle County this morning.

An Albemarle County resident found the remains Tuesday morning at a private residence called Anchorage Farm on Anchorage Farm Road in the Southern part of Albemarle County.

The farm is ten miles away from the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville where 20-year-old Morgan Harrington was last seen at a METALLICA concert October 17.

When WTKR.com spoke to Dan Harrington, Morgan's father, he was in tears and said this is a horrible day for their family.

When we spoke to Dan Harrington, Morgan's Father, he was in tears, telling CBS 6 "this is a horrible day" for his family.

We also know that the lead investigator in the Harrington disappearance, Lt. Joe Rader, is on the scene.

CBS 6's Catie Beck spoke to David Dass, the man who discovered the remains on his property. Dass, a farmer and owner of Anchorage Farm, says after the wind and rain last week there were several downed trees in his yard. He was out looking for possible repairs in a remote area of his property, when he spotted the body.

He said the area would be next to impossible to access from a road, since it's at least a mile and a half from the roadway.

He said at first he didn't know whether the remains were human or animal, describing them as very badly decomposed.

Dass said, "I looked down and saw what looked like a human skull and my first thought was that it was Morgan Harrington." He says the skull had no hair on it and couldn't tell from looking at the remains whether it was a male or female.

He immediately went inside and called 911 and said, "I'm not even sure if this is a human body, but I think so."

He added, "We're a small, rural family and we've never had any trespassers. Now in dealing with this tragedy, of a dead person and at the same time [wondering] if this is Morgan Harrington, a part of me thinks this is something good for people to know."

Dass says police confirmed right away that it was a human body, but he has not received any additional information.

Virginia State Police have not confirmed the identity of the remains and will hold a news conference this evening at 5:00pm.

UPDATE: 1/27/2010:
FROM BLABERMOUTH.NET: WTVR.com reports that the state medical examiner has confirmed the remains found on an Albemarle County Farm Tuesday are those of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington, who was last seen at a METALLICA concert in October.

Virginia State Police say the confirmation was made using dental records provided by the family and say the investigation continues into the time and cause of death.

Meantime, Morgan Harrington's father talked to CBS 6 about the discovery of his daughter's remains and what the revelation means to his family.

NEW SKITLIV "BLOODLETTING" RELEASE 2/22/2010 DETAILS

Details of SKITLIV's new release entitled "BLOODLETTING" set to be unleashed 2/22/2010
via COLD SPRING CO.UK have ben released. SKITLIV features former MAYHEM vocalist MANIAC.
FROM SKITLIV MYSPACE:

With a date set for the 22nd February, details and artwork have been revealed for the upcoming SKITLIV picture disc to be released on Cold Spring Records. Titled “Bloodletting”, the three-track 10” disc features part of a painting by David Tibet on side A, whilst side B is illustrated by a painting by the Norwegian artist Munch. The disc is strictly limited to 777 copies and will not be reprinted again. The disc is available to pre-order at http://www.coldspring.co.uk/

Side A of “Bloodletting” features the track “Slow Pain Coming” (Cold Spring Mix) and opens with the intro “Who Will Deliver Us From Gold And Planets”, which is the piece of music usually used by SKITLIV as an introduction to live performances. “Who Will Deliver Us…” was created and recorded by David Tibet and Andrew Liles at the request of SKITILIV founder and front man Maniac, and is described as “an introductory collage destruct”. Side B of the disc contains the extremely hard to find demo version of the track “A Valley Below”.

Since his departure from the seminal Black Metal band MAYHEM, Maniac has expanded his horizons considerably, moving firmly away from the Black Metal genre with which he is so closely associated, to concentrate on his own bands, one of them being the Blackened Doom project SKITLIV. With a line up that includes SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth on guitars and backing vocals, and with guest appearances from musical luminaries such as David Tibet (CURRENT 93), Gaahl (GOD SEED, WARDRUNA) and Atilla (SUNN 0))), MAYHEM), SKITLIV recently released the critically acclaimed debut album “Skandinavisk Misantropi” on Season of Mist.

Continuing Cold Spring’s collaboration with Maniac, the UK label is shortly due to release the debut album from the legendary front man’s noise/darkwave/ambient project SEHNSUCHT, which he formed with fiancée Vivian Slaughter (GALLHAMMER) on bass, sax and backing vocals, experimentalist Andrew Liles (NURSE WITH WOUND, CURRENT 93) on FX, electronics and sound-design, and SKITLIV guitarist Ingvar Magnusson.

Maniac and Liles also recently got together with Czral (VIRUS, VED BUENS ENDE, AURA NOIR, DØDHEIMSGARD) to release an album that Maniac and Czral had begun working on in 1996. The 14-track album, “Det Skjedde Noe Når Du Var I Belgia” (Something Happened While You Were In Belgium) was released at the end of last year on the UK’s DIRTER label.

Family struggling to repatriate body of After Death musician Timothy Kennelly

The family of a "heroic" teenage musician who drowned trying to save his friend off the coast of Brazil have said they will struggle to pay the "huge" cost of bringing his body home.

After Death : Family struggling to repatriate body of After Death musician Timothy Kennelly
Timothy Kennelly, far left, died trying to save his bandmate Leon Villalba , 2nd left

Timothy Kennelly, 18, died last Thursday after diving into rough waters off the Brazilian coast of Atalia in a bid to save his drowning bandmate, Leon Villalba, 21. The pair, from London, were on a six-week tour with their heavy metal band, After Death.

Mr Kennelly's parents flew out to Brazil over the weekend, but have since discovered that they will have to pay the full cost of repatriating their son's body themselves because none of the band members had insurance.

He added: “Unfortunately none of them had any insurance so the families are going to have to spend a huge amount of money repatriating the bodies.

“Timothy's parents are going to find it hard to come up with the money. Rosemary is a retired teacher and Diarmuid worked as a fish monger but his business closed three years ago.”

Mr McLaughlin, 53, a consultant in the oil industry, said the remaining members of the band had returned to London and had visited both grieving families.

“They told us that they saw Timothy and Leon clinging together in the sea and then they were just gone. Timothy is not a good swimmer but he still did everything he could to try and help his friend. We are all so proud of him. He is a hero,” he said.

Witnesses said Mr Kennelly — a gap year student who was planning to study physics at the University of York — rushed into the water to rescue Mr Villalba after he began struggling in rough waves.

Lifeguards pulled Mr Villalba out of the water after being alerted by a fellow bather, but he was dead by the time they reached the shore. Mr Kennelly's body was found the next day, washed up on a beach 15 miles away.

The band was only a week into their tour as a support act for the heavy metal band Master when the tragedy occurred.

Mr Kennelly, from Ealing, had joined the group six months ago after leaving Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in Shepherd's Bush.

Barry O'Connor, the band's drummer, described Mr Kennelly as a "great guy all round".

"Tim straight away made a massive impression ... he was full of information, loved a laugh and was on cloud nine," the 22-year-old said.

Mr Villalba, from Islington, was a former pupil of St Aloysius RC College.

IN THE HEART OF WINTER FEST: 1/29 and 30th, 2010, RICHMOND, VA

Promoters have announced the HEART OF WINTER 2 FEST set to take place January 29th and 30th, 2010 @ at Alley Katz, 10 Walnut Alley, Richmond, Virginia 23228. (*KRIEG canceled BTW)
FROM NOISECREEP:
The lineup and running order for the second annual Heart of Winter Fest has recently been released by the festival's creators, Drew and Elway of Richmond, Va.-based black metal destroyers Bastard Sapling.

Elway took a few moments out of his hectic schedule to give Noisecreep the lowdown on what is rapidly becoming one of the most vital and interesting DIY metal events on the East Coast. With the way things are going, Heart of Winter has the potential to become something even greater than it already is. After all, the mighty Maryland Death Fest started out on just as small of a scale.

"Heart of Winter Fest is a DIY metal fest in Richmond, Va. with an emphasis on black, death, doom and punk metal. This will be the second (almost) annual Heart of Winter Fest, with the inaugural one taking place in December of 2008," he wrote from a hotel room at an undisclosed location out West, where he was catching a few Z's before returning to his place of work's annual convention the next day. Even underground black metallers have to attend company functions sometimes, and Elway's white-collar day job masks his pitch-black nocturnal activities quite well.

Booking a one-off bar show is enough of a pain; imagine the headaches, heartaches and wallet-aches that come with plotting a two-day, multi-band festival. What -- besides Satan, of course -- could have possibly possessed these two young men to undertake a task of such Herculean proportions?

Elway writes, simply, "Our inspiration has derived from ourselves and others. We feel and identify our thoughts and emotions. We create through music and other forms of expression. Through this and other factors included, but not limited to, friendships created while living in Richmond with people in and beyond Richmond, we have an outlet in which to create this event. And, we like to party!"

Heart of Winter II will be taking place in Richmond, Va. on Jan. 29 and 30.

OM are a stoner/drone duo from the Bay area, California- USA (formed in 2003) invoking meditative drone, with psychedelic, shoe gazer/post rock textures. OM features (EX) SLEEP and SHRINEBUILDER member Al Cisneros (bass/vocals) and Emil Amos (drums).
OM, lost a member when (EX) SLEEP, SHRINEBUILDER member Chris Hakius (drums) left the project in 2008 to be replaced by Emil Amos (GRAILS). You may heard of the seminal stoner doom band SLEEP as the bands founder, MATT PIKE went on to form HIGH ON FIRE. OM is an organic extension of SLEEP, reuniting the bands rhythm section, invoking a stripped down meditative drone.
In the transition of OM's lineup changes, the band has returned to form to create yet another engaging sonic art of mystical, transcendent stoner/drone.
OM's "GOD IS GOOD" kicks off with the 19:08 opus "Thebes" crawling in with a tambura (sounds like a sitar) melody, and slow, menacing bass as with subtle variations, the bass and tambura meld together to form a middle eastern flavored, relaxing drone. At 3:25 into "Thebes", Al Cisneros vocals seep in emoting an Indian chanted mantra with subtle light percussion, and violin inspiring a psychedelic atmosphere. "Thebes" builds on it's psychedelic textures with drums and light keyboards. "Thebes" meditative trance takes a turn for the heavier (8:28) as distorted bass catches a groove with Cisneros's smooth vocals invoking psychedelic atmospheres. Mmmmm. "Thebes" enters other worldly territories as at 14:58 the opus slows down for a stoner doomer's wet dream of melancholy, psychedelic/groove bliss.
By now, you should NOT be sober, and in meditative trance. OM's "Meditation is the Practice of Death" seeps in with an ominous bass intro and Cisneros's
seductive vocals. At 5:23 into "Meditation is the Practice of Death", OM employ the use of a flute solo, beautiful indeed. . "Cremation Ghat I", enters in at a quicker pace, rim taping, fast bass groove, hand claps and pretentious, Tibetan chants as "Cremation Ghat I" segues into the next track "Cremation Ghat II". OM's "GOD IS GOD" closes with the instrumental "Cremation Ghat II", softly segueing with a droning, hypnotic tambura as Amos crawls in with rim tapping, keeping perfect time."Cremation Ghat II" invokes a rock groove (1:48) with lightly sprinkled mellotron and tablas jamming into a void, as this unstructured track feels incomplete.
OM's "GOD IS GOOD" trades Al Cisneros dominant, droning bass for a lighter, more hypnotic journey. However, this concept would be more effective if the songwriting and excursions were stronger and more meaningful.
Gone is Cisneros's distorted bass, for a cleaner, low in the mix, groove oriented feel as Amos brings a more jazzier flavor to OM's arsenal.
I do love the variation of instrumentation featured on OM's "GOD IS GOOD" as this band will try anything once, flutes, tambora, tablas, ect, all of which add to a wondrous journey into psychedelic, oblivion.
However, while OM's "GOD IS GOOD" isn't the classic "Pilgrimage" has grown into, OM are
certainly one of the most original stoner/drone bands out there today, invoking a psychedelic trance transcending over the gluttony of Black Sabbath clones littering the stoner/doom scene. . OM are indeed recommended for those looking for a meditative, spiritual journey and a hypnotic, cathartic ritual from the worlds baggage.
