In layman's terms, U2 (like WU TANG CLAN) licensed the bands music out for a considerable sum of money (100 million to U2 and UNIVERSAL, blanket royalty ), as the band is already paid and recouped and have offered (or FORCED) it to the world for FREE.
The catch: U2's "Songs Of Innocence" is automatically added to everyones I TUNES and IOS library, as perhaps the vast majority find this marketing tactic infuriating.
Still trying to find a way to DELETE this mediocre U2 release? Millions are infuriated with the U2's musical spam. .
Perhaps APPLE can license out and re-issue (FOR FREE) U2's classic releases "War", October" and "Unforgettable Fire" instead, higher quality music indeed.
As perhaps "Force Feeding" or "spamming" internet users FREE MUSIC may become a new marketing tactic.
ITP V.014 EDITORS NOTE: Unlike BUCKCHERRY, I'm NOT against the licensing deal , and I'm very pro licensing music out (anyone including unsigned bands can benefit of of licensing deals, it's great exposure, all bands do this regarding re-issues and vinyl releases ),regards the artist freedom, and perhaps copyright control and the fans get FREE music, can't beat that.. Anyone who is against a licensing deal is sucking up to a label who owns their copyright, a poor outdated business model, and no worries about illegal downloading, the fans get the music for FREE, and the industry and artist get their piece of the pie.
Rock stars like U2, NINE INCH NAILS and RADIOHEAD get the benefit of the doubt over indie artists, as there is some room for smaller profit to sell your music in licensing, even on indies.
However, I'm against the marketing technique of "force feeding" or spamming even FREE MUSIC on to internet devices, digital music and mp3's take up A LOT of space and memory. Kinda scary, eeeps.

FROM PATRICIA THOMAS: This is very interesting, particularly the comment about how it affects new bands. And as someone said, U2 didn't actually give away the album for free, they licensed it to Apple, and as such probably made more money than if they had sold it through normal channels. And I particularly like this comment "Dumping an album in hundreds of millions of iTunes libraries whether people want it or not, reduces music to the level of a software update or a bug-fix or just plain spam" (This article refers to the UK market).

U2 you are business moguls not musicians anymore. No wonder you have to give your mediocre music away for free cause no one wants to buy it.
