A TNS consumer research survey, conducted via seven large markets states 68% surveyed preferred new release dates FRIDAY OR SATURDAYS.

ITP V.015 EDITORS NOTE: Funny, maybe I'm getting old, I remember back in the 80's and 90's waiting on line at record stores for physical releases as a first day buyer, those days are long gone. If, (as what I perceive the agenda of FRIDAY releases) can be consolidated as a ONE DATE release GLOBALLY, that what be cool. Considering this ideal, and multiple distributors for releases (outside of the nation or continent of indie artist records labels and international time zone differentials) provoke multiple release dates, this seems like a "cold day in hell" pipedream vs. contracted distribution deals. Or maybe the industry has worked it out and all will conform.
Not a bad idea to have ONE release date internationally, NORTH AMERICA can't envy EUROPEAN UNION for releases (first day buyers) and less of a motive for those to download illegally, pay expensive import prices or pay on E-BAY.
Also consider pre-order as that concept is far more important
(financially) to both labels and bands, as marketing and promotional
campaigns are structured around it.
CONSIDER and WORK WITH MUSIC AND METAL MEDIA:
While I think the above survey is primarily consumer opinion oriented,
and consider an 8 week advance promotional/marketing campaign for
releases, FRIDAY releases shouldn't inconvenience the music media (internet), we'll be involved..
However, SATURDAY's, depending on time zone differentials may be pushing
it.
Otherwise, for us in the metal/music media, FRIDAY is "media dump day". If music release dates are on FRIDAY, this means we'll be swamped with lots of press releases (as we are on MONDAYS), exclusives, music and goodies to kick off a weekend, plus a previous 8 week promotional/,marketing campaign.
I assume, this survey (primary consumer) did not consider (nor take into account) the metal/music media is off (slow) for weekends (SATURDAY and SUNDAYS-unless a musician has a quotable, interviews, reviews or something awful or controversial happens on a weekend tour date).
FRIDAY music releases are an interesting concept, and frankly hilarious as the music industry is desperate and on its knees competing for consumer FRIDAY paychecks.
Otherwise, ONE release date, (MONDAY through FRIDAY, doesn't matter to me) will take one or two minutes off of every journal entry ITP writes as opposed to multiple release dates, ugh.
Also, (this is often a PR, MEDIA and fan nightmare) one global release date means lyric videos, and music videos can be viewed internationally on that specific date avoiding DMCA's, often (not factoring in almost mandatory music media exclusives) confusing regarding multiple distributors and multiple release dates.
It's best for the music industry to keep multiple release dates within one day of each other (M-TU-W OR TU-W-TH OR W-TH-F).
RECORD STORE DAY, BLACK FRIDAY, (consolidated with SPRING, SUMMER FESTIVAL, and EARLY FALL touring cycle) and early JANUARY though early NOVEMBER are relevant marketing and release dates.
REMEMBER, FRIDAY will be SATURDAY in AUSTRALIA, ASIA (CHINA), ARAB EMIRATES, INDIA, EGYPT and AFRICA. A 20- 24 hour time zone differential from, EST USA, I know, I'm a lone writer, and time zones are important.
