FROM MORTAL DECAY:
So, some of you may have noticed that one of the most, if not THE MOST, important DM records of all time has just crossed the 20 year anniversary mark. Mortal Decay had already existed for about four years, and I was in the band for almost a year at this point and I remember going to Tower Records with the guys, and a bunch of friends outside of the band, and we were excited to hear what they had come up with. We knew we loved Effigy, and the production on Breeding wasn't what it could've been, so we were anxious to see what was contained on that piece of plastic that we had all purchased.
Little did we know that it would change the way we thought about what
we did, and how we did it, and also how most other bands did it! We
didn't stop listening to this record at all for the first couple of
months after it's release, and still rely on it's innovation even now!
Sure, there were albums and bands for which we found influence. But
nothing connected, at least for me, like the riffs, the sound, the
atmosphere, the production, the interplay between the musicians, and
those vocals that seem to cut through everything like an axe thru the
stacked up bodies that they'd left after the first two records.
We played a show with them in November of '94 and they played a bunch of the songs that would end up on the record. While I'm not sure at which point they let Mike Smith go and recruited Doug Bohn, we were all shocked at how Bones handled it in such short time, ripping thru old stuff and then crushing these new songs that very few of us outside their inner circle had heard. I remember looking around the audience and literally noticing dropped jaws!! It was unbelievable to think that this might be a real turning point in what we were all doing at that time, but it was, and still has enough essence to draw in even the most jaded of fans of the scene they almost single handedly created.
So, for those of you that have avoided this record over the years, whether by choice or by accident, I think 20 years is long enough of a wait. Do yourselves a favor, and check it out, and celebrate with us this game changing effort by a band that is obviously still vital to this day, and who's influence will be forever felt in our scene!!
