ITP V.017 EDITORS NOTE: While very painful for the surviving family of the 1989 HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM DEATHS, hopefully there will be some JUSTICE in this nearly 30 year old case as a new generation will understand crowd, event and public safety.
All the best to the survivors and the families of the 1989 HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM DEATHS, hoping for closure and justice.
Since the 1989 HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM DEATHS all football matches are seated, as the 1989 HILLSBOROUGH STADIUM tragedy was provoked by over capacity.

FROM SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE:
NEWS: Chief Constable responds to Hillsborough charging announcement
The Crown Prosecution Service has today announced that charges have been authorized against six people in relation to the Hillsborough Disaster.
Chief Constable Stephen Watson said: “Decisions concerning the bringing of criminal charges are rightly for the CPS. Given that criminal proceedings are now active, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further for fear of jeopardising this important process in any way. In all of this however, our thoughts are with the Hillsborough families as we reflect on the appalling tragedy that is Hillsborough with the loss of so many innocent lives”.

FROM TREVOR HICKS (PRESIDENT OF HILLSBOROUGH FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP):

Trevor Hicks, president of the Hillsborough Families Support Group whose teenage daughters Sarah and Vicki were killed, said the news was a vital step forward.
“If I’m honest I didn’t think we would get to this day, no,” he said. “We didn’t think we would. This is a success for society at large. There are no winners but it sends a message out that nobody is above the law. After Grenfell Tower and others, the message is ‘watch out, families will come after you.’”
Margaret Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James was killed, said she felt the families had turned a corner. “The message this sends is ‘never give up. Carry on fighting’. This should never happen again. No one should go through this to get to the truth. That’s the legacy of this.”

[The Hillsborough disaster was a human crush at a Sheffield football stadium in a 1989 cup semi-final game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, resulting in 96 dead and 766 injured, making this the worst disaster in British sporting history. The crush occurred in the two standing-only central pens allocated to Liverpool supporters. Shortly before kick-off, in an attempt to ease overcrowding at the entrance, the police match commander ordered an exit gate to be opened, letting in even more supporters.
Police then fed false stories to the press suggesting that hooliganism and drinking by Liverpool supporters were the root causes of the disaster. Blaming of Liverpool fans persisted even after a 1990 report found that the main cause of the disaster was a failure of control by South Yorkshire Police. The director of public prosecutions ruled that there was no evidence to justify prosecution of individuals or institutions and a 1991 coroner's inquest decided that all the deaths were accidental. A judge ruled in 1997 that there were no grounds for reopening the inquiry. The families brought private prosecutions in 2000 which failed.
A Hillsborough Independent Panel, convened in 2009, reported further criticisms of the police in 2012, leading to criminal investigations led by the police.
A second coroner's inquest in 2014 ruled that the supporters were unlawfully killed due to grossly negligent failures by police and ambulance services to fulfill their duty of care to them and exonerated the supporters from any blame. Today, almost three decades after the disaster, six people were charged with offences ranging from manslaughter by gross negligence to misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice.]
