FROM PAUL MASVIDAL (VOCALS GUITARS CYNIC)
I learned today that Sean Malone has died. I am numb and grief stricken. He had a brilliant mind, a gracious heart and was one of the greatest musicians I’ve ever encountered. I know that this is a shocking loss for so many fans whose lives he touched with his artistry, as it is for me. Please keep him in your thoughts and listen to his playing to celebrate his life.
FROM SEASON OF MIST:
Woke up this morning to the sad and shocking news of the passing of
Cynic's
Sean Malone. You'll see an outpouring of discussion about how great and influential his playing was, and each word of it will be true and deserved.
We'll cherish and celebrate Sean's monster talents for certain, but we'll also remember him as man of tremendous character. A man of great integrity with a deep intelligence, soft-spoken sincerity and profound loyalty to his family and friends.
We were all blessed to have him touch our lives.
Rest easy Sean.
FROM HEAVY NEW YORK:
RIP to a true legend. Sean Malone!!! Lets blast Cynic all day today \m/
FROM REDEFINING DARKNESS RECORDS:
Today
is a sad one. Being an aspiring musician, I grew up loving Cynic’s
‘Focus’ in my youth and I was so excited when ‘Traced in Air’ came out
15 or so years later. I remember touring with Abigail Williams
in 2008 and obsessively listening to that album. I followed Sean with
his Gordian Knot project and always loved his musical voice. The world
has lost a true giant WAY too early.
FROM SCHISMATIC:
R.I.P. Sean Malone:(

FROM STEVE DI GIORGIO (BASSIST- DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, SADUS):
Saddened
by the death of a bass brother. Without any hyperbole; a true legend.
Sean Malone is basically responsible for an entire genre of metal bass
playing. Very influential and definitively ahead of the rest of us. I
met Sean during the recording of Individual Thought Patterns in Tampa FL
early 1993, as he was Scott Burns' assistant. And yes, I'll take credit
for getting him hooked up in Cynic. But to have someone so immensely
talented flood me with compliments during the humbling and exposing
process of tracking in the studio...it just pumped me up. And we went on
to keep in touch and share music discoveries and amazing bass players.
You didn't need to feel unworthy in his presence because he was a
teacher and a motivator. A big part of my journey, a colleague and a
fretless bassbro. Death is a natural part of life, but depression is a
disease.
FROM SEAN REINERT ESTATE (DRUMMER CYNIC): :
Sean and Sean on the plane returning from Japan, 2015. Malone stayed with Sean and me for a couple weeks prior to that tour. Between rhythm section rehearsals at our home we shared many laughs, discussions about music and good food. There’s no doubt a special bond between a drummer and bass player. I’m obviously biased, but I don’t know if there’s been a tastier rhythm section than the two Seans. The loss of Malone is a huge blow to the music world. I wish kindness and compassion to his family, friends and fans during this difficult time.
Thanks-Stay Metal, Stay Brutal-R.I.P. \m/ -l-
