Formed in 1985, Liverpool, England Gore-grind pioneers CARCASS have set
the standard, founded the grind/core genre AND melodic death metal genre
("HEART WORK" release) complete with more medical references than a
medical examiners notebook.
In the second half of the 80's, CARCASS guitarist BILL STEER joined
grind core pioneers NAPALM DEATH, designing the cover art for the bands
pioneering release "Scum".
During the early 90's, MICHAEL AMOTT joined CARCASS on lead guitar,
later co-founding Swedish melodic death metal warriors ARCH ENEMY (with
his brother).
Despite record label pressure for streamlined songwriting and cleaner
vocals, in 1993, CARCASS inked a record deal with COLUMBIA RECORDS and
recorded the bands melodic masterpiece
"Heart Work".
CARCASS collaborated with alternative rock songstress BJORK for a
re-recording of "Isobel" later featured on BJORK's 1996 "Hyperballad"
single.
With increasing record label pressures from SONY/COLUMBIA and returning
to EARACHE RECORDS, CARCASS disbanded in 1996 after a delayed release of
"Swansong".
In the time span of CARCASS in-activity, ARCH ENEMY was formed via
former CARCASS axe slinger MICHAEL AMOTT as plenty of bands found
influence in the CARCASS catalog spawning many clone bands and the
gore/grind, grind-core, melo-death metal sub genres.
In 2007, CARCASS re-activated, ready to re-reclaim the extreme metal
throne from generic, cookie cutter clones and the music industry that
nearly destroyed them. Within a few high profile re-union shows via
extreme metal festivals, CARCASS announced a new record deal (NUCLEAR
BLAST), DANIEL WILDING (drums) and BEN ASH (guitar), and the bands first
release in 18 years. Within the news of the CARCASS re-union and
pending studio release, the extreme metal underground cheered and
shuddered with excitement.
This brings us to 2021. After a quality 2013 come back release ("SURGICAL STEEL" ), a few stand alone singles and a SPLIT, CARCASS return with a new release "TORN ARTERIES".
CARCASS'S "TORN ARTERIES" kicks off with the title track as it enters hard, heavy and fast. Punk beats hold down a tight rhythm section with JEFF WALKER'S death rasps. At 3:98 seconds, "TORN ARTERIES" takes off with gravity blast beats at a breakneck pace. "TORN ARTERIES" features some awesome technical guitar work and solos.
CARCASS'S "DANCE OF IXTAB (PSYCHOPOMB AND CIRCUMSTANCE, MARCH NO. 1 IN B") evokes a death and roll feel with some technical guitar work. "DANCE OF IXTAB" features some good melodic guitar solos for an accessible, bluesy rocker of a track.
CARCASS'S "ELEANOR RIGOR MORTIS" is a rager right from the start. A few seconds later the track slows to mid pace with excellent, melodic guitar solos. At 3:51 into "ELEANOR RIGOR MORTIS ends with fast paced extreme metal heaviness.
CARCASS'S "UNDER THE SCALPEL BLADE" was a stand alone single unleashed in 2014 via DECIBEL. "UNDER THE SCALPEL BLADE" features a sludgy attack as it's main riff with melodic thrash riffs and blast beats thrown in for diversity. at 2:55 "UNDER THE SCALPEL BLADE" features standard death metal riffing.
. CARCASS'S "THE DEVIL RIDES OUT", features an excellent chugging main riff segueing into awesome melodic guitar riffs and solos. At 2:54 "THE DEVIL RIDES OUT" morphs into melodic guitar bliss with beautiful riffs galore.
CARCASS'S "FLESH RIPPING SONIC TORMENT LIMITED" enters with a beautiful acoustic intro seguing into some sick riffing. BILL STEER'S guitar work is outstanding as "FLESH RIPPING SONIC TORMENT LIMITED" flourishes into a sludgy break down before segueing into a chant along chorus. At six and half minutes "FLESH RIPPING SONIC TORMENT LIMITED" morphs into a bluesy solo before picking up the pace for some heavy death and roll.
. CARCASS'S "KELLY'S MEAT EMPORIUM" kicks your teeth in for a fast, heavy rager of a track. Thrash riffs adorn "KELLY'S MEAT EMPORIUM" with blast beats and a good quality melodic riff dancing through out the track.
CARCASS'S "IN GOD WE TRUST" features some tight, hard driving riffs, a good guitar solos..This is some good death grind indeed.
CARCASS'S "WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CARCASS/CAVEAT EMPTOR" is a good death and roll track with a cauldron full of excellent riffs. "Rotten to the Core"!
CARCASS'S "TORN ARTERIES" closes with "THE SCYTHE'S REMORSELESS SWING" as the track speeds up with a hardcore beat and some melodic riffs. "THE SCYTHE'S REMORSELESS SWING" amalgamates thrash with melodic death and roll as the track is well written and executed. "They say you have all the time in the world, but the word doesn't belong to you." .
. CARCASS'S "TORN ARTERIES" is a mixture of "HEARTWORK" and "NECROTICISM" leaning towards more mid paced death and roll. CARCASS'S stab at a master piece, the over 9 minute "FLESH RIPPING SONIC TORMENT LIMITED" falls short into redundancy.
While "WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CARCASS/CAVEAT EMPTOR", ."THE SCYTHE'S REMORSELESS SWING" and the title track are the bands most diverse, tightest and heaviest tracks.
Perhaps the mid paced tracks may be more accessible to new CARCASS fans. However while the musicianship is out standing some tracks are just groovy death and roll. However, mid paced death and roll isn't a bad thing as with surgical precision, it is well executed. . .
Perhaps the songwriting featured on "TORN ARTERIES" is just a wee bit lacking as half the album has an 90's hard rock/metal feel.Half or 40% of .CARCASS'S "TORN ARTERIES" is death grind, the rest is death and roll.
In all, CARCASS'S."TORN ARTERIES" has it's moments and a little too much fat hardening those arteries. However, CARCASS'S meat is still good and tasty...
