Good news? It's GREAT news!
FROM MARA LEVERITT:
The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled today that Damien Echols is entitled to have evidence from the murders of Christopher Byers, Michael Moore and Steve Branch retested using new DNA technology. This welcome but belated ruling applies the "plain language" of Arkansas law to this long-running, historic case. Echols particularly wants new tests performed on the ligatures that were used to bind the children. While DNA tests performed after he, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. were convicted of the crimes found none of their DNA on the knots, the tests did find DNA from two other men who knew the victims. Whether new tests add to that information or not, the fact will remain that the DNA found in those tests stands as the strongest physical evidence yet in a case built entirely on circumstantial evidence. https://opinions.arcourts.gov/ark/supremecourt/en/item/522720/index.do
FROM AP NEWS:
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday said a judge wrongly denied a request for new genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the killing of three boys nearly 30 years ago.
In a 4-3 decision, the court reversed the 2022 ruling denying the request to test evidence from the 1993 crime scene where three 8-year-old boys were found brutally slain in a drainage ditch near West Memphis. The additional testing was sought by Damien Echols, one of the three men convicted in the slayings.
