#OTD in 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced to the last remaining enslaved Black people that they were free.

This day became known as Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S.

We continue our commitment to refusing the white supremacist systems that enslaved millions of Black people and honor those lives lost but not forgotten. Today
