As reported in the January 2010 issue of Sick Drummer Magazine, which features a cover story on iconic death metal drummer Dave Culross, New York's Pyrexia have inked a deal with Metal Blade Records to release their upcoming full-length "The Harvest."

Well-known to be the godfathers of the New York Death Metal (NYDM) scene from which generations of brutal east coast extreme bands have taken influence, "The Harvest" will be Pyrexia's first since releasing "Age Of The Wicked" on Unique Leader in 2007, which combined tracks from a number of different recording sessions featuring new vocalist Eric Schulte.

"The Harvest" is shaping up to be Pyrexia's first proper full-length since the monumental and now out-of-print "System Of The Animal" was released in 1997 on defunct label Serious Entertainment. Dave Culross discusses his joining forces with Pyrexia in Sick Drummer Magazine's latest issue:

"Pyrexia is the next project I’m working on. I am kind of full-time with it, because we are playing the Houten Deathfest in Holland in May 2010. I never play live shows with bands I do studio work for, which makes this different. The latest news is it will be released through Metal Blade Records. I am slated to do ten songs, two of which I have pretty much down, the third is in the works. Pyrexia has been Chris Basile’s brain-child over all the years. It was cool to see he was still pushing to do another record. With the addition of Eric Shulte singing a few years back, it helped Chris get some young drive behind him, and it kept him going. Now, we will be recording “The Harvest,” which should be a landmark in Chris and Pyrexia’s career. It is one of his most ambitious recordings to date. He is trying to do something that will make this record stand out from the others. There will be additional stuff, other than music, on the CD. I don’t want to go into details, but when it’s done, it should be some cool shit. The artwork for the cover is killer, as well."

In addition to having toured for over 15 years in the extreme metal scene, Dave Culross wrote and performed on Malevolent Creation's finest albums, notably "Eternal" (1995), "The Fine Art Of Murder" (1999), "Envenomed" (2001), "Warkult" (2004), and the band's latest, "Doomsday X" (2007) which saw Slipknot guitarist Mick Thompson provide a guest solo. Culross was also part of Florida grindcore outfit Hateplow for years, having replaced "Crazy" Larry Hawke who passed away in 1997, and with whom he recorded "The Only Law Is Survival" (2000) and "Moshpit Murder" (2004) recorded live from their tour with S.O.D. in reference. Sadly, there have been some church desecration's in Malaysia as the first article blames "black metal". Of course that "Inner Circle of Norwegian second wave black metal" (whatever one my think of them and their pathetic scene rivalries ) self destructed a long time ago, Varg Vikernes (BURZUM) is on parole preparing to release new material and has long grown out of his youthful criminal mischief, so why blame or even reference black metal? Nor does ITP condone such actions of church desecration.
ITP editor is not passing judgment nor taking sides in our objectivity, as these unlawful acts of church desecration seem to be the inner domestic turmoil of religious descent and repression in MALAYSIA. Blaming or even referencing "black metal" for the recent church desecration's in MALAYSIA is the equivalent of blaming MARIYLN MANSON and KMFDM for the Columbine High School tragic massacre.

JAN 9 — In the early 1990s, during the height of the second wave of the black metal scene in Norway, several churches were burned by a group who claimed to be Satanists and were members of the Norwegian Black Metal Inner Circle. Several notorious black metal musicians such as Varg Vikernes a.k.a Count Grishnackh, Samoth and Faust, among others, were said to be responsible for the attacks. The motive for those attacks was for a publicity stunt though they claimed that it was committed in the name of their faith.

So after my solat Jumaat (that means Friday prayers) yesterday, I was told that several churches in Kuala Lumpur were burned. The first thing that came to my mind is the church-burning incidents in Norway. Have the Norwegians come to our shore to spread their brand of black metal to the metalheads (for the record yours truly is a metal fan) in Malaysia? Was Varg Vikernes in Kuala Lumpur the previous night? That is not quite likely to happen because the last I heard about him was that though he was just released from prison, he is still on parole for the murder of a fellow black metal musician, infamously known as Euronymous. Anyway, he is too occupied in Norway spreading his ultra-right-wing philosophies there, so why would he be bothered about Malaysia when we have our own ultra-right-wing advocates?

So if the Norwegian black metal horde was not in Kuala Lumpur to set the churches on fire, then who did? And what would be the motive for such despicable acts?

It is hard not to link the incident with the recent ruling by the High Court over the usage of the name “Allah”. As reported in the media, several Muslim groups and Muslims are furious over the High Court’s decision. Therefore, it is not unlikely that there may be some ultra-right-wing religious extremists within this dissatisfied group who may have resorted to such methods. The existence of these “Ultramen” (not to be confused with the Japanese comic characters, “Ultra brothers”) is not something new. Given the fact that we have policies that segregate the Malaysians either “directly or indirectly”, it is just a matter of time before these “Ultramen” will rear their ugly heads in such a despicable manner.

As for motive, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist or even Sherlock Holmes, because even our ministers (who are world renowned for some of the most stupid and offensive statements in the history of mankind) can figure it out. It is obvious that the intention of those perpetrators is to spread terror and instil fear among Malaysians especially the non-Muslims. After all, terror and fear are effective tools to either perpetuate one’s propaganda or to suppress rights and/or freedom of individuals. This is especially true when the individuals do not have the intellect and capability to engage in any intellectual discourse over the “Allah” issue. To these misguided individuals, the church attacks are effective methods to scare the non-Muslims from using the name “Allah” and at the same time, protect the Muslim “ummah” from being confused. Well, these “Ultramen” definitely do not represent or speak on my behalf or the other Muslims who truly believe in the teachings of Islam.

While those who are displeased with the High Court’s decision have every right to voice out and express their dissatisfaction through legitimate means such as peaceful rallies and demonstration (even though there is no permit issued by the police for such rallies and demonstrations pursuant to section 27(5) of the Police Act 1984), under no circumstances can the burning of places of worship be considered as a legitimate way of expressing one’s view or opinion.

Furthermore, the clandestine manner in which the attacks were carried out and the fact that no one has claimed responsibility over such attacks clearly shows the cowardice of the perpetrators. If the perpetrators feel that what they did is in the name of God and religion, or is a form of jihad, then why don’t they come out and claim responsibility? Don’t be cowards who “lontar batu dan sembunyikan tangan”.

Violent actions by these irresponsible cowards would not solve anything. Instead it will sully and smear the good name of Islam, of Muslims and further widen the misconception that others may have about Islam. Lest we forget hate begets hate. Violence begets violence. By scaring the non-Muslims, they will only instil hatred and misunderstanding among Malaysians. Today it may be the churches, but what’s stopping the temples or other places of worship from being the next targets?

As such, as a Malaysian and a Muslim, I implore upon all perpetrators (and would-be perpetrators, if any) not to resort to stupid acts that will portray Islam in a negative manner. Whatever dissatisfaction that you may have over the “Allah” issue, violence is definitely not the answer.

As it is Muslims in the West are facing negative stigma due the acts of certain irresponsible individuals who promote violence in the name of Islam. Let’s not give legitimacy to such misconception about Islam. Just because Muslims are the majority in this country that doesn’t mean we can ignore and dismiss the rights of the minority. Otherwise we are no different from the bigots in the West who discriminate the minority Muslims in their respective countries.

As for the investigation into the church burnings, let’s hope that our police force has the intelligence to investigate such a “complex” and “sensitive” case (the phrase which is oft-quoted by our leaders and politicians). If the case is too sensitive and too hot to be handled by our police force, then perhaps we should seek the aid of Sherlock Holmes. After all, he is still in town (at the cinema at least) and even though he is fiction, he is more likely to do a better job than our own police, who are our own national fiction.

Miri church attack makes it seven

Police have cordoned off Taiping’s historic All Saints’ Church, target of an unsuccessful arson attack.

RAWANG, Jan 10 – A stone was thrown against a church in Miri today, making it the seventh attack in three days that is linked to the “Allah” ruling which has provoked Muslim anger. Earlier reports of an arson attack proved to be unfounded.

This is the first reported attack in East Malaysia where a large part of the population are Christians who worship in Bahasa Malaysia and also the ruling Barisan Nasional’s “fixed deposit” of votes and parliamentary seats in Election 2008.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein confirmed the attempt but insisted the situation in the country is under control.

“The situation is under control and the people should not be worried. They should not be influenced by internet reports or text messages,” he told reporters at an Umno event here.

Four churches in the Klang Valley were hit by petrol bombs on Friday while one was hit last night in Taiping. A Malacca church reported it was splashed with black paint while a priest in Penang had his car splashed with red paint.

A convent school in Taiping was also the target of an attempt with petrol bombs found near its guardhouse overnight. Church authorities believe it was meant for the St Louis Church next door.

Hishammuddin reminded the people not to be influenced by foreign and internet media reports as these could be inaccurate and project the country as unstable.

He said the ministry would brief foreign envoys on the actual situation

“We have to brief the international community as we have our citizens out there who want to know the actual situation which has been played up by certain quarters, including what is taken from the Internet,” he said.

Hishammuddin said the government will give an accurate picture of what has happened in the spate of church attacks.

SLAYER CANCELS AMERICAN AND CANADIAN CARNAGE TOUR DATES

California thrash legends SLAYER have canceled the bands aforementioned AMERICAN and
CANADIAN tour due to bassist/vocalist TOM ARAYA's back injury. Both SLAYER and MEGADETH have promised to reschedule all dates. MEGADETH will announce a spring 2010 headlining tour very soon.

California thrash metal legends SLAYER have been forced to cancel all of their immediate tour plans — including the American and Canadian Carnage tour dates with MEGADETH and TESTAMENT that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's European headline tour scheduled for March and April.

SLAYER bassist/vocalist Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a cervical radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms.

"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said SLAYER's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."

The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.

Booking agents for both SLAYER and MEGADETH are already hard at work rescheduling tour dates; tickets already purchased for all shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.

Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people — the MEGADETH and TESTAMENT camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans — Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."
FROM MEGADETH: The much-anticipated American Carnage tour, featuring thrash metal behemoths MEGADETH, SLAYER and TESTAMENT, has been put on hold due to health issues. SLAYER's bassist/vocalist Tom Araya is in need of back surgery which cannot be postponed.

While disappointed by the tour's delay, MEGADETH "is concerned for Araya and wish[es] him a speedy recovery," according to a statement released by the band's record label, Roadrunner Records.

MEGADETH is currently scheduling a U.S. headline run for March and April, and hopes to reschedule the American Carnage tour for this summer.

Anyone who has purchased an American Carnage ticket should hold on to it until further notice.

RIP DR. MARGARET WADE LEWIS (SUNY NEW PALTZ, NY BLACK STUDIES COLLEGE PROFESSOR)

http://www.newpaltz.edu/blackstudies/wadelewis.html (EDITORS NOTE:) This has been an awful week for deaths locally for the "old school bunch" who have spent over 20 years in the Hudson Valley Area, specifically those whom have gone to college at SUNY NEW PALTZ and taken a diverse curriculum.
I'm really heartbroken and upset.
Back in the 90's, I considered my self a kid, I kinda still am, with hell of alot more life experience and maturity. I took a combination of black studies classes and Journalism classes back in the early 90's and despite what happened during those days in my self discovery, I got soo much out of those classes and also a sense of cultural history that I NEEDED to KNOW.
Back in the early 90's there was so much going on in music, culture and arts, and new generation (generation X) of youngins whom needed to have a sense of their own history, because if you don't know where you were, you don't know where you're going.
Back in the early 90's there was surge in black cultural understanding, any thing from SPIKE LEE's movies, to the X hats, to the RODNEY KING riots, to a more liberal alternative perspective on the word we live in.

The irony of this, with technology at my disposal compared to the late eighties and early 90's, I was surfing and researching YOU TUBE a couple of days ago for material about the last decade (ITP WORLD APOCALYPSE perhaps a 1999-2009 EDITION, specific to the issue of hurricane Katrina) and through the network of YOU TUBE, a stumbled upon the SPIKE LEE documentary "When the Levee Breaks", a must see, and then I found some of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. speeches and then some cool stuff that puts things in perspective about MALCOLM X.
I came to some closure about MALCOLM X's death. A weird synergy of timing, and with the cultural curiosity that I've always had.
And then, maybe two days later, I hear the awful news about JACK GOLDBERG (Jack's Rhythms owner) and now Dr. MARGARET WADE LEWIS SUNY NEW PALTZ BLACK STUDIES PROFESSOR.
According to the obituaries of the NEW PALTZ TIMES, SUNY NEW PALTZ BLACK STUDIES college professor DR. MARGARET WADE LEWIS has passed and succumbed to cancer. .
I did take a few classes with DR. MARGARET WADE LEWIS back in the early 90's, one class was BLACK ENGLISH LANGUAGE and culture as I was really creative with my papers back then, using rap to explain black ebonics and dialects as the semantics that we use as black folk is rooted back to slavery, the African diaspora (we call Africa the first world) and black culture dating back to Africa. In fact, through all I've been through, I still have my notebook from that class.
A funny story about college curriculum diversity, is that I ran into retired SUNY NEW PALTZ Women's Studies Professor on GAY PRIDE last June, we struck up a conversation because she recognized me from my old college days, although I was little embarrassed, she explained that the Womens Studies department has expanded their department to classes such as QUEER STUDIES. :Slaps Head: I only could wish SUNY NEW PALTZ offered that class when I was in college, as I should have taken some psychology and sociology classes too.
While it might seem that certain majors in college are vague in reference (art, black studies, womens studies, music) if those majors are integrated within education, sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology majors, you will be surprised how valuable of an asset YOU will be to the career market with a cultural perspective on society, culture, history and life.
ITP is big proponent of diversity in school curriculum. Black Studies, Womens Studies and even courses in blue collar vocations are offered in colleges NOW. In fact, it is now MANDATORY to take a few black studies and womens studies classes as part of the General Education Requirements at SUNY NEW PALTZ (liberal arts education). This is how far Dr. Margaret Wade Lewis took the Black Studies department at SUNY NEW PALTZ: First black studies were optional courses, then a major, NOW a few black studies classes (a few credits) are considered General Education mandatory requirements. If you do go to college try to get the most out of your experience, take a WIDE RANGE of classes, along with life experience..
Funny thing, I've had friends whom have gone to UCC (Ulster Community College) and their
entry level (101) classes are almost too easy, as I cracked open their ( 6 page chapter in boldface) text books and compared it to some of black studies and journalism classes and asked my friends, please apply your self to your classes, this is nothing compared to the classes I took at SUNY NEW PALTZ.
My perspective of music and art is how it relates to culture, a time, place and history, as anything from the rise of the Scandinavian black metal scene, rooted strongly in Scandinavian culture, middle eastern culture integrated within metal as to how culture effects music and how it is integrated into such. Of course I try to write (ITP's author being a quarter Cherokee Indian, half African American, and (I think) part Persian , and also part European) about how society and music relates to my own cultural diversity and others as well..
If you venture outside American cultural metal, you will find millions of people of color whom just happened to be metal heads, check Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Australian outback, Brazil, Central, South America and the middle east.
DR. MARGARET WADE LEWIS was an excellent college professor at SUNY NEW PALTZ, active in cultural awareness, her church, and black history lectures, and a very kind person as well.
RIP to DR. MARGARET WADE LEWIS, she is much missed in our community as condolences go out to friends, family, colleagues, students of Dr. MARGARET WADE LEWIS.

Legendary Canadian metal band VOIVOD have announced two-weeks worth of tour dates in support of their latest release Infini. This tour will kick-off in early March and include guests KREATOR, NACHTMYSTIUM, EVILE and LAZARUS A.D.. R.I.P. JACK GOLDBERG OWNER OF JACK'S RHYTHMS NEW PALTZ, NY

EDITORS NOTE: I'm soo sorry, tragic way to kick off the new year, I just found this out on MYSPACE: JACK GOLDBERG the owner of two local record stores (New Paltz, and Woodstock, NY) JACKS RHYTHMS has passed away at 66.
I can only tell you how many CD's I bought and traded from him back in the day, and metal mags, and fanzines I got into from browsing his window (MAXIMUM ROCK AND ROLL, PUNK PLANET, TERRORIZER UK). He once told me a few years ago, "Yeh, my son listens to the music you listen to, we'll try to stock some of the metal you like". Not to mention the loyal support that JACK GOLDBERG gave to the local music scene, of any genre. I would always browse the fliers of the local bands, including posting the fliers of the local bands I used to book in his store window, and hearing the chatter about music "Hey man I saw Dylan." ITP's author used to work at TOWER RECORDS (NYC) back in the early 90's, so it's one of those things, I have a soft spot for record stores, specifically the smaller indie stores. I'm so sorry to hear that JACK GOLDBERG passed. R.I.P JACK GOLDBERG and condolences to all friends, family, employees, and music fans whom have had the pleasure of chatting and patronizing JACKS record store. JACK RHYTHMS has been a musical institution in the New Paltz Ulster County region for over 20 years and then some. RIP JACK GOLDBERG. )
UPDATE: 1/6/2010: JACK GOLDBERG (owner of JACKS RHYTHMS) passed from a long battle with brain cancer, and to be honest, I would have never known because up to 2008, you could still see JACK GOLDBERG opening and closing his store and I've seen him numerous times walking down the street in 2009. BTW, if you can't find a CD in stock at JACKS RHYTHMS, just ask the clerk to order it, ironically enough it takes the same amount of time if not LESS than ordering a release online from a distributor (I compared) as when I ordered OPETH's LAMENTATION (LIVE AT SHEPARD'S BUSH) the order only took a week and I didn't have pay for shipping and handling.
