German funeral doom project WORSHIP are the "grand daddies" of this obscure, extreme metal sub genre. Despite WORSHIP's tragic history, the band has soldiered on to unleash now TWO funeral doom milestones.
Originally a two man project, WORSHIP's original drummer MAD MAX (MAX VARNIER) committed suicide in 2000, jumping off a bridge while on vacation in Canada. Salvaging the ruins of an excellent funeral doom project are the surviving members of WORSHIP, including vocalist DOOMMONGER (Daniel Pharos).

In the years following MAD MAX (MAX VARNIER) death, WORSHIP's demo
"LAST TAPE BEFORE DOOMSDAY" (DEMO-1999) had become a sought out collectors item inspiring the band to re-issue the release in vinyl format and re-activate.

A re-activated WORSHIP took the ashes of MAX VARNIERS demos and unleashed the bands first full length entitled "DOOOM" (2007) hailed as a funeral doom classic.

In closure of MAX VARNIER's life, WORSHIP have renewed their darkened funeral doom rituals as "TERRANEAN WAKE" is the bands first release without Varnier.

Here at ITP V.012 we have WORSHIP's second full length "TERRANEAN WAKE".

WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE" opens with the (17:29) track "Tide Of Terminus".  WORSHIP's  "Tide Of Terminus" kicks off with ominous atmosphere, as if someone is walking. WORSHIP crawl into "Tide Of Terminus", exhaling a deep growl as if it your last breath as you know you're in for a spooky
journey. WORSHIP evoke a melancholic atmospere as "Tide Of Terminus" weeps melodic guitars leads.

WORSHIP's  "Tide Of Terminus" stops and starts to contemplate an added chord until the band breaks for melancholic noise,  as the silence of lightly strummed guitar effects paints a paranoid atmosphere, the silence is deafening.           WORSHIP's  "Tide Of Terminus" amalgamates a lurking dark atmosphere with creepy spoken word, comforting in depression as between life and death, an ominous presence will let you know you are not alone as words are chanted, "I saw the end"..
WORSHIP's  "Tide Of Terminus" joins the solace of the band as they trudge along with tight, traditional funeral doom, consoling the masses as the ritual segues into melodic guitars, each note slowly bended until "Tide Of Terminus" segues seamlessly into "The Second Coming Apart".

WORSHIP's "The Second Coming Apart" features melodic guitars, played soulfully as each note is bent in a vibrato, as if to squeeze out every bit of psychic pain.
WORSHIP's drummer ("Gravedrummer"-Claus Legarth) is excellent, balancing a painful snails pace with complex time measures.

WORSHIP's "The Second Coming Apart" dives for deeper waters (7:30), with an epic melody (8:53) washing over you like waves from an ocean. WORSHIP's "The Second Coming Apart" offers alot in subtle transitional riff and time changes, and if you're patient, you WILL appreciate.

WORSHIP's "Fear Is My Temple" segues beautifully from the previous piece with more straight forward, repetitive, downtuned riffing and an understated melody.
With a snare beat, WORSHIP's "Fear Is My Temple" features a subtle segue (4:03) into a snails pace of a terrifying and mournful atmosphere.  WORSHIP's "Fear Is My Temple" crawls back into a rolling, bluesy, sludge riff.

"Fear is My Temple", growls "Doommonger" as if you listen closely, the floor dips with that subtle segue and the tune crawls underneath the cracks of despair.

WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE" closes with the "End Of An Aeviturne".    "We were monuments, blind vermin and deluded Kings", growls (one word at a time) "The Doommonger", as if breathless in despair, desperate in frustration.
WORSHIP's "End Of An Aeviturne" trudges minimalist funeral doom with an understated melody and "DOOMMONGER's" primal growl.
"End Of An Aeviturne" contemplates a last nod into oblivion (4:20) with a calm instrumental break consolidated within spoken word. WORSHIP's "End Of An Aeviturne" closes with an extended funeral instrumental section, played tight with conviction, segueing into a melancholic piano outro.

WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE" is ONE majestic composition of despairing Apocalyptic funeral doom.
"TERRANEAN WAKE's" track-listing divides the composition into (four) different "parts", as this despairing masterpiece should be consumed as a whole.

WORSHIP's debut "DOOOM' featured varied and shorter songwriting.
WORSHIP stick to the tradition of funeral doom as "TERRANEAN WAKE" expands songwriting into sparse, lengthy and desolate soundscapes.
WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE evoke compositional forays from bluesy sludge, to subtle riff transitions of despondent funeral doom.

WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE" features stellar musicianship. WORSHIP's  drummer ("Gravedrummer"-Claus Legarth) and DOOMMONGER (DANIEL PHAROS) evoke flawless performances of tight drumming while weaving riffs into a slow paced cauldron of melancholic atmospheres.

Don't despair, WORSHIP have written another addicting masterpiece of depression, progressing into the Epic and transcending all psychic oppression.     WORSHIP's "TERRANEAN WAKE" honers the tradition of funeral doom and the legacy of MAX VARNIER.
