A psychological and spiritual journey from childhood to manhood – Nordic-Folk-outfit NORDEIN presents nothing less on its highly emotional second album „Etna“, released in conspiracy with Eisenwald. It contains dark, ritualistic yet ultimately uplifting hymns about the process of becoming a man on this ever-turning planet called earth, dealing with the questions, wonders, and atrocities that lie therein. Fans of nordic acts such as Wardruna and Heilung will enjoy it as much as those who like to lose themselves in the entrancing world music sounds of Dead Can Dance and Arcana.
Nordein came to life in 2018, when Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Jørn Øyhus (Byrdi, Varde, Nordjevel), who had been growing up in a musical family with different instruments always at reach, felt a sudden flare of inspiration. Catalyzed by profound personal changes in life, the need for a solo project became very obvious. So it was time for him to go inwards and break down the hard exterior from playing in touring bands for many years. Instead, he started to create highly reflective pieces of music on his own, deeply rooted in nature and his homelands‘ impressive mountain landscapes – resulting in the debut-record „Nordariket“ (Eisenwald, 2020).
Now, the follow-up „Etna“ explores themes that are far more autobiographical. The album is named after the eternal river of childhood and new life. „Etna“ is the source flowing from the mountains and down to the fields, cleaning and purifying everything in its path. Consequently, Jørn Øyhus describes the process of writing the songs on his new piece of art as „like having mirror therapy sessions“. The record tells about the thoughts and ponderings of a man whose life kept falling apart piece by piece until there was nothing left but a broken person. A human being that had lost everything except his music to guide him and light his way.
„Etna“ was self-recorded in Jørn Øyhus‘ own „BergArt Studio“ in Norway, where the forest is his neighbor and dear friend. His brother Tor Erik Øyhus came by to play the bassoon once owned by their father, who had recently passed away. Emily Nybakk sang the female vocal-parts and Mathias Gyllengahm played the nyckelharpa. Mastering was done at Klangschmiede E by Empyrium’s own Markus Stock.
Thus, „Etna“ has become a deeply touching, cathartic meditation on big universal themes and experiences such as life and growing up, the inheritance of the forefathers, escapism, nostalgia, death, loss, grief, and even visions of God and the afterlife. It is the statement of a man, who decided to reflect upon the state of his existence. It is an ode to the healing powers of the arcane knowledge that lies within all our souls. It is a captivating testament to a spiritual journey many listeners will relate to.
