ITP V.023 THE MUSIC BUSINESS: SPOTIFY TO ADOPT NEW POLICY OF NOT PAYING ROYALTIES TO SMALLER ARTISTS

Digital music server SPOTIFY may demonetize tracks and artists that receive less than 0.5% of the royalty pool.  This new royalty system can hurt small independent and unsigned artists.

FROM GORE HOUSE PRODUCTIONS:

As someone who openly promoted the benefits of using Spotify for musicians, I wanted to remind you that if this in fact goes into effect, independent artist and labels can CHOOSE to remove their catalog from the platform. This potentially means, several thousand of its users will eventually cancel their subscription and/or switch to a different platform, causing Spotify a sure loss.
Can you imagine if Metal as a whole was removed from the platform? While its unlikely, even "big" independent metal labels would be affected by this.
I will definitely be keeping an eye on this and how it develops and encourage other indies to do so as well.

FROM SEPSISS:

**Attention musicians and music lovers!**
We have been desperately warning you for years about this oncoming industry disaster.
Spotify is considering a new model that would only pay artists with over 1,500 monthly listeners. This would mean that 90% of artists on Spotify would no longer be paid. Artists are outraged by the proposal, saying that it would kill the music industry. If the proposal is implemented, it would be a major blow to emerging artists and small labels. Please do your own research. Please do not take our word for it. Please read and learn about what is about to happen on your own. Prepare your self!
Supporting articles and data will be in the comments.
**What does this mean for you?** If you're a musician, it's important to start thinking about how you can generate revenue outside of Spotify. If you're a music lover, you need to let Spotify know that you oppose this proposal. Bullet points
