FROM AT THE GATES:
[Tomas Lindberg 1972 - 2025]
Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment.
Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved.
Tomas - You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit.
You will be eternally missed.
FROM OPETH:
Goodbye Tomas ”Tompa” ”Goatspell” Lindberg.
It’s with overpowering shock that I write this, having just received the news that he has passed on.
I first met with Tomas in the early 90’s when Opeth had a show (our second show ever) in Gothenbourg. Appearing on the bill was (I believe) ourselves, Therion and an minor arsenal of bands with period names such as Mega-slaughter, Sarcazm, Desercrator. Also appearing was a band with a yet more curious name, At the gates.
We made our way from Stockholm to be greeted at the GBG central station by none other than Tomas Lindberg himself. He looked ragged and…untamed? Long frizzy blonde hair, huge blonde/ginger beard. An intimidating character in appearance, yet incredibly kind and welcoming in person.
At the gates blew my mind that night. Their music was unlike anything I’d heard, and the performance a study in controlled technical violence. Yet with soaring melancholic melodies. I feel tempted to use the term ”progressive” here, although I doubt I knew what that meant at the time. As a frontman, Tomas was just beyond anything I’d seen. He was awesome, plain and simple. Wild! He appeared so immersed in the music that it seemed to take utter and complete control of him. It was a joy to see (and hear), and from that day ATG became one of my favorite bands.
We’d run into each other now and then over the years. Intellectually, he seemed to be a step above and beyond your generic metal musician. You could talk to Tomas about anything. Perhaps his job as a teacher played a role, I don’t know, but he had a keen ear to whatever topic was brought up.
I can’t believe that he’s gone….
Tomas, my friend. You were a pioneering musician. A fantastic frontman and singer. A lovely human being! You’ve always had my endless respect. A respect that will flow effortlessly, even now that you’re no longer with us.

Rest in peace.

Malmo,Sweden 1989 a young man in the front row demanding we play “Siege of Power” who is this man I thought ? Tomas Lindberg it was and on that day our friendship began and blossomed and matured and matured … yes we made great music together but it’s those conversations we had in between the travelling and playing that really mattered .. we would talk about many things.. trying to make sense of our world .. a great sense of humour and empathy towards others and quietly sensitive I felt behind it all … I will fucking miss you mate .. I already am .. Heartbroken … sincere condolences to his family and band members RIP Tompa

FROM ROCKABILA.COM:
The music world lost another one of the most important and influential voices of all time today π.
Like many, At The Gates’ ‘Slaughter of the Soul’ was THE album that got me into death metal. When I was in my late teens/early twenties and the metalcore explosion was happening, I remember going down the rabbit hole of all these new bands I suddenly loved and found one commonality amongst them all: they were each heavily influenced by At The Gates, and even more specifically, their album ‘Slaughter of the Soul’. When I first heard it, I was blown away with just how melodic it was, because I honestly didn’t know death metal could even BE melodic at the time. For me personally, it was THE album that bridged the gap between being a kid that was into punk and hardcore, to getting into more extreme death metal. It was the “gateway” album to a whole “new” world of music for me to discover so to speak, and for that, I am eternally grateful for the impact it had on my life.
Rest In Power, Tomas Lindberg!

FROM AVATAR:
We are devastated to learn about Tomas Lindberg’s passing. His work in and outside of At The Gates have not only provided us with endless inspiration and aspirations,
but more than anything his music has provided us with some of the best times of our lives. There is no conversation about the Gothenburg sound, of all the things our corner of the world has become known for in music, that doesn’t include Tompa. His influence will continue to be felt all over the world, for all time.
Thank you Tompa. Whenever there is red in the sky, we will thank you for what you gave to all of us.
Our thoughts are with Tomas’ near and dear ones, inside and outside of the music world.
FROM PARTY SAN METAL OPEN AIR:
RIP Tompa.. You have been a true legend & gentleman
FROM LORD AHRIMAN (DARK FUNERAL):
RIP my old friend, you will be missed!
I will never forget the day when I called up Dolores, still living up in Lulea, and asked for their latest recomendations. They
said, you gotta get this album by Grotesque. And I did. And then a few years later when we met and hung out at Lars Rosenbergs (@entombed) place the three of us, which happened again quite a few times. Good times indeed.
FROM DAN LILKER:
It is with a very heavy heart that I bring up the subject of my dear friend Tomas Lindberg’s (known to all simply as “Tompa”) passing…
Tompa was an old, old friend of mine. Not only were we just old mates from the international metal scene, but I shared the stage with him many times as fill-in bassist for Lockup when Shane Embury wasn’t available. We even shared a room together frequently on those tours.
He also wrote the forward for the new edition of my biography that was released last year, and now that I know how long he was dealing with his illness, which he kept private until fairly recently, I realize now that he penned that foreword while he was suffering from the condition that eventually took him from us.
It would’ve been quite easy for him to decline writing that foreword since he was obviously dealing with something much more important and urgent than that, but nonetheless he rose to the occasion and contributed an extremely touching and articulate group of words that I now will not be able to read without crying.
It’s for others to laud his achievements in all the killer bands he participated in- this is just me mourning a brother that meant a lot to me for a long time.
RIP Tompa, you were an original and you will be missed more than these words can possibly express.
Dan Lilker
FROM UNLEASHED:
Very sad news has reached us today. A good friend of the band - Tompa of At The Gates has left us after some time of illness.
Last time we met we spoke in detail about how to perform and make justice to the Entombed songs at the GΓ€vle Metal Festival in Sweden. We both said it isn’t easy to just go on stage to sing and perform like Mr. Petrov. But we both agreed to do our very best and have a good time. And…you did great of course. Like always on our shows together in the past, with great spirit and passion for the music.
Farewell Tompa…we will see you again in Valhalla!
FROM TOM GABRIEL WARRIOR (TRYPTYKON/CELTIC FROST):
It has been hours since I first heard it, but my mind still refuses to believe that Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg, one of the most significant singers of modern extreme metal,
has died.
I was granted the honour of repeatedly sharing a stage with Tomas when Triptykon, during the early days of the band's existence, was invited to be the special guest on At The Gates' "At War With Reality" European tour in December of 2014. It wasn't a tour with easy conditions for both bands, yet Tompa still performed flawlessly every night and during the soundchecks I was fortunate to watch.
It was also an incredible privilege for Triptykon to have Tompa join us onstage during some of the concerts in order to sing the lead vocals for Celtic Frost's "Circle Of The Tyrants". I shall never forget the smiles we traded during these and many other moments.
[Photos of Tomas Lindberg by TGW, December 2014.]
FROM DANI FILTH (CRADLE OF FILTH):
It’s with a very grave heart that i acknowledge the untimely passing of extreme metal vocalist Tomas Lindberg.
Such a genuinely nice person and author of one of the best melodic death metal albums ever, At The Gates’ epic ‘Slaughter Of The Soul’.
Tomas and I first toured together back in 1994, which, along with headliners Anathema, was Cradle’s first real foray into Europe on a tour bus.
Tomas taught a young fledgling me a lot about being a vocalist and looking after your voice on this tour and I feel I will be ever indebted to his kindness, as well as his extensive musical output.
Rest in peace old friend.
Only the dead are smiling.

FROM BANGER TV:
So saddened to have lost one of metal’s greats. Tomas was a remarkably talented vocalist, lyricist, and had a boundless creative mind. I feel very fortunate to have
spent time with him over the years. Always a friendly and considerate soul. We’ve lost a true treasure who may have penned the most inspirational line to ever open a metal album: WE ARE BLIND TO THE WORLDS WITHIN US, WAITING TO BE BORN. Tompa forever!
-Sam Dunn
FROM HEAVEN SHALL BURN:
In
memory of Tompa. A truly remarkable guy and artist left this world far
too early. His work with At The Gates in particular was absolutely
style-defining and inspirational
for the horde of young musicians who would one day start this thing
called metalcore. Bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Trivium
and also Heaven Shall Burn wouldn’t be what they are today without At
The Gates. Tompa’s intelligent and profound lyrics in particular, but
also his always uncompromising and clear punk rock and hardcore
attitude, were always a positive disharmony in the slick metal circus
that is overflowing with cliches and platitudes. The last time we spoke,
quite a while ago, he wanted to know all about our football
sponsorship; he thought the idea of bands supporting socially active
clubs was absolutely fantastic. We’ve been wanting to send you a jersey
for ages and keep forgetting. Time flies and before you know it, many
things are too late. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Let’s
celebrate Tompa’s legacy and carry it forward through this decaying
world, so that this truly exceptional artist will never be forgotten!
Take care, old friend.
FROM ASPHYX:

FROM OLD NIGHT:
Another one of my childhood heroes has taken the final bow. I know the music of ATG is not something you would immediately connect with us but I've been a fan since
their first record.
I had the chance to catch them live before the breakup, as they were one of the first bands to visit Croatia after the war, and I saw them on their tour with Napalm Death back in '96. They were a force to be reckoned with!! I saw them again on their first reunion tour and nothing changed, they were still the band I fell in love so long ago.
Tompa was a great frontman, a unique and amazing singer, but for me, he was one of the best lyricists out there. He was a true wordsmith.
Thank you for everything! I enjoyed your side projects, and the record you did with The Crown was out of this world!!
"Oh set me free - crucify life itself
And let your joy be the reality
Our suffering life - the dream"
FROM JESPER STROMBLAD:
See you on the other side and as Tompa said; Take care of your loved ones, cherish every moment on this earth, life is fragile.
You will be missed

FROM SLAVE TO THE GRIND (A FILM ABOUT GRINDCORE):
Somewhere I have a 90 minute long interview I did with this man. He was articulate, Sharp, and provided great insight into the metal and punk communities. On the
personal level, him, and I spent nearly an hour after the interview discussing the role of religion in schools. Him and I both taught world religions at the high school level, and we discussed a various ways of being neutral and reducing bias in the classroom. He was an atheist, but saw the value in students learning about religious history, and it was a profound chat that has stayed with me for many years.
I’m deeply saddened by his passing.
Side note - when his band lock up played in Toronto, I remember, leaving with this tingling feeling in my brain that perhaps I should make a documentary about grindcore as my previous film was wrapping up.
FROM COUNTLESS SKIES:
Very saddened to hear of the passing of Tomas Lindberg of At The Gates. A fantastic vocalist and a huge influence on the Gothenburg melodeth scene
FROM THE ABYSS:
It took some time to deal with devastating news we received this morning. Pain, sadness, and disbelief. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Tomase's family, friends and
band mates. We will forever miss you!
Tompa was a dear friend. We shared many cherished memories with him at The Abyss and The Abyss Festival. One of my favorites is from The Abyss Festival in 2019—international guests were stunned to see Tompe himself being in the cloakroom, taking their jackets with a big smile. Everybody was in disbelief and thought that was the coolest thing ever.
But that was Tompa. Always grounded, always kind, always helpful. He never cared about the status or spotlight—he cared about people, and he cared about the scene.
Zero superstar attitude. 100% heart. 100% genuine.
When you talk about the Gothenburg sound — that unique blend of melody and mayhem that reshaped death metal in the '90s — you can’t avoid mentioning Tomas Lindberg. Not because he chased the spotlight, but because he was the pulse of it. He was there before it even had a name, before there were polished records or tours abroad — just cold basements, DIY venues, and this hunger to make something more.
But beyond the music, it was Tompe's attitude that stuck with you. He wasn’t trying to be a rock star — he was a scene guy. Always around, supporting other bands, lifting up the underground, never acting like he was above it. Whether he was on stage or just hanging out at shows, he felt like part of the community — not apart from it.
For me — and for a lot of us — Tompe represents the soul of Gothenburg’s death metal movement. Not just because he helped create the sound, but because he lived it — honest, intense, and always moving forward. Without him, that whole scene might’ve burned out or just blended into the rest. But because of him, it became something lasting. Something important.
Forever in our thoughts,
Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg
Rest in peace, friend

FROM COSTIN CHIOREANU:
I discovered Tomas in the golden age of my youth, at the same time with all the Gods of music, forming the heart mythology of my life and my passion. His voice was
truly unique and his lyrics and visions were fascinating me, creating in my head so many surreal and inner landscapes and trespasses to unknown dimensions of self discovery. The dramatism, the fatalism, the dark poetry taste of the intensity of his work triggered me, fulfilled my urge for substance and for quest beyond what is easy to get. I was fortunate to live the experience of meeting in person this God, becoming friends and even to create together various works of light and darkness, acts materialized into recorded history for the last 13 years. One of the most iconic vocalists of metal music, a pioneer and a visionary who triggered my urge for going where no man has gone before, one of the kindest and passionate person I ever met, a real human and a real music lover. I am proud for sharing my creativity with this genius who always inspired me through his lyrics, visions and concepts to capture new spots of meaning and shapes, outhere... into the vast darkness of the unknown. Thank you for all the massive intensity you brought into my life, my dear friend.... you left here a monument, which my heart and my ears are constantly admiring.

My deepest condolences to his wife, family and friends. It is surreal what is happening but it is what it is...at war with reality...

FROM REDEFINING DARKNESS RECORDS:
RIP to one of the greatest, Tomas ‘Tompa’ Lindberg.
Hearing ‘Slaughter of the Soul’ in 1995, the year it was released, was a revelation to my 14 year old self. Everyone tried to mimic Tomas’ vocal style much like metal singers tried to mimic Phil Anselmo previous. Everyone was into that scathing higher pitched scream after that album released, not to mention, all the 2000’s U.S. metalcore that tried desperately to imitate something far out of their reach / ability.
And even after all the years of success, he never stopped supporting the Underground. I never could have imagined Tomas would one day be supporting my label and respective artists… RIP to a legend. My heart goes out to his family and all that knew and loved him.

FROM NASUM:
Tompa

Somewhere I have an awesome photo of Tompa and Mieszko on stage as impromptu Napalm Death singers during the Dist 2000 festival 25 years ago, but I can't access it right now.
Well, this sucks. The statement from
At The Gates a month ago was alarming and being all too aware of the ruthlessness of cancer this outcome was more or less unavoidable. Such a loss for the world.
I can't say that I was a close friend of Tompa but our paths met every now or then due to different reasons. He was a nice guy, smart and talented and I learned so much from all the interviews with him I read.
At one time, he phoned me and asked me if I could join his band The Great Deceiver as a drummer for a tour. I could not do it due to work, but I sort of wish that I had done it.
Two years ago, my friend Jimmy arranged a video greeting from Tompa for my 50th birthday party. I will cherish that forever. I will also cherish the copy of Napalm Death's "Scum" that is in my collection because it actually was Tompa’s that got in my hands in some strange way.
R.I.P. Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg, 1972-2025, you will be sorely missed but your legacy will live forever. / Anders

FROM DARKEST HOUR:
Tomas Lindberg. Rest In Peace to a legend amongst legends.
Tomas Lindberg and his band,
At The Gates, has been one of our biggest collective musical influences. I will always remember hearing his music for the first time. It lit the flame that still burns as the band Darkest Hour. Not only was he one of our most important musical influences, he was also a loyal, loving, and devoted friend.
He is directly responsible for Darkest Hour’s - Hidden Hands of A Sadist Nation record. He was the one who encouraged us to record in Sweden and who gave us the direct number to Studio Freeman. When no one in Sweden would take us seriously or even call us back, it was he who pressured them to book us at the studio and take us seriously.
It was also Tomas who gathered up a whole slew of Gothenburg’s elite to guest on that record, validating our band to everyone and finally getting the greater metal world to take us more seriously.
He let our entire band live in his family home and sleep on his floor when we were stranded in Gothenburg. Later hosting us several times, always making sure we were taken care of, he had endless patience for our stupid fan-boy madness.
I'll never forget watching him practice writing the word ‘GO' over and over. We were going to have him draw it on us so we could get it tattooed….he just took it so seriously. He even pulled me aside and said, “Mike, are you sure you want to do this?" I have never been more proud of a tattoo and never been more thankful to the gods of rock for putting us in the path of this true legend. Sending love to his family and band mates. Tomas will always be our idol, his music will be with us forever, along with the memories of his kindness.

FROM HAMMERFALL:
FROM METAL BLADE RECORDS AND THE CROWN:
Tomas Lindberg was one of the best to ever wield a mic in the metal scene. To type this feels like a wild understatement, insufficient in remembering such a
tremendously powerful figure, taken from us all far too soon. His voice helped shape a generation of heavy music and he was as much a part of the metal "family" as he was genuine heavy metal royalty. His voice will continue to reverberate through speakers around the globe as long the as the Earth orbits the Sun; such is the timelessness of his work. Undeniably a legend. He will be dearly missed.
Some words from The Crown:
"We are grateful to have shared moments of friendship, creativity and the stage with one of the legends of the Death Metal scene.
"Tompa made metal more beautiful and poetic in his groundbreaking lyrics which he spearheaded with his iconic voice that was carrying enormous emotions of both vulnerable pain and aggression. His influence on this art is a massive legacy that will never die."

Det gΓΆr sΓ₯ jΓ€vla jΓ€vla ont.
Tomas, you were my guiding light. You taught me what true artistry is. From that first time i nervously entered Kristian WhΓ₯lins basement in
HovΓ₯s where Grotesque rehearsed and I got to hear and see what a band is. I was 14 an you 16 and I say there watching you scream your lungs out through ”Blood runs from the altar” and Bathory’s ”Enter the eternal fire” and in that room that day, my life was fundamentally altered and you have been that beacon ever since.
From discovering new obscure demos through a crusty old tape recorder in the parks around Gothenburg, to talking endlessly about what music is and should be. How something like this new and emerging genre could and should mean something, and that it must somehow matter.
To say that you were the single most important person to the metal scene in our little city is an understatement. Your generosity and humble nature was infectious to everyone around you. You set the tone for how we should treat each other, in the scene and without and it was through this humility and laser sharp intellect you inspired and gave of your time and attention to friends and family, your students and your devoted audience. May your integrity, passion and dedication continue to inspire and encourage us all.
I love you Tompa, always.
