ITP V.011:ONLY ONE PER COFFIN: R.I.P. DAVID GOLD (WOODS OF YPRES)

It is with sadness that ITP V.011 announces that founder of Canadian blackened/doom band WOODS OF YPRES, DAVID GOLD was killed last night in a collision between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian, Gold was 31 years old. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled to be held in Gold's hometown of Sault Ste. Marie on December 28. WOODS OF YPRES' new album, "Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light", will be unleashed on 1/31/2012 via Earache Records.

The heavy metal community is mourning the loss of multi-instrumentalist David Gold, who was killed on Highway 400, north of Highway 89, on Wednesday afternoon.

Fans knew the 31-year-old Sault Ste. Marie native as the driving force behind the doom metal band, Woods of Ypres.

Ian Morris said he remembers Gold as a talented musician and a humble person.

"The music meant a lot to him personally," Morris said in a telephone interview from South Bay, Calif. "He was a very interesting character."

Gold displayed his talent in live settings and in the studio after recording all the instruments on his five albums, including Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light, set to be released on Earache Records in 2012, Morris said.

Ontario Provincial Police shut down the highway's northbound lanes Wednesday afternoon.

What caused the collision between a car and a pedestrian, which resulted in Gold's death, remains under investigation.

The four-piece band played a show at the Avalon Club in South Bay, where Morris was writing reviews of up-and-coming acts which included Woods of Ypres.

"(Gold) contacted me directly and said thanks, and that's the kind of person he was. He was very in touch with his fan base," Morris said. "It was a very emotional experience especially for David Gold, because most of the work was written and produced by him."

Morris said fans connected with Gold because they could identify with his music, as the lyrics spoke to fans on multiple levels.

"A lot of his lyrics were very personal. He dealt with things he had gone through in his life and what he personally had to deal with in life," Morris said. "I think that's why his music resonated a lot with people."

Earache Records set up a memorial page on its website after learning of Gold's death.

"A great musician, and a friend. RIP, Dave. You'll be missed," wrote one fan.

"My whole world just shifted," wrote another.

The band formed in 2002 and released their first full-length album, Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth, in 2004, shortly after Gold moved to Toronto in 2003.

All northbound lanes of Highway 400 at Highway 89 have reopened following a fatal afternoon collision.

According to OPP, a male pedestrian was struck on Highway 400 after he walked onto the highway shortly after 1 p.m.

Police confirmed that the man died a short time later from his injuries.

The highway was reopened just after 5 p.m.

It is with great sorrow I announce that Mr. David Gold from Woods of Ypres has passed away as a result of an accident in Ontario, Canada.

He is one of the nicer guys you could hope to meet, whether in person or online. Always pleasant to speak with, excited about what he was doing, and just seemed like one of those guys who was living for the day.

He has hosted his forums here at Ultimate Metal for a long time now, starting with his own Krakenhaus label which included his own band Woods of Ypres. He was always picky about his forum header, liking it tweaked right down to the absolute pixel! It was my pleasure tweaking until he was happy, I appreciated his attention to detail on things like that.

Stop by and raise a metal fist for Mr. Gold. The world is a little darker today with him not with us.

BW&BK has learned that WOODS OF YPRES frontman/drummer/founder David Gold was killed in an accident near Barrie, Ontario on December 22nd. Information surrounding his passing has yet to be made public.

A long time friend and supporter of BW&BK, and without a doubt one of the hardest working musicians - independent or signed - on the Canadian metal scene, David will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends in this tragic time.

David's family will be holding a memorial service in his home town of Sault Ste. Marie, tentatively scheduled for December 28th. Details will be confirmed in the coming days.
