//PRIMORDIAL//
Primordial have been around for a good 25 years, and they're arguably the greatest Irish metal band of all times (not counting a certain 70's hard rock band). Blending folk inspiration and traditional extreme metal the band has gathered a significant following throughout the years, and proven themselves as a killer live act, not least thanks to frontman Nemtheanga, who can send chills down the spine of the toughest of us with his remarkable vocals on top of the crushing band. Needless to say, witnessing PRIMORDIAL on the Garage stage will be one of the most intense experiences of this year's Beyond the Gates. We are also considering refusing all performing artists to participate in any form of quiz this year due to this booking...
//SINMARA//
'
Sinmara was previously known under the name of CHAO, having released under that name the demo cassette Spiritus Sankti also on TERRATUR POSSESSIONS. The change in name sees the band develop upon their foundations of chaotic agression contrasted with haunting melodies, bringing forth a newfound maturity and focus of composition, masterful musicianship and a zealous intensity of execution. Along with the change in name there has also been a change in line-up, and the band now features members of Wormlust, Rebirth of Nefast and Svartidauði. Aphotic Womb (Out in May!) takes the listener on a descent into a writhing underworld of diverse soundscapes and themes, from the harmonic chaos and orchestrated madness of “Verminous”, to the mournful elegy of the title track, and culminating in the eschatological epic “Mountains of Quivering Bones”. //SONNE ADAM//
Since we're in the mood for exotic countries today, we're proud to present all the way from Israel, with their extremely heavy doom/black metal, the awesome SONNE ADAM. Not an old band, but still they have made an impression on the extreme metal scene with their EPs and the 2011 album "Transformation". Another splendid addition to your most badass metal festival, if we may say so ourselves!
//SATAN'S SATYRS//
//INQUISITION//
//IRKALLIAN ORACLE//
One of the releases that garnered the most attention in 2013 was Irkallian Oracle’s “Grave Ekstasis” tape, now unleashed on vinyl and compact disc through Nuclear War Now! The esoteric Death Metal played by Irkallian Oracle superbly reflects the interwoven traditions of Death and Black metal with the arcane ritualistic nature of the latter subsumed within the physically oppressive structure of the former. The band went from an unknown act for the underground fanatics to a Black Metal sensation over night, these days playing all the major festivals within the Black/Death Metal genre around the world, and well deserved doing so. And this is where Beyond The Gates comes into play, presenting their first ever gig in Norway! August can't come fast enough!
//JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES//
Finland might not be considered the top country when it comes to metal, but as one of many bands on the fabolous Svart Records roster, Jess and the Ancient Ones delivers top class psychedelic heavy rock with influences from the 70's and 80's hard rock and metal scene. Fronted by the magnificent Jess, we are ready to be mesmerized and taken on a trip that's not soon to be forgotten, so prepare for an astral sabbat!
//THE RUINS OF BEVERAST//
Who would imagine the one man force The Ruins Of Beverast would ever grace us with a live performance, and none would even dream to think he could ever capture the claustrophobic and unique atmosphere the albums are filled to the brim with. But what a live band they have become! With members from other well known acts such as Secrets Of The Moon, Kathaaria and Drowned, there's been nothing but praise after their spectacular live debut at Roadburn last year. After a handful of highly acclaimed and exclusive gigs, we're proud to welcome the band to Norway and Beyond The Gates for the very first time. Expect nothing but sheer doomy brilliance!
//SATAN//
Few bands and albums from the NWOBHM era has stood the test of time as good as Satan and their classic "Court in the Act". But if that wasn't enough, the very same crew are now together again, and after releasing last years perhaps most acclaimed comeback album "Life Sentence", we're very excited to finally have Brian Ross and the rest of his crew on Norwegian soil this year.
//PURSON//
Not a lot of movements have made such an underground impact the over the past years as the proto metal, retro metal or doom rock scene that's been evolving recently. One of the most unique and best acts rising from this, is without doubt England's Purson. The Rise Above outfit is as great and charming as you'd expect, and being voted best new band and best debut album in the Terrorizer readers poll for 2013 was everything but a coincidence. Groovy, baby!
//GRAVE MIASMA//
Abusing Death Metal as an output of explorations into the Occult, Grave Miasma are loyal to their roots of Goatlord, early Rotting Christ, Mortuary Drape and Immolation whilst displaying a personality missing from much of the underground Death Metal revival. Their storming debut full-length ‘Odori Sepulcrorum’ promises to mark the next stage of the Death Metal evolution. Like vultures feasting on carrion, ‘Odori Sepulcrorum’ will intuitively infect your veins. The record contains an experimental streak with traditional instrumentation and chants utilised to transport the listener towards an endless void. Grave Miasma perform Metal of Death and rebirth.
//NIFELHEIM//
Keep it true, keep it old school. That's the ethos the founding members Hellbutcher and Tyrant has kept for Nifelheim since the inception of this cult act back in 1990. From the demo "Unholy Death" from 1993, Nifelheim has kept the flame of the underground alive with their raw and unpolished thrashing black metal. Albums like "Devil's Force", "Servants of Darkness" and the most recent "Envoy of Lucifer" are all masterpieces in their own right. And not to forget, their high octane live performances are a sight to behold. Nifelheim is no bullshit, no core and no trends. Fuck off!
