PROSCRIPTOR MCGOVERN’S APSÛ Signs With Agonia Records: New Album To Be Announced In Late 2020
Agonia Records today confirms the signing of the new, Texas-based “mythological occult metal” act Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû. The debut/self-titled album’s release date is to be announced in the latter portion of 2020.
When drummer/vocalist Proscriptor (Russ R. Givens) dissolved Absu on January 27th 2020, his main intention was to splinter the 30-year old faction into a renewed songwriting concord. Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû is the obvious by-product of that chemical breakdown and securing the ranks is continuing bassist/vocalist Ezezu and new guitar virtuoso Vaggreaz.
Proscriptor says of the resurgence: “I want people to know that I disbanded Absu to form Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû with underpinning intention, despite the inclusion of my name, as an armorial bearing to pay tribute to the former sanctuary. I do not consider myself the band’s leader, but more of an administrator. I may be an oppressive commissioner, but Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû is an equal, collective unit.”
Proscriptor continues regarding the album’s lyrical approach: “This album is written for those who are curious and unwearied in their quest of arcane knowledge. I have (with vast exertion and detriment of time and space) collected knowledge deemed, in regard to my subject theories of ‘mythological occult metal:’ from Thelemic Magick and The Zos Vel Thanatos Formula to Fractal Ontology and (obviously) Near East Mythology.”
The album is being chronicled at studios around the world with final mixing being handled in Dallas, Texas by J.T. Longoria and mastering by Karl Daniel Lidén in Sweden. The album also features guest appearances from Vorskaath (Zemial), Ross Friedman (Ross The Boss), Jeff Becerra (Possessed), Rune Eriksen (Aura Noir/Vltimas), Alex Colin-Tocquaine (Agressor) and The Dark (Agatus). To assemble the album’s packaging with ten separate portrait illustrations, the band has re-commissioned the expertise of renowned Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak.
Final track listing for “Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû” is:

FROM Rumpelstiltskin Grinder:

When Melissa first joined Absu I had a lot of mixed emotions. I was super happy for her but at the same time I knew it was going to eclipse my own band that I was a part of with her. Even then agreeing to it she felt somewhat guilty and I reassured her that she had all in RG’s blessing and that she’d be crazy not to take the opportunity. For me personally it would’ve been like joining one of my old favorite bands like...maybe Cathedral I guess. Melissa was always a huge fan of Absu. I would’ve done the same thing myself if given such a huge opportunity. Before any of us join bands we spend hours alone practicing our craft and hoping to create or join something successful that either is or aligns with our musical taste that we have acquired.
Since joining Absu though not only did she become such a huge part of the writing process she also started to handle some of the business ends of such as booking their own tours and renting vehicles. All this time Russ from what I understand was having a lot of personal turmoil (family, addiction, arrests). Melissa stood by and helped him through all of that the best she could.
The actual music for Absu’s next album was recorded almost 2 years prior to Melissa coming out. They were still waiting for Russ to finish his vocals.
It is important to understand that Melissa wasn’t just another guitarist for Absu. She was also the main writer of the music, the booking agent, the band shrink and personal friend.
This was a low, despicable, cowardly, and ugly thing to do to someone who did so much for this band. I truly think however that the biggest parts of RUSS’s DECISION for this was A.) he didn’t want to deal with both the positive and negative feedback to having a trans person in his band (which given all the things that she did for him and Absu makes this even more pathetic).... and B.) Russ didn’t want that much of the media attention on someone else in Absu besides him.
I remember seeing this text when it happened. I remember how vulnerable Melissa was and how much this hurt her. I was somewhat surprised by this because I always liked the members of Absu and I thought/assumed they were better than this. Especially with all the things both as band mate and personal friend Melissa was to both of them but especially Russ. Just. Unbelievable... Good luck with your legacy Russ! 👍
