 Since the early 90's Swedish black metal warriors DARK FUNERAL have inverted crosses with their own brand of blasphemous black metal. 

From satanic hymns of destruction to forays into melodic black metal, nothing stops DARK FUNERAL as the do what they want, when they want. 

Here ITP V.022 has DARK FUNERAL'S new release  "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE" on tap to review. 

DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE" kicks off with "NIGHTFALL",  a sick, grim and minimalistic black metal tune, ."NIGHTFALL''S  simplistic riffing flows well within the boundaries of the bands music as blast beats fill in the atmosphere nicely.    

DARK FUNERAL'S "LET THE DEVIL IN" enters with tribal drumming at a mid pace. An ode to darkness, "LET THE DEVIL IN" plods along within melodic black metal atmospheres. 

DARK FUNERAL'S  "WHEN OUR VENGEANCE IS DONE" . returns to true black metal form with blast and hardcore beats and an understated melody. "WHEN OUR VENGEANCE IS DONE" speeds along with simple, but effective chord progressions and a hint of melody. 

DARK FUNERAL'S   "NOSFERATU" enters as classic DARK FUNERAL featuring blast beats, spoken word and dissonant riffs. NOSFERATU"..In both vocal and spoken word approach,  reminds me of a less symphonic DIMMU BORGIR..

DARK FUNERAL'S   "WHEN I'M GONE", a spiritual ballad of sorts with melodic overtones and lyrical content of death and ghostly, haunted ventures. 

DARK FUNERAL'S  "BEYOND THE GRAVE" kicks in with speed and grace. Understated melodic riffs, dance into "BEYOND THE GRAVE" as DARK FUNERAL vocalist "HELJARMA" vocals  blend perfectly into the chaos. 

 DARK FUNERAL'S  "A BEAST TO PRAISE" features dramatic and minimalistic riifs with an excellent drum performance via JAANE JALOMA. 

DARK FUNERAL'S  "LEVIATHAN" is a well written and executed black metal track with melodic post rock influences.  "LEVIATHAN grows on you with repeated listens..

DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE" closes with the title track as the tune is ferocious .in scope with some black and roll riff changes... 

DARK FUNERAL have endured many lineup changes as the band now feature new drummer JAANE JALOMA. and bassist "ADRA MELEK". 

In fact,  DARK FUNERAL'S various lineup changes have lead to gaps in releases and over all inconsistency. 

With DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE", the band doesn't experiment or go beyond the borders of black metal.  DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE" is just no frills black metal with a touch of melody. 

Although  DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE", is a varied release, many of the riffs sound the same with little or no deviation from the bands standard...

Perhaps DARK FUNERAL could up the ante on songwriting. 

However, DARK FUNERAL'S lyrical content have matured past blasphemy and into relatable issues as the haunted spirit told in "WHEN I'M GONE" and a nod to vampires in "NOSFERATU".  

 DARK FUNERAL'S "WE ARE THE APOCALYPSE" features stellar musicianship specifically within the drummer, audible vocalist and crystal clear production.     

 Overall, DARK FUNERAL DARK FUNERAL have been writing blasphemous hymns for over 30 years as the band shows no signs of slowing down. 

It's good to have DARK FUNERAL back. .
