Ahoy, mate..Arise from your slumber, you are at sea, floating on the water..
AHAB are a funeral doom band from GERMANY, and a damn good one.  Germany's AHAB conceptually are obsessed with all of that which revolves around the ocean and sea. AHAB was the tyrannical captain of the Pequod who is driven by a maniacal desire to kill MOBY DICK the whale. 

Here ITP V.023 has AHAB'S new release "THE CORAL TOMBS" on tap to review. 

 AHAB'S: "THE CORAL TOMBS" kicks off with "PROF. ARRONAX DESCENT INTO VAST OCEANS" as the track kicks of heavy and ominous. About a minute into "PROF. ARRONAX DESCENT INTO VAST OCEANS" hits a softer tone with clean vocals and light instrumentation segueing into classic funeral doom.

 

AHAB'S  "COLOSSUS OF THE LIQUID GRAVES" is awesome death, doom featuring great death metal and clean vocal transitions sparked by a bluesy monster riff. "COLOSSUS OF THE LIQUID GRAVES"sludgy death doom is complimented by good songwriting. 

AHAB'S "MOBILIS IN MOBILI" enters with melodic guitar leads, light keyboards that sound like bells, and after a minute, sheer heaviness with malevolent guitar riffs. a clam washes over "MOBILIS IN MOBILI" as the track segues into a softer, PINK FLOYD transition before the full band comes in with clean then death vocals. 

AHAB'S  "THE SEA AS A DESERT", enters with ambient strummed guitar as the full band plows in with death metal and clean vocals. "THE SEA AS A DESERT" alternates between beautiful funeral doom with well sung clean vocals and mid paced death doom. Mid way through "THE SEA AS A DESERT", the band experiment with softer tones, just clean vocals and a lightly strummed guitar before seguing into funeral doom... . .  . . 

AHAB'S "A CORAL TOMB" invokes an ominous and soft beginning, a mesmerizing, bluesy lullaby for the ages. Within 8 minutes, AHAB'S "A CORAL TOMB" gets heavier, wading deep waters for a beautiful nautical anthem. .

AHAB'S  "AEGRI SOMNIA" combines monster riffs with clean and death vocals, as unpredictable as the Sea itself, as beautiful as the sun setting over the waves. 

.AHAB'S "THE CORAL TOMBS" closes with "THE MAELSTROM" as the track enters with  jazzy drumming, melodic guitar and soaring, awesome clean vocals...THE MAELSTROM" segues into riff changes complimented by a duet of death and clean vocals. 

 .AHAB'S "THE CORAL TOMBS" weaves heavier tones with monster riffs and slower, soft contemplation. AHAB'S "THE CORAL TOMBS is an unpredictable is the ocean seguing melody with intense death metal vocals and beautiful clean singing. 

AHAB'S atmospheric ventures are a soundtrack to aquatic sea life as you can almost hear the waves crashing onto the ship and the fear of a shipwreck. 

 "AEGRI SOMNIA" ,  "THE MAELSTROM"  "COLOSSUS OF THE LIQUID GRAVES" are my favorite tracks from AHABS excellent "THE CORAL TOMBS" as the release melds melody with monster riffs and in depth atmospherics. .  . .
