ITP V.023 ONLY ONE PER COFFIN: R.I.P. TINA TURNER

Legendary R and B, pop singer TINA TURNER passed away 5/24/2023 from intestinal cancer.

TINA TURNER left an abusive relationship with band mate IKE TURNER (IKE AND TINA TURNER) in the 70's and started a solo career. TINA TURNER'S career was revived in the early 80's with the release of her solo album "PRIVATE DANCER" as that release was a chart topping multiple Grammy winner.

TINA TURNER wrote a best selling biography "I, TINA" as her life story is the subjects of a musical, film and documentary...

 FROM GEEZER BUTLER (BLACK SABBATH):

Sad to hear of Tina Turner passing. I saw her on her first major tour, supporting The Rolling Stones at Birmingham Odeon on 1966 & became an instant fan. RIP

FROM OPETH:

”It stings! Goodbye Tina! The lovely force of nature that was Tina Turner. Irreplaceable. Iconic. Fantastic! In her place now a undeniable void. Tinas music goes back to my (everyones?) childhood. She was just ”there” always, and it stings she’s not anymore. Her passing is a threat to my inner child! It’s hard to put words to my thoughts, but I think you know what I mean. OK! Her musical catalogue is/was a beast of sorts. Countless classics ranging over 4 decades or so? Some of my favorites: ”We don’t need another hero”. My close friend Tobias Forge had the good taste of covering this recently, and I’m jealous I didn’t see it first! Note to self: Time to revisit ”Mad Max -Thunderdome”? ”What’s love got to do with it”. Amazing, and a stark, touching film too! ”Goldeneye”! Yep, of course I’m a James Bond fan too! My favorite, however, is the somewhat overlooked ”It’s only love”. That duet with Bryan Adams (Hello Bryan!!). Both of them sing their asses off! Who sings like that these days? And it’s a tune bordering on Heavy Metal too! I’ve mimed to this (I played the part of both Tina and Bryan!) in front of the mirror a thousands times. I was 10 years old then, but I could do it still! These mentioned are ”merely" 80’s songs. At the moment I’m listening to her and Ike’s album ”The hunter” from 1970. It’s so fucking good!! There’s so much more to discover, and better late than never, people! Anna Mae - Tina, you’re certainly the queen of rock! Always! Thank you!
And then we have…had…Pete Brown. That singer/poet/madman (Musically!). Of course this man wrote many a Cream lyric. You don’t have to be ”initiated” to know ”Sunshine of your love” and ”White room”? Through my collecting I stumbled upon his own projects, the Battered Ornaments and Piblokto! Horrendously hard to find on original vinyl. It’s super eclectic and the opposite to easy-listening. However, there’s a song on ”Thousands on a raft” from 1970 called ”Station song platform two”. It could be in a loop throughout the rest of my life. What a lovely lullaby-esque quality it has. And the finest (THE finest!) presentation of a strings-equipped M400 Mellotron I have ever heard. How it slowly sneaks into the production. Sublime! On top of this, Brown wrote the lyrics (all of them?) to the album ”Out of the storm” by Jack Bruce from 1974. Nicklas Barker from Anekdoten sold this record to me with the words: ”It includes the best song ever written!”. I bought it, and the song in question, ”One” certainly is a little masterpiece. And the album is a corker! I have 4-5 copies of it now. ”One” is truly great, but the best (rock) song in the world is ”A day in the life” by the fab four. Everyone knows that!!?? Anyways, I digress. Thank you, Pete Brown. For your clever songs. Your clever words. For your influence."

FROM HALOCAUSTO CANIBAL:

Simply the best
It's uncommon for us as a band to make any kind of statement regarding the passing of mainstream celebrities.
This time, we feel it close to home. For some of us, Tina Turner was one, if not the first, earliest music we have heard and her influence on the whole rock scene is nothing short of remarkable. We could write pages of episodes we lived as a band when she was our sound track. From endless hours on the road, to crazy nights after gigs, she could be heard pumping through the speakers.
Although she will be missed, she will always be a hit amongst the cannibal horde and find her way out of the thunderdome.
Long live the queen of rock and roll!

FROM ROB HALFORD:
“thanks for everything Tina you’re irreplaceable”🀘🏻

 FROM DAVID BOWIE ESTATE:

TINA TURNER DIES AGED 83
“I will see you in the sky tonight...”
Sad to hear of the passing of Tina Turner, the legendary singer whose career dated back to 1960 with the release of her first recording: A Fool in Love as Ike and Tina Turner.
In a statement released this evening, her publicist Bernard Doherty said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
Bowie fans will be aware of the duet she recorded with David for the title track of 1984’s Tonight LP. The Bowie/Iggy Pop penned track was released as a single later that year.
On 23rd March, 1985, at a Tina Turner concert at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in the UK, Bowie performed the song live with Tina along with a section of the Chris Montez hit, Let’s Dance, segueing into Bowie’s song of the same name.
This live duet of Tonight was released as a single becoming a #1 hit in the Netherlands.
We’ll finish with some words Tina said to The Guardian newspaper in 2020 that despite having some serious health problems, the last 10 years of her life had embodied her ideal vision of happiness.
“True and lasting happiness comes from having an unshakeable, hopeful spirit that can shine, no matter what,” she said. “That’s what I’ve achieved, and it is my greatest wish to help others become truly happy as well.”

FROM BLACK ROCK COALITION:

The Black Rock Coalition sends out its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and fans of Anna Mae Bullock, better known to the world as Tina Turner.
Tina’s influence on the Black Rock Coalition - and to the world of rock n roll - cannot be, under any circumstances, understated. When you heard the deep in the bowels, gritty holler in 1960’s ‘A Fool In Love’, she brought blues and R&B to the new level.
The Ike & Tina Turner Revue laid the blueprint of how a live, rock n roll show should look, and more importantly, how it should sound. It was sensual, sexy, raw, hitting you right between the eyes and square in the crotch, with Tina’s voice at the eye of this musical hurricane.
It was during her stint with Ike & Tina that she recorded three of the most seminal songs in rock n roll history: 1966’s ‘River Deep, Mountain High’, which turned love and longing to operatic heights; ‘Proud Mary’, which starts with a spoken word intro that gives you chills (‘You see, we never, ever, do ANYTHING nice and easy….we always do it nice…and rough’) that segues a Saturday night meets Sunday morning cover that blows away the original; and the semi-autobiographical ‘Nutbush City Limits’, where Tina makes it plain over a proto DIY, near punk arrangement.
After the much publicized, well documented split from Ike - and 8 years in musical purgatory - Tina Turner defies racism, ageism, sexism and all other isms with 1984’s multi-platinum Private Dancer, re-asserting herself as The Queen Of Rock n Roll. It was a title she would carry until her final days.
A musical force, a mother, best selling author, and all around badass, Tina Turner laid the groundwork for which many of peers - past, present and future - are walking on.
Rest easy Queen…

FROM OPRAH WINFREY:

I started out as a fan of Tina Turner, then a full-on groupie, following her from show to show around the country, and then, eventually, we became real friends. She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who contained a magnitude of inner strength that grew throughout her life. She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed.
Once she claimed her freedom from years of domestic abuse, her life became a clarion call for triumph. I’m grateful for her courage, for showing us what victory looks like wearing Manolo’s and a leather miniskirt. She once shared with me that when her time came to leave this earth, she would not be afraid, but excited and curious. Because she had learned how to LIVE surrounded by her beloved husband, Erwin, and friends. I am a better woman, a better human, because her life touched mine. She was indeed simply the best.

FROM NANCY WILSON (HEART):

The world will miss this icon. The first woman ever on the cover of @rollingstone . A rock powerhouse like no other singer that will ever live.
She invented a fearless muscular style all her own that shaped the cultural image of women forever.
Thank you Tina.
Rest in power.

FROM ANGRA:

oday we lost the queen of Rock, Tina Turner. Rest In Peace and thank you for all the things you did for the Rock ‘n’ Roll
πŸ‡§πŸ‡· Hoje perdemos a rainha do Rock, Tina Turner. Descanse em paz e obrigado por tudo que vocΓͺ fez pelo Rock N Roll

FROM THE WHO:

“Sad to hear we have lost Tina Turner. She had been ill for a long time, and struggling to stay in touch with old friends. She will have some peace now.
An astonishing performer, and astounding singer, she was also an R&B groundbreaker. We don’t want to say too much about Ike Turner – her abusive husband – but her early records with him were simply out of this world. She always took flight when she worked with him, leaving him like a fifth wheel, chipping away at his basic riffs. When she was finally free of him her work ascended to new, even higher heights. It didn’t seem possible.
If you ever had the privilege of seeing Tina perform live you will know how utterly scary she could be. She was an immense presence. A female Little Richard. She seemed like a giant: shaking, sexual, physical and stunningly beautiful. In the flesh she was fragile, vulnerable and a truly sweet and empathetic person.
She was of course my Acid Queen in the Tommy movie, and it is often my job to sing that song with The Who, so she always comes into my mind. It isn’t easy to deal with. The song is about abuse at the hands of an evil woman. How she turned that song on its head! All the anger of her years as a victim exploded into fire and bluster and a magnificent and crazy cameo role that will always stay with me.
She has been in my mind for the last ten years, I kept meaning to track her down, and see how she was. I truly thought she would live forever.”
Pete Townshend
"What a singer! What a performer! What a life! A true original artist, and simply the best.”
