ITP V.020 ONLY ONE PER COFFIN: R.I.P. SEAN REINERT (DRUMMER FOR DEATH and CYNIC)

SEAN REINERT, former drummer of Florida, U.S.A. progressive, technical death metal warriors CYNIC has died at 48.

SEAN REINERT was found unresponsive in his apartment Friday 1/24/2020, no cause of death has been revealed.

SEAN REINERT was the drummer for CYNIC up to 2015.

SEAN REINERT was also the drummer for Florida death metal legends DEATH (1991-92) as he recorded on the bands influential release "HUMAN", unleashed 10/22/1991 via RELATIVITY RECORDS.

FROM TOM AND PATTI (SEAN REINERT'S HUSBAND AND SISTER):

I’m broken. As many of you now know, my husband Sean passed away last night. Some of you in the inner circle I was able to reach via phone last night and this morning to try to let you know what happened before it spread across social media. For those I couldn’t reach to tell you myself I’m sorry.
I’m still trying to put together the events of the last 24 hours. After coming home from work last night I found Sean unresponsive on the floor, I administered CPR with the assistance of the 911 operator and he was taken to a local hospital via ambulance. There is no cause of death and an autopsy will be performed. Sean and I just completed our yearly physicals about 3 weeks ago and we were both in good health. Sean did not have any sort of drug abuse issues and I’m still in a state of disbelief. I can’t begin to comprehend how my life and the lives of Seans close friends and family have just been shattered.
That’s about all I’d like to share at this point. It feels strange to even have to make this post over such a private matter but I understand Sean was a public figure and beloved by many around the world. For myself, Seans family and close friends I ask that you please give us time to grieve. The fans he adored so much lost an influence and phenomenal drummer. Some of us lost our Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle and Best Friend.
Thank You,
-Tom & Patti (Seans husband and Seans sister)

FROM PAUL MASVIDAL (CYNIC VOCALIST/GUITARIST):

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of one of my oldest friends. We were karmic brothers, connected by something beyond both of us. So many memories have been flooding my heart and mind. From the moment I first met Sean in junior high school, I knew we had a connection. His gifts were beyond measure, and I’m grateful that we were able to make music together. In the end, all that remains is love, and that’s what I have for Sean. There will never be another one like him. Peace to his family and all of his fans around the world. Listen to Sean play his drums and hear his heart sing.

FROM ASGEIR MICKELSON:

FROM LAST RITES:
Sean Reinert's drumming on 'Human' was, in a word, inhuman. What a gamechanger. The man was an absolute paragon behind the kit, and he has been taken from this earth too soon. 'Human' and 'Focus' on repeat. R.I.P.

FROM CATTLE DECAPITATION:

We send our condolences to the family and friends of Sean Reinert, one of the biggest game changers and musicians in the metal universe.

FROM BLEAK FLESH:

FAREWELL Sean! You set the bar for Progressive Death Metal drumming bringing different influences to the game, super creative and incredible musician. Our songs wouldn't be the same without your contributions to music. Give a listen to Human and Cynic today... RIP Master!
ADIÓS SEAN! Tu estableciste un estándar para la batería Death Metal Progresiva incorporando distintas influencias, un músico increíble y creativo. Nuestras canciones no serían lo mismo sin tus aportes a la música. Escuchen Human y Cynic hoy.... RIP Master!

Rest in Peace Sean Reinert, its no secret our sound is influenced heavily by Cynic and the Human Era of Death so this new hits our camp especially hard. Condolences to all the friends and family of Sean, our music will always honor his contributions to death metal, he showed us exactly how it's done, thank you Sean!!

FROM ANGEROT:

We lost another icon. Sean was a pioneer and an inspiration to virtually ever drummer in modern extreme music. He proved you can blend, invent and push boundaries. His legend is forward etched into the history of metal music. You will be missed.
Rest in Power.

FROM AKURION:

Sad day losing Sean Reinert RIP.

FROM LAPETUS:

Don’t know if there’s a modern metal musician alive who wasn’t, in some way, shape, or form influenced by Death or Cynic. Jordan and I were both heavily into Death as impressionable twenty-somethings - and as for me, personally, Traced In Air is one of my all-time favorite records.
You have given many beautiful things to the world, Mr. Reinert. Rest in peace.

FROM ODIOUS MORTEM:

Lost 2 of the most influential drummers in 2 weeks. Devastating loss. Rest In Peace Neil and Sean.

FROM ATHEIST:

Atheist wish to collectively send condolences to the family of Sean Reinert. We were friends since 1989/90 Easily one of the most incredible drummers the game has ever seen. We are all deeply saddened today by this news!

FROM GRUESOME:

There is death metal BEFORE Sean and there there's EVERYTHING after HUMAN. We all know his contributions to drumming in the metal community. Sean was even directly responsible in part for GRUESOME's existence. What I want you all to know is who Sean Reinert was as a person. He was my best friend on earth...my greatest cheerleader and the person who's gotten me through the worst things in life. Everyone who's ever met him and hung out with him has experienced Sean...he was always genuine and kind. He also absolutely loved drums and NEVER lost that almost child like enthusiasm for it...and that would help keep it alive in me. For years he thought that people had forgotten about him and the was old news. I remember us going to our first Namm show together back in 2007. Driving there I'm like "dude, everyone's gonna shit when they meet you!" Which he thought was ludicrous! Not 3 min after we arrived at the Hilton after party I remember Jason Bittner running up to him "Dude if I had a dollar for every time I've TRIED to play your stuff?!!" It made me so happy to see his face! Yet he NEVER lost humility and practiced constantly. So please listen to some classic Reinert jams, tell stories of how he's affected your life and let's celebrate the beautiful HUMAN and of course musician that Sean Reinert was. On behalf of Robin who's known Sean since their teens, Daniel and Matt whom have known him for years and myself...thank you Sean Reinert, we will ALWAYS love you brother.
Gus Rios

FROM IAN CHRISTIE (WRITER/AUTHOR):

For everyone who followed your early love of Neil Peart and Rush to the logical progression with Sean Reinert's playing in Death and Cynic... it's a sad night.

FROM 20 BUCK SPIN (RECORD LABEL):

CYNIC live in Berkeley 1994. 17 year old me was in the crowd somewhere, too young to appreciate what CYNIC were doing at the time. I was there for Cannibal Corpse and Sinister primarily. Later came to regret my teenage ignorance dismissing them as weak.

FROM SEAN MALONE (CYNIC):

From Sean Malone:
I was luckier than most. Complete musical trust—especially between a bassist and a drummer—is a rare and precious thing. Rare, because it’s not something you find by looking for it. Precious, because some may go an entire lifetime without ever having experienced it. But I was luckier than most. Sean offered his trust during every rehearsal, every recording, and every performance we ever did, and it’s likely that I’ll never experience the same again. The truth is that we’re all lucky—lucky to have been alive while Sean Reinert was making music.

FROM WINTERFALL:

Another one of our favorite musicians gone too soon... @Death and Cynic are huge influences on us.
RIP Sean Reinert

FROM INFREE RECORDS:

This is really getting surreal another great musician .

FROM VREID:
R.I.P Sean. One of the most important albums ever.

FROM DAMIM:
 Another titan departs.

FROM ANDREW HAUG RADIO:

What a pioneer & innovator that was thee Sean Reinert!
Still shocked by this news, we feel its necessary to celebrate some of his amazing works.
Today @1pm aedt, we'l be playing 2 incredible records that displayed Sean's brilliance! Death (Official) HUMAN (1991) & Cynic FOCUS (1993). Share your thoughts! 🤘💔🥁🙏

FROM TRANSCENDING RECORDS:

We've lost one of the greats. This is absolutely devastating news. I remember Sean as one of the first drummers I ever heard. I mean, I'd heard plenty of drummers prior to him, but they were just beat keepers. I paid attention to the guitars and the singing, drums were just there keeping things together. But when I heard Sean's work in Death and Cynic, I heard drums like I'd never heard them before. His talent and creativity transcended metal. A true original. RIP Sean and condolences to all those that new him.

FROM HEAVY NEW YORK:

RIP to a drumming legend\m/ Horns up for you today Sean \m/ \m/

FROM A FLOCK NAMED MURDER:

Another taken too soon. Thank you for the inspiration Sean Reinert.

FROM AFRICAN METAL:
 REST IN PEACE SEAN REINERT

Legendary drummer for CYNIC and DEATH

 FROM DIRK VERBEUREN (MEGADETH):

The world lost a true legend and a beautiful soul. Sean Reinert's innovative, dynamic, soulful playing on "Human" and "Focus" completely changed the game of metal drumming. As a teenager, I went out and bought my first splash cymbal after hearing Sean use his splashes so beautifully. No one played like him and to many, including myself, Sean is the ultimate reference when it comes to creativity and swing in metal drumming. As a person, Sean was jovial, kind-hearted, thoughtful and always ready to crack a joke or tell a hilarious story. Through his heartfelt laughs during the many game/movie nights my wife and I shared together with him and his husband Tom, or his big hugs when it was time to head home to take care of his cats, Sean's warm presence filled the room in the best possible way. It's so hard to fathom that he's gone... We spoke just a few weeks ago and he sounded as happy as ever. My heart goes out to Tom as well as Sean's family, friends, bandmates and fans. We will miss you so much, Sean... Rest in peace, brother, and thank you for everything. 💔

FROM JASON BITTNER (OVERKILL DRUMMER):

I'm trying to really find all the words to sum the last week or so up, just as we were starting to mend from Neil, this happens.....I can't explain just how much Sean meant to all of us in the metal community, and the drumming community alone - this guy was definitely NOT "just a metal drummer". read all the posts about him and you will know. Neil influenced all of us to be play more fills and be experimental, and Sean took it to the Nth degree with everyone he played with, and he became a "Neil Peart" type influence for the metal world. Go back and look at my first Modern Drummer feature - two of my Top 10 drumming albums are his - Death "Human", and Cynic's "Focus". Absolute stellar performances, unplayable by most of us mere mortals..........I'm still trying. But on top of all this Sean was an awesome, awesome guy - just a laugh riot to hang out with.
There's a contingent of people over the last decade who have become the "Sickdrummer Magazine family/clique/gang" at NAMM, - Anton Hefele, Ian Macdonald, Derek Roddy, Gus Rios, Forrest Robinson, Brian Zink, myself, Tim Yeung, Matt Thompson, and a rotating cast of characters depending on the year - but there was always ONE GUY we were hoping was "coming to the show this year", and that was Sean Landon Reinert - he was just that respected and loved by us, and by the drumming world
I was lucky enough to become friends with him back in probably 2005/6, and we always stayed in contact, and saw each other when the tour or NAMM permitted, or if I was just in CA for other business, we always made it a point to hang if possible - the last time I saw him was when he came to see me play in Flotsam and Jetsam at the Whiskey in LA. We had just drove in all night from AZ,no sleep, I was TMing too, and just exhausted by time I took the stage - the only thing that was keeping me going was the fact of "dude, Sean is watching, you BETTER bring it!" I did to my best ability, and he told me so after the show......"dude you kicked ass" - I still think he was just being nice!! RIP Sean - I hope you're up there trading 7's with "The Professor" right now - or at least drinking some of his Macallan!! We all love and miss you already!!!!

FROM MIKE PORTNOY:

FROM SLAUGHTERHOUSE RECORDS:

Legendary drummer has passed on...

FROM MICHAEL AMOTT (ARCH ENEMY, FORMALLY OF CARCASS):

FROM JUSTIN MCKINNEY (THE ZENITH PASSAGE, FORMALLY OF THE FACELESS):

  FROM GOROD:

We are truly sad to hear about the loss of Sean Reinert.
Cynic and Death have always been huge influences for Gorod.
All our thoughts go to his family and friends.
Let us keep listening to Sean's music and peace to all!

FROM VOLUME BRUTAL ASSOCIATION:

took two big mandals thanks to Sean: in 1991 with " human " of death and in 1993 with " focus " of cynic, which I had the chance to see live in 2008 in a small club.
This guy was for me one of the best drummers of this kind, a kind of Neil Peart from death metal.
RIP drum god

FROM SWINE OVERLORD:

Don’t want to sound like another echo in this torrent of noise... but I felt it necessary to take a moment to a show our appreciation for the now late Sean Reinert... His playing changed how I see. how I hear, and how I make music. Without his art we may have never been driven to pursue the direction we started with Entheogenesis. Rest In Peace, friend.

FROM OPETH:

Like many before me, we too want to give our condolences to the family and friends of Sean Reinert. His passing came as a big surprise and shock to us. We toured together with Cynic in the past, as some of you might know. I remember Sean as a great guy with a splendid sense of humour. And a monster of a drummer! Very sad to hear about his passing! The last few weeks has seen a lot of tragic losses in the music world. Of course I also want to mention Neil Peart. I didn’t know him personally, and I never met him but his influence on rock music cannot be understated, which is why I, on behalf of the band, want to pay our respects and give our condolences to the people close to him.' - Mikae

FROM PROPAGANDHI:

We are extremely saddened to hear of passing of three of our drum heroes this week. Neil Peart from Rush, Sean Reinert from Death and Cynic and Reed Mullen from C.O.C.
All three were innovative and amazing and will be greatly missed. They all left behind an extreme imprint on our band.
At some point in time our drummer Jord figured out how to play every one of those crazy drum rolls from C.O.C.’s tune ‘Technocracy’, we played it all the time and recorded it and once we went all the way to play a single show in Chicago just because C.O.C. was playing the next night. Anyway, Rest In Peace Neil, Sean and Reed, thanks for everything. Time is getting shorter for all of us.
Here’s Reed drumming like a maniac:

More tributes later.
Thanks-Stay Metal, Stay Brutal-\m/ -l-
