Since the late 90's, Swedish melodic death metal masters SOILWORK have both pioneered and popularized the melo-death genre.
Despite various lineup changes, SOILWORK have progressed nicely as an accessible extreme metal force to be reckoned with.
Here ITP V.022 has SOILWORK'S new release "OVERGIVENHETEN" on tap to review.
SOILWORK'S "OVERGIVENHETEN" kicks off with the title track as it enters in elegant, acoustic majesty before in morphs into a melodic rager. The tile track from "OVERGIVENHETEN" melds melodic hooks, with heaviness and good songwriting.
SOILWORK'S "NOUS SOMMES LA GUERRE" is a radio friendly "adult contemporary melodic death metal" track with a good clean vocal performance from BJORN "SPEED" STRID.
SOILWORK'S "ELECTRIC AGAIN" is another rager, complete with blast-beats, shouted and clean vocals. "ELECTRIC AGAIN" weaves seamlessly between heavy and melodic with a an awesome catchy chorus.At 2:31, "ELECTRIC AGAIN" segues into a beautiful, soulful violin solo before blasting off into oblivion.
Streamlining to melodic hard rock, SOILWORK'S "VALLEYS OF GLOAM" features excellent clean vocals via STRID. I love the lead,. melodic guitar featured in "VALLEYS OF GLOAM".
SOILWORK'S "IS IT IN YOUR DARKNESS" is another rager featuring blast and hardcore drumming beats. BJORN "SPEED" STRID alternates between harsh and clean vocals as the main riff and guitar solos kick ass.
SOILWORK'S "VULTURES" enters in brutality with blast beats, double bass and definitive riffing. "VULTURES" segues into clean vocals and alternates in pace ending with light piano.
SOILWORK'S "MORGONGAVA/STORMFAGEL" is alight instrumental, a breather smack in the middle of the release featuring guitar and piano.
SOILWORK'S "DEATH, I HEAR YOU CALLING" is a hard rock track, a perfect rocker of a single.
SOILWORK'S "THIS GODLESS UNIVERSE" enters with dramatic piano and segues into classic, melodic death metal with a little violin. "THIS GODLESS UNIVERSE" featuring soaring clean vocals uplifting a booming chorus into a driving rager of a track.
SOILWORK'S "DREAMS OF NOWHERE" segues from classic SOILWORK melodeath to melodic death and roll. "DREAMS OF NOWHERE" should go over well live with yet another great vocal performance via STRID.
SOILWORK'S ."THE EVERLASTING FLAME" is a somber instrumental complete with piano and violin.
SOILWORK'S "GOLGATA" features blackened metal and clean vocals with some catchy prog riffing. "GOLGATA" features some post metal riffing, good guitar solos before the track segues back to the main riff. .
SOILWORK'S "HARVEST SPINE" is a classic melodeath track featuring heavy parts and a booming clean vocal chorus.
SOILWORK'S "OVERGIVENHETEN" closes with "ON THE WINGS OF A GODDESS THROUGH FLAMING SHEETS OF RAIN", at over seven minutes, the longest track on the release... "ON THE WINGS OF A GODDESS THROUGH FLAMING SHEETS OF RAIN" enters in a rage complete with blast and hardcore beats, melodic guitar and soaring clean vocals. "ON THE WINGS OF A GODDESS THROUGH FLAMING SHEETS OF RAIN" morphs into mid pace with a noticeable SLAYER influence on one of the riffs.
"ON THE WINGS OF A GODDESS THROUGH FLAMING SHEETS OF RAIN" gets heavy with rolling thrash riffing, amazing vocals and light keyboard interplay.
SOILWORK have done it again. SOILWORK'S "OVERGIVENHETEN" shows progression with prog, classical, symphonic and hard rock influences.
SOILWORK meld melodic riffs with soaring clean vocals and melo death heaviness.
SOILWORK'S BJORN "SPEED" STRID's clean vocals add an intimate flavor to the bands booming chorus elements.STRID''S clean vocals are so sweet you can get a cavity just by listening to him.
SOILWORK'S "OVERGIVENHETEN" features excellent songwriting and a nice variety in riffing. Also, a few tracks feature a violin, a nice touch.
"OVERGIVENHETEN" translating to "THE SURRENDER".
SOILWORK have always written melo death classic tracks, from "BASTARD CHAIN" to the bands 2022 release "OVERGIVENHETEN"
Tragically, SOILWORK guitarist.DAVID ANDERSSON, passed away 9/14/2022 at 47..
ANDERSSON was responsible for SOILWORK'S progression as he was the band guitarist from 2012 until his untimely death in 2022.
Both SOILWORK fans and the band will miss ANDERSSON'S contributions to music and the melodic death metal genre.
R.I.P. .DAVID ANDERSSON as SOILWORK is the worlds favorite melodic death metal band. .
