German band THE RUINS OF BEVERAST (Alexander Van Meilenwald) .have just dropped another banger of atmospheric, blackened doom worthy of a second review from ITP V.021. 

 

With guitars effects summoning a psychedelic feel , THE RUINS OF BEVERAST kicks off  "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" with the opening track "ROPES INTO EDEN", thrashing out for a mid pace anthem.

At 3:49 , the floor drops out of THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S  "ROPES INTO EDEN", for a trade off of Gregorian chants and lightly sprinkled guitars, as at 6::37  the ritual awakens slowly from its slumber with clean vocals. Finally, at 10:20,  "ROPES INTO EDEN" takes off with black metal vox and double bass drumming and definitive riffing. 

THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "THE TUNDRA SHINES" is the second track featured on "THE THULE GRIMOIRES". "THE TUNDRA SHINES" enters with snare drumming, and some spooky vocals before taking a turn with melodic riffing, and clean vocals. Sludgy riffing with black and clean vocals invoke a dark and psychedelic atmosphere until  "THE TUNDRA SHINES" takes off into a faster momentum of blackened thrash (7:13). .THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "THE TUNDRA SHINES" ends how it started with clean vocals, snare drumming.   

 THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "KROMLEC'H KNELL", employs both black and clean vocals with keyboards, melodic picking and a TYPE O NEGATIVE like doomy atmosphere.for perhaps "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" most accessible track. 

 

 THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "MAMMOTHPOLIS", straddles a fine line between industrial and smooth, psychedelic clean vocals as at 4:50, the track exits a beautiful interlude into melancholy industrial doom.

  THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "ANCHORESS IN FURS", enters with clean native Indian chants and segues into doom rock featuring clean and black metal vocals. I love the simplistic, melodic picking as THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "ANCHORESS IN FURS" invokes beauty in atmospheric darkness. 

  THE RUINS OF BEVERAST'S "POLAR HISS HYSTERIA" is a melodic black and roll banger complete with blast beats. At 3:06  "POLAR HISS HYSTERIA" takes a doomy turn with death metal vox and clean sung vocals then back to raging blackened doom. 

 

 THE RUINS OF BEVERAST closes "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" with the epic "DESERTS TO BIND AND DEFEAT", a slow, beautiful ballad with clean and screamed vocals.  "DESERTS TO BIND AND DEFEAT" employs the dynamic of screamed vocals during the tracks louder passages. At 4:45 into "DESERTS TO BIND AND DEFEAT" comes to a halt with female choral vocals and a run away train of blackened thrash.

At 9:45 "DESERTS TO BIND AND DEFEAT" slows down the raging pace for spoken word segues into a buzzing stillness. 

 

 

 THE RUINS OF BEVERAST  "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" amalgamate blackened doom with sludge and industrial elements via great musicianship. 

Other than the pointless  "ROPES INTO EDEN", "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" is  THE RUINS OF BEVERAST most accessible release to date, toying with Goth rock song structures and never forgetting the bands roots in blackened doom. 

 THE RUINS OF BEVERAST seamlessly weave oppositional dynamics and aren't afraid to experiment outside of  the bands genres cliches making "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" an insightful listen. 

 "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" is at its most tasteful within the gorgeous Goth doom song structures of   "KROMLEC'H KNELL" and "ANCHORESS IN FURS". 

. "THE THULE GRIMOIRES" features THE RUINS OF BEVERAST best musicianship and songwriting to date, the drumming and over all tight playing bring competence to this bands unique musical vision. .
