Paradise Lost 3 - Purgatory Premiere:

We are also very proud and excited to be able to present the European premiere of the long awaited documentary film Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory at the event.

The Paradise Lost films tell the true story of one of the most notorious murder cases in US history which three Arkansas teenagers were charged with the brutal killings of three 8 year old boys, in what's become known as the case of the West Memphis Three. Fraught with accusations of devil worship, allegations of coerced confessions and emotionally charged statements, the trial, and its aftermath, was one of the most sensational of recent times, with many claiming the trio had been wrongly convicted in an atmosphere of Satanic Panic.

The recent release from prison after 18 years of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley meant that the third documentary feature was postponed in order to give the series a definitive ending. Following screenings at the Toronto & New York film festivals the new film will receive it's first European screening at the Nightmare Before Christmas. View a teaser trailer here.

ATP Book Clubs for Nightmare Before Christmas:

Our final piece of event related news involves our Book Club. At each event we ask our curators to pick a group of books to recommend to attendees, and this year we're pleased to be joined by the renowned literary journal Laphams Quarterly who will be running discussions at the event. Lapham's Quarterly sets the story of the past in the frame of the present. Four times a year, the editors choose a question current in the headlines--foreign war, financial panic, the whereabouts of God--and bring answers to it from authors whose powers of observation and expression have passed the test of time. Drawing on sources ranging from the ancient world to last month's New Yorker, the editors reconstruct the backstory to today's events, which are rarely afforded any opportunity for real context in the modern media. The book lists picked by our curators are as follows...

Picked by Caribou -

Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto - Stewart Brand (picked by Ryan)
Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace (picked by Dan)
Independent People - Halldor Laxness (picked by Brad)
City Of Quartz - Mike Davis (picked by John)

Picked by Battles -

Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs - Chuck Klosterman
Decoded - Jay-Z
Puppetry of the Penis; The Ancient Australian art of Genital Origami - Simon Morley & David Friend
The Toon - Roger Hutchinson
Visit from the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egan

Picked by Les Savy Fav -

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy (picked by Andrew)
Love In The Ruins - Walker Percy (picked by Harrison)
Me Talk Pretty One Day - David Sedaris (picked by Syd)
Tree Of Smoke - Denis Johnson (picked by Seth)
Sixty Stories - Donald Barthelme (picked by Tim)

Lapham's Quarterly will run discussions on Visit From The Goon Squad and Blood Meridian on Saturday 10th December and on City Of Quartz on Sunday 11th December. To sign up for the discussion or to get more info email atpbookclub@gmail.com. For full info on all of the books visit this page.
