ITP V.012 EDITORS NOTE: ITP V.012's author, for the record is an atheist, (Some religions have not been very supportive of Gays, Metal, women's reproductive rights and medical science) although I respect others rights to choose religion, philosophies, or to be atheist or agnostic, as I'm not a Satanist either. Is black metal redefining it's thematic identity, or is it not black metal at all, better known as "UNBLACK METAL". Chances are, if a Christian band is not defined by pro god lyrics, and the music is good, I might listen. I define a band by style not always religion as I enjoyed industrial act ARGYLE PARK/CIRCLE OF DUST now morphed into the CELLDWELLER project (Scott Albert- "Klaytons" project) back in the 90's as there was no pretense to religious lyrics. Perhaps the only distinction between NS Black Metal (National Socialist Black Metal-Nazi's) and UNBLACK METAL is NSBM's more anti religious lyrical themes, the more far right wing, the less of a distinction between nazi's and religious right wing extremists, there fore more alienating. Political and religiously charged far right lyrical themes in UNBLACK METAL would be just as alienating to ITP's author as National Socialist black metal, and I do make a distinction between the art and the artist (lyrical themes). ITP's author prefers the ambient DSBM (Depressive, Suicidal, Black Metal) scene a musical sibling of doom and funeral doom..
Of course I had to invert the cross, unnoficial ITP V.012 secondary logo. lmao.
METALUNDERGROUND NEWS has reported that Christian bands are popping up in the U.S. extreme metal scene, looking and sounding like KVLT, first and second wave black metal featuring very Christian lyrics there fore, UNBLACK METAL:
FROM METAL UNDERGROUND.COM:
Each week with Unearthing the Metal Underground we take a look at quality underground bands in an attempt to spread the word of lesser known acts. This week we're diving into a divisive and controversial subject: Christian "unblack" metal. Also known as "white metal" or "holy unblack metal," the genre twists the standard Satanic or anti-religious themes and instead presents a pro-Christian worldview.
Say the phrase "Christian black metal" to the average metal head and you're likely to be met with a confused giggle or a baffled comparison to Jewish Nazi metal bands, but believe it or not there is a thriving religious black metal scene. While many of the black metal legions may see Christian lyrical themes as an irreconcilable contradiction, there are quite a few unblack bands with music every bit as dark and menacing as anything from the likes of Mayhem or Dimmu Borgir.
As a companion to this look into three unblack metal bands, we also have an editorial dealing with the subject of Christianity in black metal:
