ITP V.012: THE ART OF DANCE: PART 8: CROWD SURGES

ITP V.012 EDITORS NOTE:  Regarding ITP V.012 THE ART OF DANCE: PART 8: CROWD SURGES, ITP warns you, there are some graphic images in both video and still picture format of how SELFISH HUMANITY IS, and yes, it IS scary, as un controlled crowd surges are one of the absolute WORST forms of DEATH.
More so than metal, BLACK FRIDAY and selfish sports fans are perhaps the worst culprits of DEADLY CROWD SURGES.

ITP V.012 sends a R.I.P. to all those affected by crowd surge/ crowd control related injuries and tragedies.

Thanks to all on YOU TUBE for sharing insight on these tragic events and thanks to WIKEPEDIA for the info.

ITP V.012 is BACK with the monthly news feature THE ART OF DANCE: CROWD SURGES. ITP: THE ART OF DANCE is a monthly news feature chronicling dance trends in metal, hardcore and underground music with insight on mosh pit culture.
ITP V.012 THE ART OF DANCE features a VLOG on the issue of crowd control regarding CROWD SURGES.

CROWD SURGES, are a human crush of a mass crowd at a gathering. CROWD SURGES can happen at any event, musical, sporting, political, malls, Black Friday sales,  ect.

CROWD SURGES, usually at SRO (Standing Room Only events) are when an event or area is overly packed with people, disproportionate to the size of the venue, stadium, club, or space. In the context of CROWD SURGES, too many people are situated in one area, to the point of suffocation, as the crowd is unable to move (lack of space), and are crushed against barricades, walls and from the weight of others. During the most dangerous crowd surges, many people fall, and are crushed beneath the crowd, to never get up again.
CROWD SURGES, while not always a bad connotation, can be potentially dangerous regarding unexpected movements of a mass percentage of a crowd as this is NOT always in the context of moshing.. Humans don't have eyes in the back of their heads, if 500/ 5, 000 people BEHIND you start pushing, rushing the area and moving, disproportionate to the rest of the crowd, people can be knocked over, injured or/and crushed to death.

CROWD SURGES HAPPEN WHEN:

*GATE CRASHERS: At events, forming a bigger crowd than anticipated, there fore the event is dangerously over crowded.
* A PROMOTER over sells (tickets to an event disproportionate) to the size or space of the venue, over capacity, as this is rare due to venue and club, capacity laws.
*BAD SOUND SYSTEMS: When the sound at a musical event sucks, you guessed it, the gut level instinct of fans is to move closer to the stage as to hear the music, therefore the crush of people within 50 yards from the packed stage results in a dangerous tragedy.
*FANS SUPPORTING CELEBRITY/MUSICIAN-CROWD SURFERS; If you're a musician or a celebrity, crowd surfing is awesome and you love to be supported by fans, as you would never think your presence can cause a dangerous crowd surge of fans crushing each other to get close to you.
*POORLY TRAINED SECURITY: Lack of security or V and T security, lack of barricades, lack of lines and lack of over all structure to an event can cause chaos if security can't get to injured fans during crowd surges, specifically in enclosed areas.
ONE DOOR, TOO MANY PEOPLE RUSHING TO GET IN OR OUT
*SELFISH FANS/CUSTOMERS: Cutting lines, trying to get to close to the stage, too many fans rushing an area at once.
LOOK UNDERNEATH YOU, someone may lay on the ground trampled,  injured and dead.
* A FEW SECONDS BEFORE A MOSH PIT OPENS UP: A little resistance from non moshers can cause a quick, and mostly harmless crowd surge, IN OR OUT, get out the way of the pit.
*FLASH MOBS-While fun, and your right to freedom (at least here in the USA) of assembly, if out of control and not organized, can cause awful crowd surges to the uninitiated.
*HUMANS TRAPPED AGAINST THE FENCE/BARRICADES/WALLS and CONFINED SPACES: The most horrid tragedy is when human bodies are trapped between a fence, barricade or wall vs. the crush of hundreds or thousands of surging people resulting in a deadly crush. When crowd barricades break, the "domino effect" of fans falling over and trampling can cause injury as well.
*DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE: Drunken hooligans are NO fun, as they push and run over others, selfish, rowdy fans.

* RESULT OF DEADLY CROWD SURGES: "Died of compressive asphyxia while standing":

FROM WIKEPEDIA:
In fatal crowd disasters, compressive asphyxia from being crushed against the crowd causes the large part of the deaths, rather than blunt trauma from trampling.

*OVERCROWDING: Event over crowding is the fault of promoters, venue security, management, staff and selfish people. Yes, all are legally liable.

FROM RNMOBILER REPORTER:&_________________________________________
HOW TO AVOID AND WHAT TO DO DURING CROWD SURGES:

*INDOORS:  Make a mental note, KNOW where the exits are, alternative exits in the venue/club. Most credible venue/club websites have a layout of the club and check for fire exit maps. Check out door festival site maps for entrance, and alternative exits
*EVERYONE HOLD HANDS: Sounds cheesy, you're all smaller if you lock arms even with someone you don't know, and it makes a few inches of space for others, cooperate: Lock arms with others, and move AWAY from the crowd surge, there is STRENGTH IN NUMBERS.
*If you've fallen during a crowd surge, sit in fetal position with hands over head and use any opportunity to get up.

*Experienced moshers should KNOW this, if someone is fallen, give them a hand up, if someone whom has fallen and is injured call it out, and form, a human/wall barricade and get that person to safety, heroic actions can go a long way. Calling 911 if a fan is unconscious is a good idea, take the middle man and security out of the equation, promoters like to cover casualties up.
Again, experienced moshers should KNOW this-use your elbows arms and hands to create space between your self and others and feet spread out, don't FALL DOWN. Football players, know this via the "swim move" and martial artists know this: use your hands not to push, but to get an inch of leverage and walk to the edge of the crowd.
*Crowd surfing should be a household term: If you're injured, beckon the crowd to crowd surf you to safety, don't wait to you pass out, GET OUT!  We understand that not all musical, sporting events feature crowd surfing, as knowledge of this could come in handy. COOPERATE: Form a human barricade and use a packed crowd surge, (preferably non moving crowd) to your advantage and crowd surf an injured person or your self to safety.
* Stay on the EDGE, or BEHIND the crowd and NOT in the middle. DO NOT stand against walls and barricades at over crowded events .
*Contrary to "popular" belief, situating your self in front of a stage, barricade, door, or wall is the WORST place to be at an event or in a crowd, you could be crushed in packed crowd surges.
* Do NOT run, walk.
* Big  screens means you can see the action and bands on stage from 200 yards away, no crowd surge from further away.
*Sporting events are the ultimate fan experience and give your fave team an emotional boost. However, specifically play off and championship games should be PUBLICLY TELEVISED as there is PAY PER VIEW. Watching a sporting event in your home with friends or in bar with like wise fans is just as fun as being there.
*During crowd surges, the crowd moves in waves, YOU should shuffle and move diagonally, or away from the force of pushing. If the crowd surges forward, move to your right or left.
* If you fall, stick your hands out yell out "Pick me up".
* Move BACK, give each other space and call it out in unison, start a chant of peer pressure to move back and make the selfish pushers look silly..
*THE CORDONE: while in a mosh pit, or during a crowd surge,  big guys come in handy, form a circle or human barricade around injured people, ONLY IF INJURED.
*THE PULL OUT, If you see someone whom is struggling in the mosh pit or stuck in crowd surge, pull them to safety.
*Do not wear chain wallets, take off your wallet, gauntlets or bullet belts while crowd surfing.
* Do NOT bring a beer bottle, cigarettes, or GLASS in a mosh pit.
* The road is only paved with good intentions, some event goers mean well, figure they got in line  first. Waiting in line at a club, venue, or festival site entrance, being first in line means NOTHING vs. a disorganized entry  (and exit). Better SAFE than sorry, if a crowd of hundreds or thousands in an enclosed area start to form behind you, with NO security and structure,  as doors are LOCKED, or you're wall to wall, or up against a fence or barricade, you're trapped.
If no one, is attempting to organize a line, save your self and walk away. When the doors finally open, people may rush in cutting you, trample you or the mass crowd developing behind you in an enclosed area can suffocate you..Club and door lines, even if organized can become rowdy regarding "day of show" tickets and sell outs, get tickets in ADVANCE.
* Avoid excessive alcohol and at all costs avoid drugs at events as intoxicated people can't often physically handle themselves at events, are more vulnerable, and could cause fights and provoke crowd surges.
*Look below you, someone might be down there, you may have trampled on the fallen.
* Announcements are made, and should be made at sporting and music festivals regarding lost or hurt people.
*Look out for the handicapped and wheelchair crowdsurfers, hold them up, return the wheelchair to front of stage security.
* Stating the Obvious: BRING ID, even if you're not drinking and put it in your pocket, with the name of your next of kin. There fore, you can be identified if something awful were to happen to you, or if you're unconscious and alone.
*Unless you are injured, if a crowd of people 500, 1, 0000 or more, are moving, KEEP moving WITH THE CROWD, KEEP MOVING, OR YOU WILL GET RUN OVER REGARDING THE MOMENTUM OF THE CROWD, DON'T BLOCK THE CROWD (UNLESS INJURY, OR DEATH) WITHOUT COMMUNICATING (MULTIPLE PEOPLE WILL YELL OUT). If you're not moving with the crowd, get out of the way.
* Don't be mean, annoying or aloof at a show, show compassion towards others and as what goes around comes around. Chat with fellow concert goers, brainstorm, as you ALL are a part of a music, sports and consumer community, we are all HUMAN. That person standing next to you in line, in the pit or in the stands could save you life and vice versa.
*DANCING, WALKING OR MOSHING?  When people fall down at an event, it's usually due to minor (non life threatening) and temporary injuries. However, when in a crowded space, club, festival or mosh pit, this is when the injured or far more vulnerable. This may sound cheesy: STRETCH OUT (before you go BALLS OUT)  before moshing or dancing, (as from a few of my experiences) those damn hamstring pulls, and Charley horses will temporarily disable your ability to walk or move. Sprained an ankle, can't walk? Get out the pit ASAP and get crowd surfed to safety.. Also, don't be embarrassed to ask for help regarding even the most minimal and temporary injures, just get out of harms way.. If you see someone limping, help them out of the pit or to safety, and keep hydrated and cool.
* If you're hurt or injured at a show, get medical attention during and after the show. Get specific medical attention from doctors not associated with the venue.  Venue security and EMT may try to persuade you it's your own fault, the venue security and EMT work for the venue and or/promoter as sub contractors. Do not ASSUME, nor say the injury is your fault, specifically in your filing a claim.

SECURITY/PROMOTERS:
* Create barricades and V or T shaped security every 50 yards at open air events with 100 feet feet of space between barricades with multiple security in between the barricades and open space, do NOT over sell or over crowd, venues, clubs, and multiple barricades.
* Stretchers should be available to crowd surf the injured to safety.
* Let fans and event goers in through doors (SRO) 20 at a time, every 3-5 minutes.
* Structure lines to get in the venue fest doors regarding separate lines for ticket holders.
*Don't allow gate crashers.
*Separate  lines for tickets holders and DAY OF SHOW ticket buyers.
*FOR FREE AND NOT FREE EVENTS: Give out wrist bands (for a line)and lotteries for entry for BLACK FRIDAY EVENTS. RSVP for free events, with wrists bands, guest lists with ID, up holding venue and site capacity.
* BLACK FRIDAY:
FROM WIKEPEDIA: Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth Nations. Black Friday is not actually a holiday, but some non-retail employers give their employees the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005 although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.
WRONG! If anything BLACK FRIDAY retailers hire MORE sales associates just for the holiday shopping season and many of those associates are working OVERTIME, better known as "seasonal work" as those associates are laid off the first week of the new year.
HOWEVER:FROM WIKEPEDIA:  With digital and on line technology on the rise, perhaps an INTERNET version of BLACK FRIDAY will alleviate those crowd surges regarding physical shopping vs. Internet shopping. Buying online is easier , quicker and far less dangerous. UNLESS, these retailers and store merchants are promoting BLACK FRIDAY exclusively to only in store and in person.

* Adhere to fire safety and venue/ site capacity  laws.
* Better to over estimate SPACE at open air events,(including site/venue staff and crew) and cap tickets UNDER the capacity for open air events.
*Regarding non ticket sale events, if it looks packed, no re-entry if someone steps out of the venue. Please communicate this rule to concert and event goers, they might be pissed.
*DURING AN EVENT: If you're so concerned about gate crashers and over crowding, NO re-entry for those whom leave a festival or venue. However, let ticket holders and concert goers KNOW in ADVANCE no re-entry (internet, apps, physical signs) to avoid confusion (and a pissed off crowd). if the fans/concert goers step out of the venue or site (for a smoke) for whatever reason, communicate verbally no re-entry. No re-entry policies should also be communicated verbally before fans enter a concert or event, appeal to the fans logic and rationality, don't get physical with the fans, that could cause a massive crowd surge or riot, they deserve better.  ITP is somewhat against venue and site no re-entry policies regarding ticket holders as these policies are strictly driven by promoter greed so you are suckered into buying a venues/ festivals awful food and drink. Also no re-entry policies are driven by disorganized promoters and venues not keeping an accurate tally of nor abiding capacity, and ya know the tragedies that over capacity provoke.
* Structuring multiple day festivals regarding per day tickets sales is a good idea. Fans can buy one day, 2 day or three day tickets, as there is no obligation for that many people to be at a festival for it's entire duration. It doesn't have to be all or nothing and the transition of fans is good. Post schedules,  stages, running order, and cancellations of bands as fans are specific to what artists they want to see vs. over lapping sets, crowds will split between stages and fave bands.  Festivals crowds may thin out early in the morning (or late night) depending on the lineup and set times , as music should stop after a certain time late night, for chill out time, and back to the camp sites, as the fest continues the next day. Second, multiple and third stages in secondary fields help alleviate crowd surges, just go to another stage.
*Music festivals situated like a carnival (BANNAROO, WACKEN OPEN AIR) with many activities to keep fans occupied, there fore less of a need to loiter around the stage area, avoiding crowd surges,  splitting the crowd with various activities and quelling boredom.
* Festival campsites should be clean and safe, a chill out place for fans to sleep instead of in the field around the stage.
*SECURITY AND EMT ACCESS BETWEEN CROWD BARRIERS: Also a specific entry and exit way for emergency personnel (EMT, POLICE, FIRE FIGHTERS) is mandatory and only for emergency use and not a conflict with concert goers entry and exit ways.
*Emergency/EMT on site, mandatory.
*Medical tents and a lost person area/tent, absolutely mandatory, and a place to charge your cell phone. Concert goers looking for lost friends and parents of under 21 should meet for pick up there.
*If you're really that awesome at throwing a FLASH MOB, realize the liability when riot police come and break it up, as that indeed what permits for mass gatherings are for. Keep FLASH MOBS to a minimum of under 20 people in a SPACE that exceeds the expected draw, as it is a FLASH MOB and you never KNOW, spontaneous crowd surges are NOT what people expected.
*Regarding estimates of concert attendance, promoters only state how many tickets they sold, only local law enforcement, town and city council, and the county and city medical examiner's office will tell you how many people showed up (no shows vs. gate crashers).
* Security should stand near venue fire exits and open an UNLOCKED (from the inside) fire exit in case of emergency for evacuation.
BANDS/FESTIVAL PROMOTERS: STOP THE SHOW IF SOMEONE IS INJURED, NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION OR HAS EXPIRED UNTIL SECURITY AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL CAN GET TO THE FANS.  If the music  stops, an announcement is made, the fans became aware of what's going on and are motivated to cooperate, calm and instruct the crowd.  Communicate with stage managers, roadies and help get fans to safety.
*HANDICAPPED AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE: A safe area for the handicapped to enjoy the show. Keep an eye on "Wheelchair crowdsurfers"  as they are awesome, courageous and very vulnerable , point them out to the crowd, as some really are disabled and can't walk or jump in a pit.  If the wheelchair gets separated from the disabled crowd surfer, get the wheelchair from the crowd, make a distinction between the disabled crowd surfer and others, bring the wheelchair crowdsurfers wheelchair to the security side of the barrier in front of the stage. Then catch the disabled crowd surfer at the barricade (MANDATORY-they might not be able to stand on two feet) and sit them on the wheelchair, give the disabled crowd surfer the wheelchair back!!!
*Promote mosh pits in a separate area regarding indoor and outdoor music venues.
* Provide MULTIPLE venue and festival exit and entry ways (lit fire exits indoors) for spectators as if to split the fans entrance and exit ways to avoid long lines and crowd surges.
* Keep water low cost at all events. (I think water should be FREE).
*Stop serving alcohol at a certain hour (this policy may disappoint some people) , serve alcohol in plastic cups and don't serve to minors or those whom are already intoxicated.
*Cordoning off main entrance and exit ways (LOVE FESTIVAL, GERMANY) of a FEST is NOT a good idea, unless all traffic in (SPECIFICALLY IN) and out of the festival grounds is stopped and the promoter communicates with fest goers for alternative routing. COMMUNICATE WITH FANS VIA PA, SMART PHONE APPS/TEXTS, website updates, social media, VOLUNTEERS, and SECURITY. Don't disrupt the flow of thousands of people. Provide alternative COLORED CODED, and MAPPED ENTRANCE AND EXIT WAYS for EMERGENCY ONLY!
* A Crowd surge (or rare occasion-make the distinction between  a mosh pit)  can mean a fight, break it up, in the mosh pit and at any event or expect a riot. Did you see a sexual assault? Look out for sexual assaults in the mosh pit and tightly packed public events, get the victim to safety. SECURITY: Do not pick on or tease concert goers or power trip, don't pick physical fights with a concert goer, it's all of us, against YOU. Security right or wrong  are completely outnumbered vs. fans, and if fans riot, duh.. Let your presence as security be a deterrent and preventive measure.

*Peer Security, know the movers and shakers in the scene, be objective. Train security based upon music culture, genre and scene. Every music genre has its own "culture."
*Ask intoxicated event goers to go a medical tent and chill out,  have them step out of the pit, and calm them down. Try to be non judgmental towards intoxicated event goers and state "for your own safety, for your own best interest", do not thrown them out of the event unless they are a conflict of interest regarding their own and other event and concert goers safety.

Post venue/festival policies on social media/networks, primary websites, text, apps, physical tickets including door policy and when doors open.

* Beware of mother nature and spectators reaction to weather, stop the show in excessive weather and instruct the crowd to evacuate, DON'T panic and NO stampede out. Bad weather at open air fests can adversely affect the stability of the stage.
*Bouncers/security should be situated in between barricades (and in between the barricade and the stage) to gently catch crowd surfers and protect band and crew. Barricades should be 50 feet apart and 50  to 100 feet from the stage. Emergency personnel in between barricades.
*Photographers can photograph (with pass privilege) for ONLY one or two songs per band in a small barricaded area in FRONT of the fan barricade.
*Not ALL GATECRASHERS are of bad character not all ticket holders are of good character. The issue regarding promoters should not be MONEY. When the promoters are held legally liable for  concert casualties, they lose more than they gain, their is NO price tag on a human life. The issue isn't consumerism, money and mass sales, or money lost on gate crashers. The issue is: Over selling a venue or site, or letting hundreds or thousands of gate crashers in could provoke a crowd surge and an epic tragedy.
*Mass gatherings aren't always trouble and small gatherings can be problematic. It's not about the size of the crowd, it's about the size of the crowd proportionate to SPACE and and/or crowd behavior.

* Upgraded technology at music festivals now include SURVEILLANCE DRONES with cameras, so smile, and behave, you're all on camera and video. At the first sign of trouble, even without being reported, security or/and law enforcement WILL be there.
