Two words to describe Baltimore, Maryland's death grind heroes DYING FETUS, BRUTAL and INTENSE. DYING FETUS are legendary for their brutality, social political lyrics, relentless touring and slam death grooves inducing an explosive mosh pit.
Another two words, boring and repetitive with nothing new to add to often stale "slam death".
Many moshes ago, Jason Netherton, Kevin Talley and Sparky Voyles exited the DYING FETUS camp for Baltimore based MISERY INDEX. Enter Vince Matthews (Vocals),Sean Beasley (bass/vocals) and Eric Sayanga as DYING FETUS tore up the world with the bands inspired death grind grooves, breakdowns and vocal mayhem in support of STOP AT NOTHING.
By mid way through this decade, the DYING FETUS lineup dissolved yet again as Eric Sayenga and Vince Matthews left the band and Duane Timlin (ex-Divine Empire/Broken Hope) joined DYING FETUS on drums. DYING FETUS toured relentlessly in support of "War of Attrition", the bands most politically charged release to date. However, the lineup change bug bit DYING FETUS again, reducing the band to a three piece as Mike Kimball (guitar) and Duane Timlin (drums) left DYING FETUS and Trey Wlliams joined the band on drums.
So here we are in 2009, DYING FETUS has been a three piece since 2007, and show no signs of relenting. In fact, DYING FETUS sound tighter, more brutal and even more technical as a three piece.
Surprise? Don't underrate this beast called DYING FETUS, as we at ITP have DYING FETUS's latest release "Descend Into Depravity" out NOW on RELAPSE records.
DYING FETUS's "DESCEND INTO DEPRAVITY" opens with "Your Treachery will Die With You" a brutal track of grind core blasting in with classic slam death grooves and John Gallagher's burping vocals. At 1:40 "Your Treachery will Die With You" Gallagher and the brutal crew pull off some good shredding solos.  At 3:32 "Your Treachery will Die With You" ends on a tech note, keeping it brutal, and a taste of some shred.
"Shepherds Commandment" invoke an old school DYING FETUS sound with a cool grind core feel before flowing nicely into blast beats with burps.. At 1:28 of "Shepherds Commandment" DYING FETUS throw in a twist with a good melodic tech lead riff/solo back and forth from death metal break down, to tech death and blast beats, sweeps. However it's been done before, ditch the breakdowns, DYING FETUS lack the talent to be original.
"Hopeless Insurrection" blasts in perfectly with classic, brutal death grind riffing, and some understated tech stuff throw in there. LMAO, GENERIC death slam death metal with breakdowns.
"Conceived Into Enslavement" enters with dazzling tech noodling into disappointing  DYING FETUS grind grooves. ala  NECROPHAGIST ripp off., LOL. DYING FETUS, incohesive  tech noodling really diversifies DYING FETUS's sound, and of course "Atrocious By Nature" is a generic tech death ripp off, not duplicated live.
The title track of "Descend into Depravity" enters rather  with generic riffing into another boring DYING FETUS slam groove and some good tech/death noodling, sweeps ect. The core riffs are used a little to much into the title track of "Descend into Depravity", wich should get the kids moshing, but..Just when you think DYING FETUS went 'core on us and ran out of ideas, well there is nothing much this band can do without a lineup and talent,  John Gallagher tries gurgling as you can stop listening right here.
"At What Expense" enters with slow grind/doom riffing, before FETUS start tearing up your ear drums..There are some progressive death metal riffs "At What Expense" well mixed into the usual, boring, generic DYING FETUS brutal slam grind core grooves.
DYING FETUS drummer TREY WILLIAMS is as solid as a rock on this release.
DYING FETUS's "Descend Into Depravity" closes with "Ethos Of Coercion", another genric slam riff, and no one cares.
I have to admit, DYING FETUS have progressed on the last two releases and are very tight as a three piece, in the studio. However, DYING FETUS are just another burp/ blast, slam/ death, groove band. DYING FETUS seamlessly combine brutal death grind grooves with grind core breakdowns and a tech/death sensibility, it's just not original enough, and I don't like breakdowns.
....DYING FETUS as a THREE PIECE, as this can be done in studio..However, live as a three piece, nah..
In the studio, DYING FETUS "DESCEND INTO DEPRAVITY" sounds, ok, still, I hate the over use of those boring as fuck breakdowns, as DYING FETUS are weak in the songwriting department.
My complaint with older DYING FETUS was the stale grind CORE aspect of their sound, now upping the ante to a more diverse technical sound, there are more riffs per song, without sacrificing DYING FETUS's trademark brutality. While, DYING FETUS's "War Of Attrition" is generic progression, it's NOT memorable songwriting, generic, death core as this will sound awful live.                                                     "Descend Into Depravity" is also a somewhat of a different and pretentious effort via DYING FETUS.
Nothing really original is featured on DYING FETUS's "DESCEND INTO DEPRAVITY", ditch the break downs, expand into a four or five piece and write memorable riffs as one with have to combine brutality with tech aspects.
However, DYING FETUS need to come off the road and the bands high horse a bit, as DYING FETUS are no better and perhaps not nearly as good as most bands on other extreme metal labels, as DYING FETUS are not innovative and are far too repetitive.

DYING FETUS, with unstable lineup's and too much touring, DF tend not to write anything other than the same release over and over again, boring listeners into not BUYING their releases.
I have a aversion to three piece extreme metal bands, as trios are best reserved for simpler and more minimalist music, without rhythm guitar riffs, the bottom drops out. So what is the point of tech noodling, it's not even in the context of riffs or songwriting?

DYING FETUS can not pull this off live as a three piece, as with rotating lineup's, musical  incohesion and options are limited with,  sure they try, but bore.

Yeh, pfft, DYING FETUS banned and censored by Christians, safe death/grind for X-Christian emo wanna be tough guy kids, (W**ger wanna be gangstas) mall core that doesn't even sell, and does not innovate.
Can't remember one song by DYING FETUS? Of course NOT,  DYING FETUS don't write songs,  can't, nor cohesive riffs, just stale breakdowns.

Oh, wow, here comes another boring breakdown, oh, wait, let's do some mindless noodling to keep the kids involved, oh, another breakdown for the painter cap mall core kids with big holes in their ears...
LMAO.

Plenty of other extreme death metal and death/grind bands pull off the tech aspects far more cohesively, without noodling, an without breakdowns as in bands reviewed on ITP V.09.

First of all, DYING FETUS broke up in 2001 after former bandmates fought GALLAGHER over money, and after many mutations, the band is reduced to a three piece.

Despite double tracking guitars, and over dubbing,  there is no point in recording what the band CAN'T perform organically live (PRO TOOLS, cut and paste), as a three piece, DYING FETUS can NOT pull this off, even with expensive peddles, and that would be cheating.

What is it about JOHN GALLAGHER that would keep a rhythm guitarist or/and co songwriter alienated from the band?

Of course, DYING FETUS represent a sub genre of "metal" that I loathe with a passion and generally HATE: DEATH/CORE, SLAM DEATH or WI**GER/CORE.
Only in America would talent ess hacks try to pretend this crap matters, with awful songwriting,  and no originality.

W***R please, CRYPTOPSY, LYKATHEA AFLAME, NAPALM DEATH and many more bands own yer ass, go lick the floors of yer mall and grow some pubes.
