FROM OPETH:
More horrific news. Keith Emerson (ELP, The Nice) has passed away. The circumstances of his passing seem unclear at the time, but it’s with great sadness that we find ourselves losing another rock legend. Keith was one of the virtuosos of rock, and he handled his keyboards (especially his Hammond organ) much like Jimi Hendrix handled his guitars. Violently! There were even rumors of them forming a band together in the 1970 called HELP. I never met Keith but he was at the table next to me at the classic Prog awards once. It was a great night. At least 3 keyboard phantoms were present in the same room as me. Emerson, Rick Wakeman (Yes, Strawbs, David Bowie etc) and Tony Banks (Genesis). It was a special moment for me seeing Wakeman and Emerson roar with laughter over some old, but not forgotten, naughty memory. I seem to recall something about an episode in the bogs in the 70’s. I didn’t dare to go up to any of them of course. ”Hey dude, you’re a great player duhhhh”. Nah, I wouldn’t do that.
He was a legend. A pioneer of the keyboards. I saw ELP at their reuinon show in London, and even if I thought they were a bit patchy as a team, Emerson was pretty fantastic. He will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family and loved ones from us in Opeth. Past and present. I know that Per Wiberg is a massive fan as well. So, Mr. Emerson. Rest in peace. From your fans. - Mikael
