ITP V.014 ONLY ONE PER COFFIN: R.I.P. DAVE BROCKIE (GWAR)

DAVE BROCKIE (AKA ODERUS URUNGUS), vocalist of Richmond, Virginia intergalactic metal warriors GWAR was found DEAD yesterday at 50, 6:50PM EST.

GWAR guitarist CORY SMOOT (FLATTUS MAXIMUS) passed away on the bands tour bus in 2011.

FROM HUFFINGTON POST:
"The state medical examiner said Smoot, who had performed since 2002 under the name "Flattus Maximus," died of "coronary artery thrombosis brought about by his pre-existing coronary artery disease." But records showed that investigators found on Smoot a $5 bill with a white powder residue, a prescription bottle holding eight Oxycodone-Acetaminophen pills, a lighter and two empty syringes."

GWAR have been an active band since the late 80's, as the band concept was started by Virginia University college art students.

GWAR unleashed "BATTLE MAXIMUS"  9/17/2013 via METAL BLADE RECORDS.

ITP V.014 EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm obviously shocked, saddened and disturbed by the news of DAVE BROCKIE's death. Thank you GWAR for the awesome shows, it was an awesome time. Condolences to friends, family bandmates of DAVE BROCKIE and the GWAR camp.

FROM RANDY BLYTHE and LAMB OF GOD:
I got a very sad call tonight from my buddy Chris Bopst, who was one of the original members of GWAR- my friend Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, the singer of GWAR, has left the building & taken off back to his home planet. He was 50 years old. I do not know details of why he died yet, just that he passed away at home & his roommates found him.
When someone dies, a lot of the time people will say "Oh, he was a unique person, really one of a kind, a true original"- most of these people no idea of what they are talking about- they obviously had never met Dave. Dave TRULY WAS ONE OF A KIND- I can't think of ANYONE even remotely like him. That's VERY HARD TO SAY.

My band learned how to become a real touring band from GWAR- they gave us out first shot at this thing. I learned many things from Dave, many of which I am eternally grateful for, and some of which I am deeply ashamed of. I took this picture at his birthday party a few months ago- Dave kissing his Oderous birthday cake.

Right now, if I were to truly honor Dave in the way HE would do it if it were ME that had died, I would make a completely tasteless joke about his death. But I do not have the stomach for that- Dave would, but not me. He never put much stock in "limits". Richmond, VA has lost one of its most creative people. This is a crying shame to me.

Thank you Brockie, for all the crazy shit you did- thank God you existed, so you could do it and I didn't have to. It was an honor to know you, to be your Shaky Slave, to serve in the Blood Vomits along side you (let's ride!), and to be soaked by your sweet cuttlefish. RIP Dave Brockie. Oderous, enjoy your trip back home. - Randy

FROM NEW ENGLAND METAL AND HARDCORE FESTIVAL PROMOTERS:
New England Metal And Hardcore Fest Founder, Scott Lee, Comments On Dave Brockie's passing: "I'm very sorry to hear the news about my good friend Dave Brockie. Gwar are definitely veterans of the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. They've played many times, and they've played the Palladium at least a dozen or more times. I always looked forward to talking with Dave any time the band came through town. Whether talking about current topics with him or about finding a cure for his heartburn. Dave was definitely a character on and off stage. I remember the time when he took two minutes before they were supposed to go on stage to take pictures with Worcester Police officers. He touched a lot of hearts and souls in New England, on and off stage. Rest in piece, Dave Brockie. (Oderus Urungus) Thank you for all the good times."

FROM MOBILE DEATH CAMP:
RIP DAVE BROCKIE!!

FROM BROKEN HOPE:
*UPDATED--From out earlier post below--it's unfortunately true. RIP, DAVE "Oderus Urungus" BROCKIE.
BROKEN HOPE just got wind from sources that Oderus Urungus--played by Dave Brockie--may have died.

FROM DECIBEL MAGAZINE:
In case anyone missed the horrible news, Gwar's Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) passed away last night. The universe is a safer (and suckier) place today:

FROM STARLAND BALLROOM:
As news trickled in this last night about the passing of a good friend, we hoped it would not be true. Sources have confirmed this morning that Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus), lead singer of GWAR, has passed away.
GWAR was a staple here at Starland Ballroom. Year after year they entertained thousands on our stage. When we were forced to close for renovations, GWAR made a promise to be one of the first bands back, and they were back just 10 days after our opening.
Dave will not only be remembered as frontman of a great band, but a true friend to many of us in the music community and here in New Jersey.

FROM TREMONT MUSIC HALL:
Rest in peace Dave Brockie.
Dave Brockie and GWAR were very good to us at Tremont.
They did not have to play a Halloween show here in Charlotte and they sure as hell could have filled up a larger venue, but we were told that they wanted to come back to Tremont.

I can't express how thankful we at Tremont are to have known a really great person and it is impossible to express our grief over this loss.

That said, try to remember Dave shambling around in his underwear messing with fans after the Halloween show.

I bet he would have wanted it that way.

I say this for all of us at Tremont...

God bless and God speed.

You will be remembered for ever.
Tremont John

FROM FULFILLMENT MERCH:
 R.I.P Dave Brockie, of GWAR.

FROM WAX TRAX RECORDS:
Sorry to hear about this: GWAR were a lot of fun and put on a spectacular show.

FROM METAL CHEFS:
Good my metal chefs! He has left us the great Dave Brockie, frontman vocalist of GWAR at 50 years :( With his death this belt is no founding members and the uncertainty that will happen with it. Brockie was found in his apartment without life, the causes are not yet required. FLIES HIGH ODERUS URUNGUS! lml Hell completo Cooker

FROM SIRIUS XM RADIO LIQUID METAL.

R.I.P. to Dave Brockie, a major inspiration to everyone pushing against the grain. Gwar created their own category of entertainment from scratch. They shocked and amused millions against all odds, and never backed down from ANYONE, anywhere. He's ripping the home planet a new one tonight. // IAN

FROM ROAD CREW BOOKS:

Rest in peace, Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie, the lead singer of Gwar from my hometown of Richmond, VA. What lousy news to wake up to.
Every time I've ever seen Gwar through the years, I've always laughed my ass off. What a show to watch; what an entertainer Dave was.
The last time I actually had a real conversation with Dave was in Australia when I was working with Megadeth on the No Sleep Til festival in December 2010. Gwar was also on the tour.
At the airport, where we all waited for our plane to go home for Christmas, we talked for bit and I realized how smart this man really was. Then he said, "Merry Christmas, Mark," and I don't think I ever spoke to him again. He was just a normal guy from Richmond with a brilliant imagination and big heart. He will be missed.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

FROM DEATH:
RIP Dave Brockie "Oderus Urungus". I saw you guys live in Orlando and you ruined one of my favorite shirts but I still had a fucking blast.

Chris steele

FROM CATTLE DECAPITATION:
RIP Dave Brockie. Thank you for all the good times that we had on stage, off stage, backstage... We're gonna miss you.

FROM BATTLECROSS:
The world lost a great man yesterday. A fearless, artistic, talented, and humorous man at the top of his craft. His performances with GWAR looked effortless, a sign that he truly enjoyed what he did. His antics on stage were witnessed by millions and inspired not only ourselves, but people all around the globe. He helped teach us that to own the stage is to own the crowd with fearlessness and having pure fun. Our brief, but fantastic time sharing the stage with him for three days at the end of last year was simply one of the greatest moments of our careers, if not our lives.

Dave Brockie, best known as Oderus Urungus, frontman of GWAR - you will be forever missed and never forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and to the band. Nothing we say can help what has been lost, but we'll always have the fondest of memories.

Rest in peace, Dave. Three words of yours will resound to get us pumped up before each set:

"LET - US - SLAY!"

FROM  INFERNAEON:
It is with great sadness that Infernaeon has learned of the passing of our close friend and brother Dave Brockie of GWAR. Our hearts go out to his band, his friends, his family, and the multitudes of fans he had. He will be severely missed. \m/ R.I.P. Oderus \m/

FROM DOYLE (MISFITS):
Dave Brockie…one of the most genuine people in this business who I have ever met...I've toured with him many, many times with the Misfits…we were going to do our first Doyle tour with him and our GWAR family. Dave was actually one of the funniest, nicest, most insane and talented human beings I have ever met. It was always a pleasure to be around him and all those guys. When we toured with them it was like an army of insane monsters. They are all my family and my heart is broken today. Hail Oderus Urungus!!! A dear friend…

FROM HOUSECORE HORROR FEST:
Dave Brockie walked into GWAR's dressing room at Housecore Horror Film Festival last year, looked around, took a deep breath and let out a road weary, "Thank GOD somebody has their shit together." It was an endorsement on the set up we had waiting for the band who were headliners with DOWN and GOBLIN at the inaugural fest. We were thrilled out of our minds that he and the rest of the band were pleased with us and their presence was a HUGE factor in the success of our event. We'll be eternally grateful that Dave and GWAR helped us make rock n roll history year one and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire GWAR FAMILY. R.I.P. Oderus. We are devastated. ~Tammy

FROM PHILIP H. ANSELMO and THE ILLEGALS:
RIP Dave Brockie … There was only one like you.

FROM FILTER:
Our thoughts go out to the band members and family of GWAR's lead singer and founder, Dave Brockie found dead yesterday at his home in Richmond, Virginia.

FROM 3 INCHES OF BLOOD:
We really don't want to believe that Dave Brockie aka Oderus Urungus is dead because there always seems to be celebrity death hoaxes happening all the time, but if it is true then the metal community has lost a true visionary.
We had the pleasure of playing with Gwar on a few occasions including a US tour in 2007, which Gwar hand picked us for, and the "No Sleep til" festival tour of Australia in 2010.
We all knew his on stage persona to be lewd, crude, and supremely entertaining but only certain people got to know the off stage Dave, which was always friendly and charismatic. He was a larger than life personality that will leave an indelible mark on fans and musical peers alike. RIP Dave Brockie

FROM GOATWHORE and SOILENT GREEN:
Right now my heart is wedged in my throat and I have this overwhelmed feeling of loss. My words can't, and never will describe this. We have lost someone that has been a mentor, a great friend, an inspiration and an overall down to earth incredible person. Our good friend Dave Brockie has left us behind and it pains us as we offer our condolences to his family, friends, bandmates and the masses of people that have adored him. It is an honor to have been a part of his life in music.

Hail the Legions Of GWAR! Long Live Oderus!! Dave will forever be with everyone that has crossed his path - Ben Falgoust

FROM THE METAL FEST (SANTIAGO, CHILE):
From here, we regret the death of quite a character of metal and rock, Oderus Urungus of Gwar, who in this last day it was learned his death. We join the regret that you manifested internationally by the loss of a great talent, who knew how to inject a bizarre sense of humor to this scene that he sometimes gets so serious. In addition to good music, by the way. Goodbye don Dave Brockie (1963-2014), it will remind you

FROM MYTHRIAS
It's truly a sad day in the Metal World, as we lost a truly legendary front man in Dave Brockie. Not only was he extremely funny, Brockie was an extremely caring, and intelligent guy, that was a hero to many. Oderus Urungus, on the other hand, we all know didn't die, but was needed for a great battle back on his home planet! R.I.P. Dave, this one is for you!

FROM MUNICIPAL WASTE:
Our hearts go out to our brothers in Gwar and their familys. We've lost count of how many amazing times we've shared with Dave and are deeply saddened by this loss. Thanks for everything you've done for us over the years Dave. We wouldnt be where we are today without you.

FROM ROADRUNNER RECORDS:
RIP Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Oderus Urungus of Gwar. I last saw the band at Riot Fest 2013 in Chicago, and after the show I had the chance to speak with Dave for a few minutes. He was every bit as down to Earth and crass as everyone is reporting him to have been. I was lucky to have met him. This photo was taken from Randy Blythe's Instagram; he actually knew the man, so if you have a moment go read what he had to say:http://instagram.com/drandallblythe

FROM RAMMING SPEED:
Having just moved down to Richmond, it's incredible to see how many people count Dave Brockie as a true friend and inspiration. For the world he was a blood shooting heavy metal space alien, for the local music scene in RVA he was a true snowflake, an old school punk rabble-rouser and a friend of all. We've never had a chance to play with GWAR, but like anyone else raised on Bevis and Butthead you know we're all fans. Hail and kill Dave.

FROM BILL ZEBUB:
Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) was a true artist. It is ironic that before we met, he actually wanted to reprimand me. But he suddenly understood what I was doing in my magazine (The Grimoire of Exalted Deeds), and we became friends.
I didn't want to take advantage of my relationship so I didn't ask Dave to be in one of my movies until a couple of years ago. That day was great on many levels. First, I almost totaled my car while driving backwards, but I cannot say more about that because of alcohol. But I am glad that he was there with me. We were sort of beer brothers that way.
The other thing that I saw was his kindness. We had to get some props and were lucky to be in a city that had a year-round Halloween store; One of the clerks said that she couldn't get tickets in time for the GWAR show, and he put her and her friends on the V.I.P. list.
I appreciated his help, and how he defended me, but even if he had hated me I would have still been glad that he could reach such a broad audience with his wit and criticism. I can think of no artist who is quite like him. In a way, I think this end is fitting. He died before slowing down. I remember our conversation about that - about how some people slow down, and we laughed about how we are not young but our brains don't seem to know that. Are we immature, or have we broken a barrier?
