THERMOHALINE are an avant garde black metal duo (LENNART JANSSEN and NUNO LORENCO) from Brazil and Belgium.
"MAELSTROM" is THERMOHALINE'S full length debut.
THERMOHALINE'S "MAELSTROM" kicks off with "OBRA DINN", a rager of a black metal track with light, atmospheric keyboards and some sick riffing. At 4:30, "OBRA DINN" takes a lighter turn, with picked notes and female operatic vocals before churning out some vicious melodic black metal.
THERMOHALINE'S "ADAMASTOR", enlightens with a little electronica before morphing into some epic black metal madness. At 3:10, "ADAMASTOR" segues into non English spoken word before ripping into some vicious black metal...Is that an accordion I hear, out of no where? "ADAMASTOR" continues with a definitive riff, great drum programming, black/ clean vocal interplay and vicious blackened , ELECTRONIC (you heard that right) metal.
Three minutes into THERMOHALINE'S "SIRENS", the duo experiments with atmospheric doom, a play on dynamics in stark contrast to the track's vicious blackened, death metal opening. At 5:44, "SIRENS" floats into the sound of ethereal keyboards before seguing into some vicious spellbinding black metal.
THERMOHALINE'S vocalist screams in "I'll throw myself into the ocean and drown" as "SHIPWRECKED" invokes some brutal blackened, death metal with Gothic organ like keyboards. At 4:40 you can almost hear the waves tipping the boat with some thrash riffs keeping the track afloat. At 8:57, "SHIPWRECKED"segues into some atmospheric jazz before morphing into some vicious blackened thrash with clean vocals.
THERMOHALINE'S "DARK CORNERS OF THE OCEAN" features some nasty blackened death metal riffing with death and black metal vocals. At 4:04, "DARK CORNERS OF THE OCEAN" features a INDUSTRIAL, DRUM AND BASS segue, one of those wait for it moments as the song takes off into some technical blackened thrash. .
THERMOHALINE'S "MAELSTROM"closes with "PAARDENMARKT" features elements of post black metal (melodic rhythm guitar). After a mid song sound effect break, "PAARDENMARKT" explores some vicious blackened death metal, seguing back to the melodic post black metal.
WOW!
THERMOHALINE explore all things nautical on "MAELSTROM". You can feel the ship rolling through inclement weather with the wide variety of vicious blackened death metal riffs and electronica experimentation that will have you saying "Wait for it".
THERMOHALIN's songwriting is expansive and dense as the tracks featured on "MAELSTROM" are between 8 and over 10 minutes long. However, with the wide variety of vicious riffing and avant garde experimentation, the songs don't FEEL long, THERMOHALINE leave you craving for more.
THERMOHALINE feature an awesome performance of a well programmed drum machine and plenty of black metal shrieks and death metal growls.
Riding the wave of many musical genres (and non metal ones too), THERMOHALINE consolidate differing ideas into a cauldron of extreme metal. One for the ages, ushering in a new wave of avant garde extreme metal.
Like big waves in the Sea, THERMOHALINE surf a musical "maelstrom" of greatness.
Enjoy swimming in this.
