Formed in Cambridge by media-shy frontman K.R. Stars, in an era of profile building, brand-expanding and over-exposure Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats are a cult genuine phenomena. The dictionary definition of cult, in fact: “a system of religious worship, with reference to its rites and ceremonies. A group or sect bound together by veneration of the same ideal.” In this case: taking rock music back to its ritualistic beginnings when pagan heathens would stomp out a dirt-rhythm and howl at the moon. When music was the carnal catalyst for orgiastic midnight reckonings.

Uncle Acid’s prime currency is mystery and intrigue. And riffs. Tonnes of riffs. You won’t see them on TV. You’ll barely see their photographs. They perform only on occasions deemed necessary; each show a sensory assault and a sacrifice of social niceties. As such they are the very antithesis of what it is to be a rock band in the 21st century and therefore quite brilliant.
Their self-released debut album Volume 1 (2010) laid down the blueprint and grabbed the attention of Rise Above Records. Its follow-up Blood Lust (2011) was a heavy, heavy album dripping in disdain and sanguine plasma. There were shades of the doom and metal greats in there - Sabbath, Pentagram, Maiden - but with a big dose of The Beatles lacing the punch, had the Beatles ditched love and peace to ride the helter skelter down into the dark 70s to discover hate and war, devil worship and knife-play. It is already a classic of its era. Any era. One magazine promptly dubbed them “the Bong Lennon, the Crack Sabbath, the Hex Pistols the world has been waiting for”. A fair assessment.

Heady edits of accompanying video clips to accompany songs such as ‘I’ll Cut You Down’ and ‘Ritual Knife’ meanwhile revealed the band’s love for British horror movies like Witchfinder General and Tower Of Evil. Their website is less a media hub and more a paranoia-inducing “garbage dump” for the best of trash culture: photos of goat skulls, nuns, acid tabs and ritual sex sit alongside grainy TV clips of Jim Jones and Charles Manson, exploitation movies and rolling news.

** New single Mind Crawler, with accompanying video to be released late August.

Arriving at an abandoned barn beneath a dead summer sky, Uncle Acid sets up his crackling vintage tweed amp. Nestled between bales of hay he sings tales of murder, lust and horror. He is soon joined by two female deadbeats he met hitchhiking. Playing on battered old pawn shop instruments, the trio r...
